Fantastic news for those who put their name down hoping to get a spot on the NXE previews: Microsoft haven't forgotten about you, and they've released the update to absolutely everyone who submitted an application (as long as the details and console ID were correct). The news comes from Major Nelson merely 24 hours before Xbox owners worldwide will be able to experience it, a welcomed gesture showing that Microsoft appreciates it's loyal users, and one which will most likely take a lot of stress off the servers.

The New Xbox Experience is free for all Xbox 360 owners with an Xbox Live account set up (free Silver accounts work too) and requires 128MB of storage to download, and Microsoft has previously given away free memory cards to Core owners so that they aren't left out. The update will provide Netflix support, installing games to the HDD, avatars, and a much more refined interface, among other features. Once installed, the Xbox will play an introductory video before letting you explore.

Just thought I'd mention it's Nov 20th for Australia, Aussies (that are not in the preview program) gotta wait an extra day, not sure why. It's probably a good thing in disguise though, as the MS servers will be getting hammered on the 19th.

You sure it won't still be Nov 19th in Redmond (the center of the universe according to Microsoft) when it's launched in Australia? I figure it'll be Wednesday noon for the US west coast, 3pm on the east coast, 9pm in Central Europe and 7am (Nov 20th) in Sydney, Australia. So you'll "hammer" the servers the same time as everyone else. But since it's distributed through a worldwide network of distributed servers, you have your own local servers anyway, so it doesn't matter when the rest of the world gets it as far as the server load is concerned.

Very true, it might be cause of that. However, I only mentioned it because originally MS were promoting it as been Nov 19th here and then it was pushed to 20th....so yeah come to think of it, they probably just tweaked it so everyone gets it at the same time. To the server thing, I don't think Microsoft Australia has any local servers though, as when you deal with MS here it's actually through MS Singapore, still they are sort of close by

the NXE is getting online right now as I write.
Well ... maybe not ... I got my paw on the NXE via unoficial means and 15 mintes ago I was able to sign in to XBL and after a reboot I can't sign in

Sounds like your box got banned
#5.2 kazuyette on 18 Nov 2008 - 15:24
I don't have a modded box so I can't see why I'd be banned mate
#5.3 zoonyx on 18 Nov 2008 - 15:38
you can't see why you'd be banned? Despite admitting you got NXE unofficially?

While I accept it is doubtful, there is a big reason right there why you MIGHT be banned.
#5.4 kazuyette on 18 Nov 2008 - 15:47
I don't why I should be banned from Live or else a lot of people in my case would be damn ****ed. Everything will be sorted in a day or two so I'm really confident. I think that this was due to the upgrade that is ( or has happened ) happening to xbox.com for the official release of the NXE.
#5.5 PureLegend on 18 Nov 2008 - 17:33
kazuyette, you are right. You're only excluded from Xbox Live until tomorrow
#5.6 kazuyette on 18 Nov 2008 - 19:27
^^
I'm always right.
#5.7 zoonyx on 18 Nov 2008 - 23:49
I never said you would be banned, I just took issue with you saying you couldn't see any reason why you might be.

It's a dashboard update people. It's not that big of a deal. I still don't understand why people are getting so excited about this, and why they're practically begging to get it early.

A faster, completely new interface, Netflix, being able to run games from the hard drive, and many other new features is no big deal?
#6.2 IceBreakerG on 18 Nov 2008 - 14:29
That's like saying Windows 7 is just another Windows update, it's not that big of a deal, when in reality, it is kind of a big deal.
#6.3 Vezineth on 18 Nov 2008 - 17:54
I read somewhere that NXE is a major OS update that completely changes the way 306 behaves. Third part can integrate their application into 360 like Netflix. If thats not a big deal than I dont know what is.
#6.4 +Xerxes on 18 Nov 2008 - 20:49
I can see why it's not much of a big deal. Think about it, Netflix only applies if you live in NA, rest of the world is out of luck. HDD installing, well for core owners or people with a 20Gb HDD and either strapped for cash or don't want to pay the high price for a 60Gb/120Gb HDD are out of luck. The rest is purely subjective on personal taste.

#8 Marshalus on 18 Nov 2008 - 16:29
I can't wait for tomorrow. I'm really excited about the Netflix integration, and to see how the rest of it works.

wohooo... tomorrow finally!

So it sounds like this update is stored on the hard drive or memory card, right? So what happens if you unplug them and turn it on, will it boot to the old dash? I'm afraid I'm going to hate the new interface, would be nice to be able to go back to the old one. It seems strange that they won't let people choose.
#10.1 jasondefaoite on 19 Nov 2008 - 05:55
I think only the avatar information is stored on the hdd/memory card, along with the account information. Removing both the memory card and hdd from my xbox, and booting the machine, you still get the new dash.
(1 reply) #11 lylesback2 on 19 Nov 2008 - 06:16
anyone know what time the updates will roll out?
#11.1 jasondefaoite on 19 Nov 2008 - 06:40
I saw it was 2am PST. From Major Nelson's blog ... so just over 2 hours from now.
#12 Darken on 19 Nov 2008 - 06:20
Wow!
#13 xDayan on 19 Nov 2008 - 21:05
Installed it, I had to leave during mid-install, but it's out xD
#14 cloudstrife13 on 19 Nov 2008 - 21:32
I'm loving this update, installing games works great. So much for 360 only owners making fun of PS3 game installs. Now you get to see what it's all about!
