Blizzard Entertainment announced that their second expansion pack to the World of Warcraft game, Wrath of the Lich King, has sold over 2.8 million copies within 24 hours of release, beating the previous record of 2.4, also set by Blizzard Entertainment, with the Burning Crusade expansion pack released in January 2007.

There were numerous events taking place, some of which had thousands of people queueing for the game . On top of beating their own record, the expansion pack has also become GameStop's best-selling game this year. CEO and co founder of Blizzard Entertainment, Mike Morhaime said "We look forward to seeing even more players log in to experience it in the days ahead". With 11 million subscribers prior to release, the game is sure to grow with this latest addition.

The night of release brought in most of the sales, but it is likely sales will continue steadily over the coming months and Christmas period, further increasing the amount of subscribers the game has. Retailing at around $30 to $40, and an additional monthly fee of about $10, this latest release will undoubtedly bring in a large income for Blizzard Entertainment (and Activision too).

Gamers have, overall, been very pleased with the game so far, with many hardcore players making quick progress to reach the level cap of 80 already. What about you - have you managed to play the game yet? If so, what did you think of it?

Article's wrong, last I checked WoW was $15, not $10 a month. Granted, some places use different rates and even different payment models (some parts of Asia pay a few cents per hour of play, for example) but I think most of your readers here on Neowin will be paying the $15 per month.

$15 indeed.

And people want to complain about the $50 per "year" for Xbox Live yet some of the same ones would pay the $15 per "month" to play 1 game. Let's do some math here:

(Longest Month, 31 days): $15 / 31 = ~$0.48 per day
(365 Days): $50 / 365 = ~ $0.14 per day

Hmmm, which one seems like a better deal now? I'll admit, I've never played WoW. I have no intentions on playing it, and I don't want to play it. There's no way I could justify paying a $15/month monthly subscription for 1 game version a $50 annual fee for the best online console gaming service around.

Also, the thing I noticed in the article, I know the subscription fee for WoW is $15 a month, but the article says an "additional monthly fee of about $10" which means, that it "could" be $25 a month? Unless that is an error.

I subscribe to World of Warcraft and I think XBox Live Gold Membership is kind of a rip off. Why? Because they do not have centralized servers. Why the hell do I need to pay Microsoft so that I can connect to my friends xbox to play a game. There is not excess burden on Microsoft's servers because of the games taking place on XBox Live. They should have centralized servers for at least their more popular titles. If anything to derail the cheaters which are still a major problem with Halo 3 and Gears of War 2.

That has got to be the most assinine comment I've seen today.
So, you pay 14 cents a day for your subscription and what? And you do nothing. You stare at your Xbox Live interface not doing anything because 50 bucks a year doesn't buy you any games.
Apples != Oranges.

Yeah. But guess what. WoW isn't free either. You still gotta buy the game on top of the monthly subscription. So no, it's not really apples to oranges. With XBL you're paying for community access. With the WoW subscription you're still paying for the community access plus the "privilege" to play the game you already paid for. And for the record, $180 a year doesn't buy you any games either with WoW, just lets you play on their servers.

That breakdown was just on the cost per day. I'm not really sure why there's no centralized servers for games in XBL, but it may have to do with the fact that devs/publishers have their own servers for certain games (like EA). Just accept that this will not change anytime soon (if ever).

The way I look at it is like this: if I can afford to go squander $15 on fast food, surely $15/mo isn't really anything. Less fast food, more game time.

Though, I suppose if you can't afford $15/mo, you can... go play Guild Wars?

If only i could have a per-hour model as well, I'd actually try playing it. Monthly subscriptions don't work for casual play.
#3.1 Kosh on 21 Nov 2008 - 10:12
Well there is a 10-day guest pass included in every game. So you can try WoW free for 10-days.

And then you can't play without having to pay the "extreme" fees if you're a casual player, like me.
#3.3 +Smigit on 21 Nov 2008 - 14:20
$15 or so isn't too bad really even for casual use. I know people who play it once a week and are happy to pay that much. Really, when you consider how much two, maybe three 90min movies will cost you to see then it's fairly fair in comparison to other mediums.

Chances are an hourly subscription would end up more expensive for many people anyway and even if your not in game they still have server housework to do.

Actually, the 10 day pass is for you to give someone else ... with the game itself you get a month free.

The amount of money Blizzard make each month in subscriptions this expansion should have been free!

So should the game :/

The expenses are higher than you think. Making the game itself free is an interesting idea, but it would need to be a download-only version.

Plus there's the month free in the box, so it could cause maaaassive extra load if everyone could play it for no cost.
#4.3 +Dakkaroth on 21 Nov 2008 - 20:32
Considering they continue to dish out new content for free, I don't think they've done anything wrong here by charging us for an expansion they worked so hard to create. Everything from the levels, music, creation of new gameplay mechanics and so forth...

So from the 11 Million Subscribers , only 2.8 actually bought the Expansion ? and its a record ? , If i was Blizzard i would be asking myself where are the 8.2 Million subscribers

Unless they suck in maths and will say that now they have 13.8Million subscribers
#5.1 KavazovAngel on 21 Nov 2008 - 13:59
Maybe you should read a little more. 2,8 million sales only on the release day. (read, ONE DAY).

Yes and where are the rest of the 8million , by now they would have them all
What i mean its those numbers were pulled from the backside of some PR , well its like the global economy , where they showed us in the past that they were rich they had lots of money and in the end ( present ) they actually were lying and didnt had anything just a frontend nothing else

Ps. And i'm not even going to ask why the spanish members are considered Mexicans ( www.warcraft.com - Mexican flag - Spanish members click here )
#5.3 Anaron on 21 Nov 2008 - 15:38
2.8 million sales on the first day. That includes current subscribers, new subscribers, and people who just buy the game for the heck of it. It doesn't mean 2.8 million out of the current 11 million subscribers. And not everyone is going to buy it.

1: Not everyone that plays WoW absolutely had to have the expansion the day it was released.
2: They probably used the Mexican flag because the realm is Latin America, not just "Spanish." If you are actually from Spain you would probably be playing on the EU servers, not a North American one.
#5.5 tonyunreal on 21 Nov 2008 - 16:10
Because that's the record of WoW sales in NA and EU region? AFAIK the expansion was released in some regions(e.g. Taiwan) at a later date, and they hadn't even announce the release date in China, which is the biggest of their player bases.
#5.6 +Dakkaroth on 21 Nov 2008 - 20:35
Let us not forget the parents who will be the ones purchasing the game for their children, only forcing them to WAIT UNTIL CHRISTMAS!!

DAMNIT MOM WTF?!!!

"Oh my gooses, but PC gaming is dead!"

If I had to guess, I think he's making fun of people who compare XBox (or other console gaming) to PC Gaming.

Personally I love the new class added with this expansion, and I've had no regrets about the purchase price or the $15 /mo.
#7 acidic-e- on 23 Nov 2008 - 14:28
yeah $15. good exp though some of the places are just insane to look at. hit 80 the other day and been kinda flying around taking pics of some cool stuff I've seen. Few bugs with a few quests but other then that I'm really liking this exp. BC honestly was not that fun at all.
