The PC version of Grand Theft Auto IV is now available to pre-order on Steam, for $39.99, and will be available for download on December 3, 2008. Those who pre-order will also receive a free copy of Grand Theft Auto: Vice City for PC, available straight after purchase. Grand Theft Auto IV was made available for the PS3 and Xbox 360 earlier this year, and received some of the best reviews seen for a recent game, scoring 10/10 from several popular review sites.The recommended system requirements are higher than one might expect: an Intel Core 2 2.4 GHz Quad (or AMD Phenom X3 2.1 GHz) and 16GB of hard disk space will raise some eyebrows, but let's not forget that the largely improved graphics (mainly due to the Euphoria engine) will at least partially make up for this. It should also be noted that those are only recommended; there will be the usual settings allowing the player to turn off extra features.
The game will have support for both PC controls and the Xbox 360 controller, with the PC controls likely to be the same as they were for GTA: San Andreas. As far as downloadable content for the PC goes, there is no mention of it yet, with the only known content pack - "The Lost and Damned" - announced only for the Xbox 360, due for release in early 2009.
The game should be released in retail stores on the same day, although it won't be available in European retail stores until the next day.

bottom line games like GTA4 are best getting the boxed version.
p.s. games like MAFIA 2 are going to be MUCH better than GTA is... it's just a shame MAFIA did not get recognition that GTA series does.... cause to me one of Mafia's strongest points (besides gameplay obviously) is it delivers that 'movie like experience' which you dont get from GTA series.
and also, i found myself going back to replay Mafia (on PC) many times to where once i beat the GTA games i never really cared to much to replay them.... even to this day i consider MAFIA (on PC) to be one of the all time best single player games... and it's even fun to this day even though you can tell it's a little dated in the graphics dept but considering the game was made in 2002 it's quite respectable.

You cannot play a Steam game without connecting to the internet to authorize it at least once. And restoring the backup will require a connection to reauthorize when it's restored.

May be at home, but not quite true at work, school or any shared connection , where the only way to connect the net is passing a restrictive proxy/firewall.
+1 for boxed version. SanAndreas looked ugly anyway and Im not prepared to download 8-16GB of game data on my current plan!

I found it strange that the AMD counterpart required only a tricore processor and that's running @ 2.1 Ghz.
However, I would much prefer to play any and al GTA games on Console

But I guess in this case it is better to get the retail version. As in every other case, except for Valve games with require Steam anyway.
That statement does not make sense. Recommended means that is the maker suggest to use. Requirements would be the minimum hardware requirement.
I prefer to buy my games on Steam whenever I can, I always have an internet connection. If I had a house fire, burglary, all my belongings lost 1 way or another, at least when i replace my pc, I can log back into steam and all my games are there. i have no bulky packaging to store, no library of games cluttering up a shelf, and no media whcih i could damage. I am often disapointed when games I want come out and steam dont sell them IE The need for speed games.
