It's that time of year where leading game sites start publishing their "best of the year" game lists, and IGN has posted their 'Best of 2008' PC Games.  It was quite a list, and it was definitely a fantastic year for PC gaming as a whole.

"Contrary to popular perception, the PC isn't dying. The PC remains in far more homes than all the consoles combined. Yes, that covers a very broad range of machines, but there are also an incredibly broad range of PC games that cater to gamers of all stripes, from the casual gamer who only plays puzzle games to the hardcore gamer who buys a dozen or more games per year."

IGN had a wide variety of categories this year, including awards for Best Action Game, Best New IP, Most Innovative Design, and much more.

Highlights include:

  • Left 4 Dead – Best Multiplayer Game
  • GTA IV – Best Action Game
  • Sins of a Solar Empire – Best New IP
  • Spore – Best Artistic Design
  • GC II: Twilight of the Arnor – Best Expansion
  • Crysis Warhead – Best Graphics Technology
  • Sins of a Solar Empire – Best Strategy Game

Sins of a Solar Empire from IronClad Games and published by Stardock, walked away with the most awards including the top spot with PC Game of the Year.

IGN picks bug fest GTA4 for action game... nice.

I don't trust anything coming from CNET networks, gamespy+IGN+gamespot .

In defense of that. The PS3 version of GTA IV is fairly bug free.

Yeah but this is the PC version winning the award. Your point, although valid, doesn't apply here.
#1.3 DaDog V12 on 18 Dec 2008 - 07:16
That pretty much applies to the PC version only. My cousin lets me play on his 360 and its great!!!

So is the Xbox 360 version, but this list of rewards is PC games, and the PC version of GTA4 doesn't belong within 500 ft of this list.

Because no one uses a computer for work. Oh no. Not in this world.

lolz @ whoever said that
#2.2 +dead.cell on 17 Dec 2008 - 21:36
I think he meant PC gaming isn't dying. If you've kept up with the news, you'd see how some people try to spread that idea around. For what reason I have no idea.

Left 4 Dead beat Lich King for best multiplayer?
#3.1 Recon415 on 17 Dec 2008 - 18:29
Lich King isn't a game, it's an expansion for a 5 year old game that is getting past its prime. L4D, in my opinion, well deserves that title. It's great fun if you would try it.

Way past it's prime. Way, waaay past.
#3.3 GreyWolfSC on 17 Dec 2008 - 19:21
Well, they also have Age of Conan as a nominee for one of the categories. It's on GameSpot's 2008 list - as one of the biggest disappointments.
#3.4 zalman on 17 Dec 2008 - 19:36
yea having age of conan shows how crappy ign has gotten

Yup, please continue shouting that at the 10 million players enjoying the game. That'll only make you more right.
#3.6 +dead.cell on 17 Dec 2008 - 21:39
Exactly as Kirkburn said. I don't argue the best multiplayer at all, but I was surprised to see Wrath got beat out by GC II. I've never really got into that game though, so I'll trust IGN made a good pick from the two.

No Dead Space?

Yea dead space should have got an award, the atmosphere , graphics and the holograms were awesome, and the story too. Dead Space Downfall (anime) wasn't very good.
#4.2 zalman on 17 Dec 2008 - 19:36
pls dont call downfall anime, its an insult to anime

i dont trust any gamesite for rating games. they dont know anything or even play the games before rate anything.
#5.2 Vezineth on 17 Dec 2008 - 19:31
I played GTA 4 on both 360 and PS3 and honestly I was shocked at how could any website give it a 10 , in my opinion it doesn't go past 8 , honestly what is so good about it ? Perhaps the sites were taking bribes ?
#5.3 toadeater on 17 Dec 2008 - 22:55
They just copied the console review, ASSuming the PC version will get the same response.
#6 IceBreakerG on 17 Dec 2008 - 19:22
For those that didn't know, they also have the DS, PSP, Wireless and Music awards out too. I looked at the PSP awards, and I don't have too many complaints there. The music awards are pure garbage. I didn't bother looking at the others (don't have a DS, so I don't care lol).

Fallout 3 = waaay overrated. Should not have even been nominated in some of those categories. Maybe it's also a sign that no one could come up with anything better. Sad.

Nice to see Dead Space getting some respect for keeping the AVP2/Doom 3 traditions alive.

They should have called it Morrowind 3. Oblivion was Morrowind 2. They remake the same game over and over.

Besides EA's annual sports rehashes, The Call of Duty franchise is just as guilty--but at least they still call it Call of Duty and don't try to pass it off as a new game!

You're exaggerating, overall Fallout 3 is waaay more original than CoD series, or GTAIV, Dead Space, Tomb Raider, Warhammer,
#7.3 yert* on 23 Dec 2008 - 02:32
It may be more original but it's still the same gameplay rehashed. It gets very boring very fast. The only reason to play Fallout 3 is if you liked the Morrowind games and like exploring the same looking caves over and over (or metro tunnels, same thing) and speaking to different characters that have the same voice actor.

Spore should not have gotten best in anything.

I wonder how much money changed hands for those "awards".

I think it got awards for having so much unrealized potential, LOL.

They could have gone so very far with that whole concept, but its developers stopped short.

Congrats Stardock & Bradley (Frogboy)
This will make your company even stronger and helps to promote Impulse

Sins of a Solar Empire – Best New IP
GC II: Twilight of the Arnor – Best Expansion
Sins of a Solar Empire – Best Strategy Game
(3 replies) #10 Frogboy on 17 Dec 2008 - 22:06
Yea, I was pretty happy with the results. And shocked!

Stardock came away with:
1. PC Game of the Year.
2. Best Strategy Game.
3. Best new IP
4. Most innovative game design
5. Expansion pack of the year.

So Stardock captured over half the awards this year. w00t.

That's wicked
#10.2 LTD on 17 Dec 2008 - 22:41
Well that's right - good old Stardock. The company's come a looong way. Congrats!
#10.3 +TCLN Ryster on 18 Dec 2008 - 13:58
Indeed congratulations. Sins really is a great game and I can't wait for Entrenchment in a couple of weeks time. Impulse is already great, I just wish you'd hurry up and fix the niggling issues it has
#11 Typhon on 17 Dec 2008 - 23:17
I just got GTA4 last night for my PC and holly crap talk about bugs. I think that is the last pc port game I will ever buy. R6V 2 played 2x better on my older pc so I do not know. It reminds me of Halo 2 for PC plays like crap on a high powered pc and looks like crap.

Prince Of Persia beat Bionic Commando Rearmed for best platformer?
World Of Goo beat Bejeweled Twist for best puzzle game?
Crysis Warhead beat FarCry 2 / GRID for graphics technology?

Those are some pretty dodgy results, though at least GRID got best PC racer (definitely an underrated game).
#12.1 Vezineth on 18 Dec 2008 - 07:54
Far Cry was just a lousy port and boring as hell. Warhead on the other hand is like a new Crysis altogether which is amazing.

I played crysis warhead, then crysis and later farcry2, crysis warhead was awesome, crysis was fine (but a lot of annoying bugs and some stupid and boring episode). Currently i am playing farcry2 is slow as hell and boring as sh*t.

WTF why isn't the Lich King the best expnasion?
#13.1 +TCLN Ryster on 18 Dec 2008 - 13:59
Because it isnt?
#14 rr_dRock on 18 Dec 2008 - 14:56
The only reason they picked GTA IV for best action game on PC is because its GTA IV. It doesnt matter how buggy it is, i could put up a crappy porno, call it grand theft auto and it'd win awards. The series is amazing, but GTA IV sucks for PC. Its a horrible half-assed port.
#15 hotdog963al on 18 Dec 2008 - 16:05
GTA IV... *Face palm*
#16 qdave on 18 Dec 2008 - 20:00
that list is pathtic
#17 Anaron on 20 Dec 2008 - 09:48
I'm glad to see Sins of a Solar Empire up there.
