IGN has released the 10 best selling PC games of 2008. They were:

  1. Spore (Electronic Arts)
  2. Age of Conan: Hyborian Adventures (Funcom)
  3. Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning (Electronic Arts)
  4. The Sims 2 FreeTime (Electronic Arts)
  5. Spore Creature Creator (Electronic Arts)
  6. Sins of a Solar Empire (Stardock)
  7. The Sims 2 Apartment Life (Electronic Arts)
  8. The Sims 2 Kitchen & Bath Interior Design Stuff (Electronic Arts)
  9. Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War - Soulstorm (THQ)
  10. The Sims Castaway Stories (Electronic Arts)

Sins of a Solar Empire made the top 10 despite having no CD copy protection or DRM and with half its revenue coming through digital distribution via Impulse which isn't counted in the official sales tallies. Note: Stardock is a Neowin partner.

I don't know how reliable this list is when World of Warcraft isn't in there. It's constantly in the top 5 best sellers every week and every month according to NPD but yet it isn't even in the top 10 here? Seems odd to me. Not even counting how many copies Lich King sold by now.

I don't know ANY BODY who plays ANY version of THE SIMS... but that game is always on the top lists...

I find quite entertaining that Spore tops both the best selling and most pirated lists :-P

This List is so unreliable. First there aren't any details of the sources of the sales, second there aren't any numbers, third and what makes me suspect hard on this, is that how can Blizzard World of Warcraft: Wrath of Lich King lunch last month isn't on the TOP10 list, if only on the first 24 hours sold more than 2.4 million copies and last but not the least we're not even close the sales in December so, it's too soon to have this list accurate.

Congrats to Stardock.

Nice to see that there's a publisher out there that doesn't blow a huge amount of cash on copy protection, which does very little to deter piracy while punishing their paying customers.

Hopefully others will take note.

That is one ugly list.

The Sims franchise continues to be on these top ten lists ever since it began. It's like never off the top ten lists. How many people bought Sims games!? There must be 20 million copies sold by now?
