Error lets users play UT3 online, for free

Apparently Epic didn't cover all of their "DRM bases" when they launched the two free Steam week-ends. Anyone who participated in that weekend got a temp key that worked for that weekend.

But there is a problem... Those keys can also be used to install the retail copy of the game. Not only can they be used to install the game, but you can use them to play online pass the free weekend period. Yup, if you were a part of that week-end, you can use that key to play online until Epic figures out what they have done or figure out how to fix it...

Looks like a little bit of karma to Cliff Bleszinski (aka CliffyB), Design Director at Epic, who back in September of 2008, basically accused any PC gamer that can put in a video card to be a pirate.

I guess I should have saved that key after all

I knew I should've looked into that Steam offer.

That's what I was thinking.

Over the weekend, they let you download and play it for free using a trial code, and then you got it with a discount at the end if you liked it, I think. But it looks like you got a major discount

Because I tried to activate the Steam version, lol.

I'll probably end up getting it on Steam before the offer ends anyway. I've got until the 22nd, and it's only £8.39!

Does EPIC really care? UT is just a glorfied "demo" of the amazing Unreal Engine... They must make enough on licensing that... Moreover, everyone who wanted it, must have got it by now - especially as it's been SO cheap for the last 6 months or so (on ALL three formats PC, XBOX and PS3)...
btw, I really love my PS3 copy more than the PC version - can't wait for the Titan pack; the Black Patch is truely great...

That last line in this article is troll fodder to say the least. If you just click the link and read the quote, it's very obvious CliffyB doesn't call hardware competent people pirates, all he says is: "if you know enough how to change a video card, you know enough to pirate a game", which translates to "pretty much anybody with a PC these days can pirate a game if they want to", and frankly, he's 100% correct.

"Here's the problem right now; the person who is savvy enough to want to have a good PC to upgrade their video card, is a person who is savvy enough to know bit torrent to know all the elements so they can pirate software. Therefore, high-end videogames are suffering very much on the PC. "

Please explain how he was misquoted? He led himself into that trap.

He's pointing out how easy it is to pirate software, not actually accusing anyone of it. It's like saying anyone who can drive a car can also drink drive. It's not accusing anyone of drink driving, just showing that if you can drive, you can be drunk while doing it and so be caught drink driving.

Wouldn't it be a simple fix to invalidate all those temp keys issued over the free weekend? Unless they were too careless in not keeping track of keys...
