Looks like rumors are flying that Netflix, the online DVD rental & video streaming service, may be coming to the Sony Playstation 3 console. While this may not be surprising to some as the Xbox 360 already has the the service support built into the Xbox 360 since the NXE update, but what may be surprising is the method that they are going to do it.

Netflix, will require a special disc that will allow streaming of any movie to the console. What this disc actually does no one is really sure, we can only guess that it will be some sort of DRM will be loaded onto the PS3 to make the movies work. It also looks like the disc itself will cost around $9.99 US.

The bigger question is, if support for Netflix is coming, why can't they add native support of the client via a firmware update?

as both having a PS3 & 360, i would pass unless the disk offers ability to browse whole catalog from the PS3, instead of just watching whats in instant queue

yeah, they should definitely offer a firmware update as i see no reason to pop in a disk just to use their service.

They probably do this so that they don't have to give Sony a cut.

Yeah, this whole "put in the disc to use Netflix" idea seems rather silly when the software could just as easily be downloaded from PSN and installed on the system. I already have one of the Roku Netflix boxes and would love to be able to move it to one of my other TVs and use my PS3 to play my Netflix stuff on my main TV. One less remote in the living room!

Better yet, why can't they add more CONTENT, and more modern content besides tv shows...
#3.1 roadwarrior on 25 Mar 2009 - 16:22
They are limited in what content they can add by the people who hold the rights to the material. Just because they have a DVD or Blu-Ray disc in their library doesn't automatically give them the right to stream it to millions of people without extra licensing fees.

actually I would like this. I am looking at a ps3 as a media server to connect to my computer. This would be a bonus. Plus if the rumors are true about a price cut for the console happen then I would definitely get it

the PS3 is great as a media extender, not so much as a server though
but yeah, this + MKV support would be a killer :-)

They won't add in native support because Sony wants blu-ray (and not direct download/streaming) to succeed.

Uhhh, did you forget that Sony themselves have a streaming/download service for movies on the PS3?

Right. With as much as they charge, they are certainly not helping the direct download/streaming cause.

And you do realize that the prices they charge are no different than that of cable and satellite tv companies with their pay per view charges, correct?

Unsuccessful troll is unsuccessful.

One other thing to note is that these Netflix surveys don't always result in products mentioned being released. It greatly depends on the feedback they recieve and often many other factors. They had one a while back that asked about interest in a new upgraded version of the Roku box (more like the Apple TV, with a drive for local storage), but that has yet to see the light of day either.

hence why this is a rumor :p

No idea what the disc is for, it could be to bypass any exclusivity deals MS have in regards to Netflix on the 360.

Are there PS3 Apps?
I'd love to see apps for PS3 like I have for my iPod Touch.
#9.1 morficus on 25 Mar 2009 - 18:50
what kind of "apps" did you have in mind?

Maybe something to: listen to music? watch videos? maybe look at pictures on your TV? Or maybe youtube or hulu on it? oh wait... those are all things that the PS3 already does :-p
#10 morficus on 25 Mar 2009 - 18:48
load of bullocks...having to put a disc in to my system every time I want to stream a movie? Seems counter-intuitive IMO

also, I'm a bit surprised about this... especially since Sony is in bed with BlockBuster. I expected to see a BlockBuster streaming service on the PS3 before NetFlix. Guess life is full of surprises :-P

who doesent have a computer laying around the house somewheres?
#11.1 AltoidBox on 26 Mar 2009 - 00:48
Well, that's also $40. Granted, it does more than just Netflix. But you have to have a PC running for it to work, and the PC & PS3 can't share the same wireless connection or you'll have issues streaming video.
#12 metro on 27 Mar 2009 - 09:25
If you already have Netflix, one could always ISO movies they want to archive and stream it at a later time with the java PS3 Media Server that is able to stream DVD ISO through the network. It's a rather nice touch, and I have archived my personal DVDs so I don't have to pop discs all of the time.

You are welcome to wholesale, like the ugg sale trainers.
