During Nintendo's keynote today at GDC '09, President Satoru Iwata announced a new Zelda game for the DS, titled ‘The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks'.

Very little is known about the game so far, although Iwata did announce Spirit Tracks will be released later this year and revealed the first trailer.

The game plays very similar as the previous DS Zelda title, Phantom Hourglass which was released in October 2007. Spirit Tracks builds off the previous boat mechanic replacing it with a train this time around. During the trailer Link can be seen conducting a train and fighting a giant scorpion with a mounted canon.

As with Phantom Hourglass, the top screen will be used for dungeon puzzles while the bottom is used for gameplay.

A new interesting mechanic was revealed where Link can also be seen controlling enemies, fending them off against one another and sneaking around behind to hit them. According to GameZine, he also has the ability to create enemies too.

YES! I'm so excited. Phantom Hourglass was awesome; I have no doubt this will be just as good.

Legend of Zelda FOREVER. (It's my favorite series of all time, in case you couldn't tell.)

Would care more if it was a Wii Zelda, PH was pretty good but not compelling enough to keep me playing.

trains in zelda... humm... doesn't seem to fit the time period, or am I the only one thinking that

um.. there's some other stuff in the Legend of Zelda series that is also pretty far-fetched... '[0_o]' i'm not sure if time is linear in Zelda land, but i'm pretty sure it's a different 'place' as well. i think they want us to make-believe with them. just my 2cents.. word.

The time line in Zelda has never been confirmed. There is actually 2 different theories. One continuous story with a different hero and another time line which splits back on the GBA games and the ending of OoT.

Bleh. I'm a big Zelda fan (I think), but I actually thought that The Phantom Hourglass was a pretty bad game - I just hope this is nothing like that! If only it were like Link's Awakening *dreams*.

Not a fan of trains in a fantasy game. What's next Link using his cell phone to ask Zelda where she is?
