What sort of shenanigans have you been up to this time, EA? It seems that during the promotional period for the Godfather II, EA may have sent out brass knuckles to members of the press, somehow forgetting the fact that shipping these is illegal, and illegal in the very state EA is based in.

EA contacted Kotaku, stating that the company is currently asking for all of these back so they can be properly disposed of, but refused to comment further. EA might be in a nice bit of trouble because of this; have a read of the following excerpt from the California (the state where EA is based) Penal Code Section 12020(a):

Manufactures or causes to be manufactured, imports into the state, keeps for sale, or offers or exposes for sale, or who gives , lends, or possesses any cane gun or wallet gun, any undetectable firearm, any firearm which is not immediately recognizable as a firearm, any camouflaging firearm container, any ammunition which contains or consists of any flechette dart, any bullet containing or carrying an explosive agent, any ballistic knife, any multiburst trigger activator, any nunchaku, any short-barreled shotgun, any short-barreled rifle, any metal knuckles, any belt buckle knife, any leaded cane, any zip gun, any shuriken, any unconventional pistol, any lipstick case knife, any cane sword, any shobi-zue, any air gauge knife, any writing pen knife, any metal military practice handgrenade or metal replica handgrenade, or any instrument or weapon of the kind commonly known as a blackjack, slungshot, billy, sandclub, sap, or sandbag.

Adding fuel to the fire, possessing an illegal weapon (such as brass knuckles) is a class 1 misdemeanor. It'll be interesting to see how this plays out. Keep an eye out for further information as it is revealed.

I would not hope for that. They publish a lot of games that I would miss if they were shut down.

Yeah, let's all hope for thousands more people to get laid off... not.
#1.3 Recon415 on 11 Apr 2009 - 22:36
They need to clean up their act, not get shut down. EA produces alot of todays games.

And is quantity a stamp of quality? No, they produce a ton of crap and they deserve to get hit, hard and clean up their act as you said.

They've also managed to put out quite a few decent titles in recent years as they've expanded their focus on new IP's. This isn't 2005 anymore, so stop with the same old rhetoric.

And that's what you call a personal opinion, I personally haven't enjoyed really anything published or created by EA in the last few years, most of it has been rubbish followed by 50 expansions. So stop this Hug, peace and love crap, I don't think they changed at all.

The "clean up their act" part makes it sound like EA goes around doing illegal stuff all the time.

Ya they should fire the CEO instead, or shut down the whole corporation.

Yes, let's shut down the entire company over one blunder. In the long run, do the hundreds of people who lose their job matter?

Excactly my thoughts! lol

None of this shut down the company crap. Just don't fire anyone over a stupid mistake like this. Enough people are unemployed at this time, this could be seen as cruel and unjust if more were made unemployed just because of a silly blunder!

That is exactly what I want to know. I mean... someone joking about it sure, but these actually being manufactured and sent out?! It makes you think, really.

I'm sure there had to be more to the promotion than just a pair of brass knuckles - something not listed in the news piece that would make the whole thing make a bit more sense.

I read through the Kotaku post a few times, and as far as I can tell, nope

This is incredibly bizarre, what was the point of this? How is this supposed to promote sales? Are they just trying to get attention by starting a storm?
#6 nonick on 11 Apr 2009 - 22:09
What kind of retarded promotion is that?

Its not illegal if you call them paper weights.
That's how I got mine in the mail.
#8.1 TRC on 11 Apr 2009 - 23:31
Kind of like how some places can get around local laws by calling their products "back massagers". Yeah that's what they are, lol.

EA didn't accidentally ship these weapons. They intentionally shipped them but were unaware that it was illegal to do so.
#11.1 nunjabusiness on 12 Apr 2009 - 12:00
Exactly! - There was no "accidentally" to it.

What, they had a box open ready to ship and - oh no, I accidentally tripped and dropped some brass knucks into the box? Then it was accidentally sealed and accidentally taken by the shipping guys?

Oh and BTW, what exactly is a "slungshot?"
#12 Windows7even on 12 Apr 2009 - 05:22
nobodys perfect...if it were rockstar they mighta shipped out ak's or rocket launchers
#13 tainted_c0bra on 12 Apr 2009 - 08:28
I wish I was one of the people that recieved the brass knuckles so I can go put them on and deck someone in the face and knock there chicklets down there throat, A.I.G. executives ring a bell ?!

I think he's trying to say that he doesn't expect there to be any criminal charges, despite the breaking of criminal law.
#15 Geranium_Z__NL on 12 Apr 2009 - 14:36
now EA is gonna pay for their crimes Lol

EA is a bigger publisher than it is a game maker. Most of the great games are made by others and only published by EA. So as someone already mentioned that if they did get shut down the good games would simply be picked up by other publishers. Steam anyone??? Besides EA is the Microsoft of the gaming industry they'll simply pay their million dollar fines for how ever many brass knuckles they sent out and have a record of that many #1 misdemeanors, no biggie, just another slap on the wrist. They would have been better off just sending horse heads instead of brass knuckles.
#16.1 Quikboy on 13 Apr 2009 - 00:35
"Besides EA is the Microsoft of the gaming industry"

- So that's a good thing, right? BTW: Microsoft IS part of the gaming industry.

What was their legal department doing?
#18 XerXis on 13 Apr 2009 - 08:58
any lipstick case knife

what?
#19 metro on 13 Apr 2009 - 22:49
I was hoping EA would send out stilettos. That would be ace.
#20 DaGrayMan on 14 Apr 2009 - 03:07
Eh. They'll have to pay a large fine. Then, they'll turn to the government for bailout money.
#21 SakuraKira on 14 Apr 2009 - 12:20
Sigh... They can't use the excuse that they didn't really think it was a weapon, because it's used as a promotional item for the Godfather II game, where I'm assuming there are some brass knuckles being shoved in someone's face at some point during play.

I really wonder about the common sense of people sometimes. Multiple individuals were involved in this, and not one said that it might be a bad idea? Maybe we should look up the state statues regarding shipping weapons before we even order the damn things?
