Todd Hollenshead, co-owner and CEO of ID Software, has told GameSpot in a recent interview they have a lot of new stuff to show at E3 this year.

"I expect that we'll have some new stuff at E3 that we haven't announced yet, along with Wolfenstein and other known projects."

In the same interview Todd also gave some insight to the development of Doom 4 and what gamers can expect. When asked if Doom 4 is still a long way from completion Todd had this to say:

"Yeah, I mean, we're in--it's not preproduction, but we're still early on in that. The team is relatively new. We're still actually hiring people for the team as well, so it's not completely built out. But we really just started on that last year. It's very much deep in development. But everything I've seen on it is classic Doom, so I don't really have worries that people aren't going to like it and start talking about it."

Doom 4 was announced in May 2008 by John Carmack after some initial hints dropped at QuakeCon ‘07. Apparently the game will neither be a sequel, prequel or reboot for the series according to Todd:

"Gosh, that's actually an excellent question. It's not a sequel to Doom 3, but it's not a reboot either. Doom 3 was sort of a reboot. It's a little bit different than those, and if I told you why, I would get my ass kicked when I got back. So I'll just have to leave it at that."

Doom 4 will make use of ID's new tech engine, ID Tech 5, as will their new title Rage. The company has made a strong come back to the gaming scene after a few years absence and have enjoyed recent success with their internet browser release of Quake 3 Arena aka Quake Live.

Yeah, it is just hard to get excited about a repackaging of the same title. Seriously, the DooM series has been around for decades. id Software was at one point the most innovative developers in the business, and their work literally laid the corner stone for the industry. However, it seems like now it is the same tired titles year after year; where has the imagination and innovation gone. Really, another DooM release? They just released Quake (Arena) Live and are preparing for another Wolfenstein. They really need something fresh to remain relative in the market.

Rage may seem like an interesting game but I'm somewhat doubtful of Doom 4. I believe the game's success lies entirely upon the "impressiveness" of id Tech 5, their latest game engine. So far it looks good but it's already ageing. I mean, it was shown to developers at E3 2007. It's already 2009! Crytek is already showing videos of their latest game engine, CryENGINE 3.
