On April 21, Valve will be releasing the first downloadable content for the highly successful first-person shooter Left 4 Dead. It will available for both the Xbox 360 and PC, free of charge. The downloadable content titled the "Survival Pack" will make the remaining two more campaigns playable in Versus Mode as well as adding another gameplay mode, Survival.

On the official Left 4 Dead blog, Valve's Kerry Davis and Scott Dalton explain the rules to the new gameplay mode. "Survival Mode pits your team against never ending waves of infected. Sounds simple. Just trap the survivors in a small part of a map, unleash the hordes, and record the longest time. Survival Mode, which will be released next week, is actually a bit more than that."

They continue to say that with the "extreme pace" of the gameplay mode, "the number of zombies killed in a single round often outnumbers an entire campaign."

Survival Mode will be very different from Versus Mode for a number of different reasons. "The Hospital Elevator, for example, might seem like an easy Crescendo Event to conquer. Hit the elevator button and holdout until the doors open for a quick escape. In Survival Mode, however, the area begins locked down. Areas open as the hordes come in, breaking down the doors to reach the survivors. In each room there are additional caches of vital pills, pipes, and Molotovs. By moving from location to location, using up the plentiful supplies as needed, a team can maximize their time in a game where the elevator never arrives to offer escape. In other maps, items may be less plentiful and require careful planning on their usage. Managing one's inventory and resources works hand-in-hand with teamwork in Survival Mode."

The following chart shows just how chaotic Survival Mode will be. When games last beyond the expected ten minutes, new tanks will spawn every 45 seconds, spawning every 10 seconds when the game lasts fifteen minutes.

spawning tanks at 10 seconds, jesus.

how the hell do you expect to win, when spammed by tanks. especially on expert mode, it takes a while for the tanks to die (its like 6000hp!

There is no "win" - it's just who can survive the longest.

The goal is time, and if a team can last past 10 minutes, then hang on.

Now I am seriously thinking about getting the game. I've played it, its amazing, just never had the chance to buy it. Looks like now is the time. Just need to find myself a discounted retail copy.

Keep your eyes open. I got it on Steam when it was going for $25 bucks a while back.

Like Frazell said keep your eyes open. I have a feeling / heard that steam is gonna have a "push the game with DLC" weekend next weekend if its a big hit.

If they see that the number of downloads corresponds with the number of people playing, then for those who havent bought it yet, they will put it on sale.

Just wake for the weekend.

I'm shocked that some companies still offer FREE DLCs that are also actually more than just a new car or another feature that should be there at the first place.

I didn't like this game. The gameplay was too frenetic for me, ya know? Then again, I never did like zombie-hunting games. Give me something with a little strategic element, or at least some good long sniping lines and a decent single-player plot to it.

I'm kinda disappointed though... I love the game, but was really hoping for a new campaign... survival mode has already been there since the game came out. My friends and I love calling for the extraction, then just seeing how long we can hold out. Works best on normal or versus. Three tanks at once anybody? Had a couple games versus with all friends and we'd pick em up as the infected till they could'nt be incapped anymore. I highly doubt survival mode will compare with this. Also, holding out on death toll was always fun cause you get back to the safe room during the holdout, it was fun to see how many laps could be made. Survival mode might be a bit different, offering us more scenery, but it was always better to holdout versus style.
