Video games based on Hollywood blockbusters have long been the pet hate of the industry, and it seems things aren't going to change anytime soon if todays reports are anything to by.

According to Variety, Legendary Pictures are said to be keen to develop games based on existing and original properties, which include 300, Superman Returns, Watchmen and The Dark Knight. Their first release is said to be The Lost Patrol based on their supernatural thriller due in 2010.

Although a movie studios foray into the video game industry may seem daunting, the Californian based studio has come well armed having recruited former EA executive Kathy Vrabeck to run the division.

Legendary Pictures are currently adapting both Gears of War and World of Warcraft for the big screen, with Len Wiseman (Underworld, Die Hard 4.0) said to be directing the former.

We really do not need another company making rushed games on old engines. Although I am interested to see how the Game -> Film thing turns out

If it's an old but still decent game engine, that's fine, but rushed / poor game play usually kill it for me.

my biggest issue with movie tie-in games is that they always seem to be handed down to third rate development studios who rush the development to meet release deadlines of the parent movie. This produces a lack-lustre game and experience which will naturally get poor scores on most reviews.

Spend more time and make it a game worth playing that people WANT to buy, not make a cheap game for the sake of poorly maximising on revenue; a game that you only play once through and end up slinging in the nearest blockbusters cheap stack.

It would be heaven if all the movie to game adaptations are like Riddick.

Wasn't the latest one a failure somewhat?

It wasnt a failure. Its just that it wasnt a new game. Is the old Scape From Butcher's Bay with missions added and graphics improved. So overall it's a nive deal to those who dont played the first game.

I was about to said GoldenEye as well, as many have mentioned, videogames based on movies are usually rushed so that they come around the same time as the movie it is based on. With Goldeneye, Rare & Nintendo certainly took their time, they game was released almost 2 years after the movie, but it was well worth it.

Lol, yeah, GoldenEye is certainly another exception! I miss GoldenGun mode!

Headed up by a former EA executive? Talk about failing before your feet hit the ground...

Movies and Games have completely different production schedules. Movie based tie-ins to games are more likely to produce a quality movie than game based tie-ins to movies.

They really need to make a "This is Sparta!" game.
It better be good though, or they'll have a reason to say, "Today we dine in hell!"

When will anyone learn that games and movies should not always be mixed together?

Just stick to making games based on some movie's canon that expand that universe. Riddick was an example of this philosophy and it succeded (even though the newest expansion is not that brilliant).

Game to movie adaptations, isn't that some sort of a downgrade?

if you mean by the loss of quality from going from one type of entertainment to another, then i agree...
