In an interview with Major Nelson, Robert Bowling, Community Relations Manager at Infinity Ward announced that there are currently 13 million unique Xbox Live users that have played Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. Activision-Blizzard announced earlier this month that the title had sold 13 million copies worldwide across the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC.

"The thing we learned the most [from Modern Warfare 1] was how much focus goes into multiplayer," said Rob when asked about what the team has learned from the first game and will be carrying through to Modern Warfare 2."

"I mean, Call of Duty 4 on Xbox Live just exploded. Right now we're at 13 million unique users on 360 and that's insane."

Bowling continued to emphasize the need to create a strong multiplayer component when making a video game. "The focus that goes into multiplayer…and that's why community specifically, is such a tent pole for Modern Warfare 2."

The statement comes after Infinity Ward released the first gameplay trailer for Modern Warfare 2, sequel to the 2007 hit Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. The upcoming first-person shooter will feature a longer single-player campaign, new weapons and an upgraded patching system. Modern Warfare 2 is due for release on November 10, 2009.

CoD4 multiplayer has too much spam, I can't ever find a server where people don't just throw 3 grenades, run into loads of enemies spraying, die and then repeat.

wholly ****-moke! how many more adding PC and PS3 players? I didn't imagine this game to be that huge! the U.S pop is now around 300 millions, if it's all in da U.S, that's 4% of US pop online playing cod4!

CoD 4 has to to be the best and I can't wait for Modern Warefare 2 especially the online. CoD was absolute pointless just didn't make sense whatsoever!

COD4 was crap for players who actually like skill based games.

just because you suck at it gives you no reason to bash a game that 12,999,99 people like

Search and Destroy is very skill based... and fun.

There's a problem.

The game sold 13 millions across all versions of the game. XBox, PC, PS, ... Yet 13 millions unique gamers played the game over XBox Live. I did not know PS3 and PC users could log in XBox Live and play COD 4 ...

"Activision-Blizzard announced earlier this month that the title had sold 13 million copies worldwide across the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC."

"I mean, Call of Duty 4 on Xbox Live just exploded. Right now we're at 13 million unique users on 360 and that's insane."

Someone did not get his math right ...

That just confirm was i always thought. When they puclish XBox Live numbers they add silver and 48 hours demo accounts. Many people have multiple silver and demo accounts. I know people who loged in to play Halo on not less than 10 differents accounts ...

They should add only gold account then they publish XBox Live numbers.

You're surely forgetting about 2nd hand games purchases which won't add to the number of games Activision has sold but will increase the number of users.

Silver can't play it online, so I must be missing something.

I highly doubt those numbers. First, it did not sell 13 million copies on 360 alone. Second, Xbox Live only has about 17-19 million members. Are you telling me like 75% of ALL Live members play COD4? I highly doubt that.

Do they count OEM copies? I was still mad at the CoD frachise for skipping PC for CoD3 and bought CoD4 8 months after it's release on ebay in the form of an OEM disc from a video card. My friends had told me it was well worth it and after a few months I picked it up... silly me for holding out so long.

But the title and the numbers in the article do not line up.

Call of Duty should be reserved for Single Player. "Call of Duty" means to do things for your squad. What do you do in multiplayer? Kill, kill, kill and kill. Objectives? And people should be forced to play single player before playing multiplayer.

I will always never play the multiplayer of CoD and think CoD as a single player experience.

Well, I can tell you one reason Cod4 shot up about a month ago.
cvars/dvars on the Xbox 360.

This guy filmed me
This guy filmed my bro
There is a crap more. It was kept real private for about 3 weeks, on the 4th it was leaked to the public, and patch in 4 days. It was hella fun while it lasted. I can't go back to Cod4 though. Keep pressing A to noclip haha.

Agreed though, those numbers are funny. Can't wait till MW2.
