The NPD Group, the top game-industry research firm, released its list of the top 20 PC game titles this past week for the month of May. The month's most popular title was World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King, overtaking both The Sims 2 Double Deluxe and World of Warcraft: Battle Chest as expected.

Wrath of the Lich King, the second expansion for Blizzard Entertainment's 12 million user strong massively multiplayer online role-playing game was just one of five games in the World of Warcraft series to claim a spot on the chart. World of Warcraft: Battle Chest claimed 3rd, World of Warcraft claimed 4th, World of Warcraft: Burning Crusade claimed 11th and Warcraft III Battle Chest claimed 18th.

The following are the top 20 PC games in the United States for the month of May. Rankings are calculated from the NPD Group's survey of retailers and does not include online sales or digitally distributed content.

1. World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King - Blizzard
2. The Sims 2 Double Deluxe - Electronic Arts
3. World of Warcraft Battle Chest - Blizzard
4. World of Warcraft - Blizzard
5. Empire: Total War - Creative Assembly/Sega

I'm going to guess that Sims3 will be in the #1 spot in June.

StarCraft? Diablo? Warcraft III? What is this, 2002?

No just an outdate way of measuring PC game sales, without online sales.

if L4D is 7th and most sales of that game are online... useless report.

Diablo and Starcraft still rock!!!

When D3 was announced I reinstalled D2 LOD and started playing again I think it beats alot of games that have been made in the last 5 years.

D3 will be the top selling game of 2010 I'm guessing....

Why is this news? What's is there about this that makes it different from the April or March chart? Or is it just highlighting how quiet the PC games market is?
#6.1 vetLOC on 18 Jun 2009 - 01:10
Uh, because it's news? And it's highlighting how horrible NPD is at tracking PC games sales. Because they suck at it for not including online sales and digital distribution stuff.

This sort of says that PC games aren't selling. Some of these are OLD games, not to say they shouldn't sell well, but they shouldn't be competing with new games in a top 20 list.

Hardcore console games aren't selling that well this year either.

This is not surprising, because it is these dumbed-down, **** console ports and rehashes that are responsible for the decline of PC games as well. Publishers force developers to rehash past successes, rather than allow developers to risk making original games that might not sell.

They are going to have to do something, because the market is saturated with nearly identical games. Almost every game that comes out is neatly fit into a genre, so that originality and innovation becomes impossible. Furthermore, they insist on making games easy, because console controllers are unsuitable for playing hardcore FPS, RTS, and RPG games. So we get stuck with 3rd person-oriented games that are superficially converted to 1st person.

Nearly every game I've bought in the last 4-5 years has been crap.

BF2 and Crysis are about the only exceptions

#8.1 sin-ergy on 17 Jun 2009 - 10:54
Too bad both of the ones you bought are also crap

you are not fit for enlightenment my child!

* actually my original snarky reply didn't make any sense... what i meant to say was that his exceptions also are crap. anyway, i'm being an ass and going way off topic...

Not really, remember, these values are only counting store bought games. If it counted downloads (legal downloads that is) and online orders I doubt you would see nearly as many of the older games. Just look how many games Steam offers...none of which (except things like The Orange Box and Left 4 Dead and a few others) are even available in stores.

I sure do miss the days when PC games were more than a collection of cookie cutter crap.

And I miss the days when comments didn't use stupid terms like "cookie-cutter crap". What does that even mean? Popular?
#14 Anaron on 21 Jun 2009 - 11:18
The exclusion of online sales or digitally distributed content makes this list biased. I'm sure we'd see the newer titles up there if they were to include sales on Steam or Direct2Drive, for example.
