Nintendo makes Wii web browser free, again

If you want to browse the web on your Wii, but didn't want to fork over some cash to do so (and did not get the application when it was free in 2007), you can now start up your Wii and get surfing. The Wii Internet Channel, a web browser for the Wii from Opera was previously 500 Wii Points, but starting today, it is available for no cost. If you purchased the Wii browser before, you will be getting a credit for one free game download later this year.

The browser also received an update and now includes Flash Lite 3.1, so it will likely support basic Flash content like YouTube, but no Hulu or Netflix streaming. This means the Wii and PlayStation 3 now both include basic web browsers with Flash support and the only lag behind is the Xbox 360. In Microsoft's defense, they are working on directly building content into the NXE, instead of providing users with their choice of content via a browser.

The Wii web browser was developed by Opera and was designed from the ground up to work with the Wiimote, so it supports the same web standards as the desktop Opera client. To add to that, Opera also developed the browser on the Nintendo DS. For more information, or to download the Wii Internet Channel, check out the Wii Shop Channel on your console.

It's probably a good thing that the Xbox doesn't have a browser, cause Opera would be whining and wanting to be the ones developing it.

PS: That was a joke, before I get flamed for being "Anti-Opera"

But, in all seriousness, the Xbox could probably do with a browser, just to bring it on par with the other consoles.

A joke?... no its not a joke you are probably right on the money

browsers on consoles suck. My network port on my computer got zapped by a surge and I had to use my ps3 for emergency internet access to quickly browse prices for a possibly replacement wireless card. It was clunky to say the least. A few sites like amazon displayed fine, but newegg didn't display at all and I wasn't aware the site ran that many plugins.

In this day and age, I'm sure people who other ways to access the internet other than their console. As a note I do like the Wii's news "streaming" service where it lets you read articles and weather but it's not necessarily go anywhere browsing like the ps3 is.

Sounds like the Wii's browser beats the PS3 then - have you tried it?

i've never actually tried the wii's browser since you had to pay for it. I mean they have a service where you can look at news articles from AP, CNN, etc but Nintendo posts these to the Wii system already so all you're doing is reading the article. I can deal with something like that.

For heaven's sake do you childish anti-opera trolls have to keep posting this crap everywhere?

If XBox get a browser, assuming it's going to be an IE variation, your XBox going to need a full Internet security suite.

it's not about being anti-opera. it's about being anti-whiny bitch. Opera whines too much despite every effort to satisfy them. If i could describe opera by a book i would say that opera is "If you give a mouse a cookie" with opera being the mouse and microsoft being the retarded kid who keeps giving.

For being TOO anti whiny-bitch you guys are the ones being whiny biatches now. It's a dead issue. Move on.

It's not the damn point(who really cares if their are).. the point is the inflammatory remarks doesn't have to be said in every damn opera or opera related thread that comes up. just drop it already and move on.

Is this related to Opera 10 being released today? Getting Wii owners knowing the 'opera' name to win desktop market share, perhaps?

Nothing like browsing the web on 480i resolution! Gotta scroll over to avoid seeing an ad banner filling up half your screen.
#3.1 carmatic on 02 Sep 2009 - 17:57
dont Opera have their 'small screen rendering' for things like that? or the 'medium' version, in this case...
#4 zeke009 on 01 Sep 2009 - 21:08
hey, I'm getting a credit for a game later this year. That's cool, guess there is a reason to turn the Wii on at some point this year then.

Since I have no problems comfortably reading websites on my iPhone, I'm guessing this Wii browser is fine in 480i too ... since the iPhone is 320x480 ... it just has a very nice scale ...

Wouldn't that depend on your screen size and resolution?

System 1? This makes no sense.
#6 Tanshin on 01 Sep 2009 - 21:48
Just as a clarification, the 500 point 'credit' only works on NES games of that value.

Nintendo plans to offer the credit at the end of October
#7 AnthoWin on 01 Sep 2009 - 22:07
credit for a free game? good i guess, but i'd rather use the points towards a more expensive wiiware game.
browser on the wii isn't as bad as you think. at least the wiimote solution trumps over the traditional controllers of that of the xbox360 and ps3

Just gave this a go as I wanted to try out BBC iPlayer, awful! Couldnt load any programmes.
#8.1 +Chuckie 18 on 02 Sep 2009 - 01:48
I thought that the BBC had specifically added Wii and PS3 to the list of "Can Play" so to speak?

There are known reported issues with this new version and the iPlayer. See here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/mbiplayer/F13735683?thread=6893890

What the hell??

FLASH LITE 3.1?

The Wii browser had had Flash 7 and has worked with YouTube SINCE RELEASE.

How is it a NEW update to add YouTube support when it always worked with YouTube?
#9.1 KZWings on 02 Sep 2009 - 04:16
Yeah, thats what i was thinking. I've watched flash videos (YouTube) on my Wii too.
#9.2 GreyWolfSC on 02 Sep 2009 - 15:45
The Wii-mail I got never mentioned YouTube. It simply said the browser had been updated to the equivalent of Flash 8 and was now free. It doesn't mention anything specific about whether you could choose your NES game or if they would just give you one.

There is no real need for a web browser on a console :/.

At any rate, props to Nintendo for the refund system. It's good that they took responsibility for that.
#10.1 smithy_dll on 02 Sep 2009 - 07:28
You forget that Microsoft redefined the console as a living room PC.

XBox 360 is meant as a living room pc as a Media Center Extender. And your Media Center has a good browser that does display every site fine. I don't really see the need for a browser in a console. Everyone with internet has a PC aswell anyway.
#11 cork1958 on 02 Sep 2009 - 12:06
Opera is an excellent browser for a console. Light and fast.

As far as browser on a console, don't really see the need either.

It's about time it went free again also.

+1 I have never understood peoples need to surf the web on thier gaming console. Im glad the 360 has no browser, its just one more thing i wont wonder why im not using because im GAMING on it.
#13 Xenomorph on 02 Sep 2009 - 13:33
What good is the Flash update if it still doesn't support the most popular sites?

It has always supported YouTube. Things like Netflix and Hulu would have been great to support. So now here is a "NEW" update - and the story mentions that it supports YouTube, but not Netflix or Hulu.

SO WHAT EXACTLY HAS CHANGED?

Did someone really post a Wii article who has NEVER bothered touching a Wii? Did the author not know that YouTube support has been a part of the browser since release?

#14 carmatic on 02 Sep 2009 - 18:01

does that mean the gestures on the desktop Opera browser also work on the wii?

I'm I the only one who interpreted this as Nintendo removed Wii browser.....
