Sony first launched the PlayStation 3 during the latter half of 2006 in the USA and Japan which was then followed by a March release the following year in the EU. At the time the console was criticised for its high price and bulky design which most considered to be reason enough not to invest their time and money in Sony's third home console.

However, as previously announced, Sony have developed a redesign of the PlayStation 3. Being dubbed as the "slim" by press and gamers alike the new console comes with a smaller form factor and a new price at $299, which some regard as the magic price point that will give a boost to sales across Sony's territories.
This model has now been launched following September 1 across America, Europe and Japan and arrives with a 120gb and the same general specifications as the previous models.

The new model was joined in its launched with a firmware update that was also revealed to be joining the launch of the PS3 "Slim". Released early in the morning on the September 1, the update brings new functionality that includes a quick launcher for recent games that is joined by thumbnails of recent news and PlayStation Store Items.

A new feature added to the Xross Media Bar (XMB) is that of animated and dynamic backgrounds, which using the existing theme feature of the PlayStation 3 gives the user more options to customize their XMB.

New themes will be released over time for free or will come with a premium price tag, joining themes will be a wealth of new Avatars that will also be available for free or more specialised ones that will be charged for, price has yet to be announced, but the first batch are expected to arrive this Thursday coinciding with a PlayStation Store update.

#1.2 Fubar on 02 Sep 2009 - 18:59

#1.3 master2k27 on 02 Sep 2009 - 19:13
yea this updates ads more junk to the xmb
#1.4 Quigley Guy on 02 Sep 2009 - 19:45
one of the worst update to date.
I thought they would be saving something amazing for 3.0... obviously not

Not really, it actually cleaned up the XMB for me. Got rid of the orange ticker thing in the top right hand corner and didn't replace it with that new one that is suppose to go there, no idea why but I'm not complaining

Sucks about the games crashing, I just updated my PS3 to FW3.0 and turned it off again. Sony better fix the game crashing problem ASAP!

#3.1 Quigley Guy on 02 Sep 2009 - 19:45
How long were you waiting beside the stacks?
#3.2 MistaT40 on 02 Sep 2009 - 20:30
How long were you there for and how many times did you go? You could go to another BB and totally see something different.

#3.8 C_Guy on 02 Sep 2009 - 21:50

How is backwards compatibility with the Slim and the new firmware? I want to by a new PS3 NOW but I also want backwards compatability even if it isn't perfect...

Inexistent.

Inexistent? Is that like inflammable, which means REALLY flammable? If the backwards compatibility is that good, maybe I should go pick one of these up...
#4.3 Gangsta on 02 Sep 2009 - 21:24
The term would be nonexistent.

But yeah, it's nonexistent.
#4.4 +Xerxes on 02 Sep 2009 - 21:37
There is no BC, Sony have said it's not coming. All this stuff about how BC is coming is wishful thinking.
#4.5 +Ricardo Gil on 02 Sep 2009 - 21:40
Maybe you guys should update your thesaurus... inexistent and nonexistent mean the exact same.
#4.6 $n!pR on 02 Sep 2009 - 21:42
Still plays PS1 games.

Except they patented technology that makes exactly that possible?

Just like they said they werent going to lower the price? Just give it time they will cave in when this console sales epic phails during the holidays.
#5 PsykX on 02 Sep 2009 - 21:25
It took 4 times to install because of.... the Wifi, or maybe the servers... but oh well, nice update. Nothing revolutionary for sure, but nice one.

I just don't agree that the LBP dynamic theme is $3. I would see this one free, free as the first dynamic theme just to give us a perfect example of the scalability of these new dynamic themes. I guess it works by "getting more revenues" and "not caring about us".
#6 frission on 02 Sep 2009 - 21:41
is this a required update? or can i wait to update until they fix the game crashing bug(s)?

For the record, the first paragraph is simply poor English…
The PlayStation 3 was launched during late 2006 in the US and Japanese markets with a later release in the EU in 2007, one criticism of the console was its high price when it was released and its bulky design.
If it is one sentence like it is written, it should begin something like "When the PlayStation 3…" or else the comma should be a period, separating the two sentences. Also, it says "one criticism of the console was its high price when it was released and its bulky design." which isn't actually "one" criticism…. Neowin needs better authors…
#7.1 +Ricardo Gil on 02 Sep 2009 - 22:01
Come on, it's called damage control... people think about only one criticism when there's actually a lot of them :p

Authors are good, what Neowin needs is some editors and reviewers. Not sure anyone is willing to donate their time though. Remember, the authors aren't being paid, so don't expect too much. I, for one, miss the days where the news here was just copy-and-pasted with the source receiving full credit.

I like most of what Sam posts, but for instance:
http://www.neowin.net/news/software/09/09/...era-10-released

The whole first paragraph is just a bunch of useless non-sense that I wish I had not read...

The larger problem is how sensitive the news staff appears to be. They take criticism as personal attacks, instead of using it to their advantage and becoming better writers.

In the end, a quick read through by someone other than the author will no-doubt increase the quality of the news postings here. I have a hard time catching the flaws in my own report writing, and that is why at my work we have a rigorous review process.

I honestly agree with you 100%. This is why, in my opinion, Neowin's news has degraded a lot over the years…

I don't know about the others, but I take criticism just fine as long as it's done in a respectable manner.
Some will just say crap and never actually offer advice.

You can use the report button or PM me, we can even have a discussion about if need be, but it will never be ignored.

soo.. ps3 slim no BC, sucks.

Anyone made sure firmware 3.0 doesn't accidentally kill BC on an otherwise BC happy machine?
#10.1 Skwerl on 03 Sep 2009 - 17:51
Nothing was harmed on my old 60 gig machine. I'm kind of surprised to see the sparkles in the background. I actually love them, but it takes some of the elegance away from the original and gives it a tiny bit of a feminine feel.
#11 Kreuger on 03 Sep 2009 - 02:42
Ive had no problems but Ive only played COD5 so far. I happen to like the friends list now.
#12 dogmai on 03 Sep 2009 - 03:07
The slim has been out here for almost a week now or at least 3-4 days. I can't remember exactly
#13 dreamhacker on 03 Sep 2009 - 06:39
I've installed it, and so far Fallout 3 has not crashed more than it did before the update. Haven't tested other games, though.

And I like the new XMB changes, it looks much cleaner now (though, I cannot put my finger on what actually make it feel so :p). Also, it now seems to automatically enable the XSUB subtitles when I play my DivX movies, which is nice.

I bought an original X-Box and a later version PS2's when my nephew was young. We've had quite a few hours of fun with both, though I rarely use it when alone. I did spend a few hours with Formula 1 (2005), which really gave extra enjoyment watching the Grand Prix.

I often consider replacing the old consoles, but with all the problems with the Xbox 360, and the staggering price of the PS3, I've never seen the point of upgrading. There just doesn't seem to be the must-have game, and I still OBJECT MOST STRONGLY that game I have require hours of play time and dedication, before I can "unlock" the advanced stages etc. The console manufacturers suck (Sony's quality has long since gone to **** on all products), and the games writers deserve lean times, until they understand the millions of casual gamers that do not want to spend their life getting to the top level.

Well roughly 12 million WoW players disagree with you on that one

Played many hours of Motorstorm 2 and Killzone 2 since installing the firmware 3.0 and am happy to say I've had no issues so far.
