In an interview with VG247, Dorian Bloch, director of Chart-Track claims that UK PlayStation 3 sales have risen over 1,000 percent since the release of the PlayStation 3 Slim on September 1.

"I'm not surprised by it," said Bloch in a phone conversation. "There's a lot of demand for the Slim."

Chart-Track has issued the following statistics:

  • PS3 is shown as ‘+999%' over week 35. The system is set to display +999% when it encounters huge increases, so the actual increase in PS3 unit hardware sell-through is around 11X – so 11 times what PS3 was selling the previous week. Obviously people have been waiting for PS3 Slim. • 360 is up +29% over the same time period.
  • PS3 is the lead format in week 36 and is outselling 360/DS Lite/Wii (not combined, individually – they were all selling around the same amount in week 36) by approx 3:1. • PS3 is the lead hardware format for week 36, 2009 and the last time it did this was back in week 1, 2008.
  • PS3 software sales have increased by 17% (units) over week 35 to claim 3rd place in terms of software format units behind 360 & Wii (up from 4th place in week 35).
  • PS3 software sales have increased by 5% (value) over week 35 to remain 2nd by value behind 360 (was also No2 in week 35, up from No4 in week 34).

Note that PS2 Slim came out in week 44, 2004 and showed an increase of +310% over the previous week (an increase of 3X).
Comparing the sales of all PS2 hardware in week 44, 2004 and all PS3 hardware in week 36, 2009 this shows that PS2 outsold PS3 by 21%, but of course PS2 was much cheaper at that point in the life cycle (approx £100) compared to the ASP for PS3 last week (approx £244). PS2 Slim came out in the first week of November 2004 and in Q4 you woud be expecting healthier numbers for most hardware formats.

so what the ps3 slim sell 10x over the previous on the first week of release .. seams very reasonable number to me with all the excitements of a smaller console, promos and price cut .. not to mention also that sales relatively goes down in the period between announcement of price cuts and the time it takes place

It makes sense if the previous week's numbers of 4000 are true.

I would expect that many people would have held off their purchase of a PS3 during the previous week. Either to get a slim instead or to wait and see if the price of the old PS3s would come down more.

Previous week? Most people have been waiting for it since week 1, so no surprise at all here.

Exactly. Who the hell is going to buy a older PS3 for more money the week before a newer model comes out?

And the people who don't know, like parents. People who have lives that don't involve hunting down every little bit of information of some console?

Oh, you mean people like the parents that most likely didn't know about a price slash either?

Old news? Slim knocked down the only reason people aren't buying it, and that is because is expensive. This is unsurprising.

From the specs, the PS3 is more superior than the xbox in every way, but the games have not shown this yet. There are a number of xbox games that look better than their PS3 counterparts.

In my opinion, PS3 exclusives tend to look a lot better than 360 exclusives. Older games had 360 as the lead SKU, which is why what you say used to be true, however, many of those shoddy PS3 ports still include higher res textures than their 360 counterparts. More recently, the PS3 has become the lead SKU on many cross-platform games, these show an advantage in the PS3 version without messing up the quality of the 360 version.

People have been waiting since 2006 for the price to hit something they can afford. I'm glad, good to see these new people take up Sony under their wings again.

Still waiting. Not touching it till it gets BC. They can say all they want that its not coming, we see that didnt work with them not cutting the price.

They probably removed the PS2 EE processor when making the PS3 Slim. If the PS2 hardware is gone, then BC is impossible.

Just shows how diabolically bad the PS3 sales were before if the % increase is so much.

Also if it's in such high demand, why are retailers already discounting it and there are so many bundles around ?

Nothing special here. New products always sell well the first week of release. The trick will be seeing if that sales majority is maintained in weeks 2,3,4, etc.
#7 Thom on 10 Sep 2009 - 15:06
I've been very tempted by this new version, a fair price and slimmer too!
#8 Darrian on 10 Sep 2009 - 15:16
It's no shock to me at all. I've been waiting for the slim version, myself, because having a console as big as my computer is just stupid. Also I like to wait to see if a console has any issues and wait for them to be fixed. Back in the SNES and Playstation/Saturn days it wasn't even an issue, I'd run out and buy a new system the moment it hit the shelves. These days they like to throw a console on the shelves before all the bugs are worked out. 360 RROD? Inexcusable. When I buy a console I expect it to still work in 20 years. I'll wait probably another 6 months on the "Slim" (it's still pretty big ) and grab one up when God of War III comes out.
