MW2 dedicated server petition suspect, server capped at 9v9

Speaking in an online chat with the Best Buy community, Infinity Ward's Mackey McCandlish and Ryan Lastimosa discussed the petition for dedicated servers in Modern Warfare 2 and also let slip that servers across all platforms will max out at eighteen players.

When asked if there will be dedicated servers added later, the developers had this to say:

"We feel the PC game is great in it's current form. We put a lot of work into IWnet in an effort to make the PC experience better for our users. We believe MW2 is better than CoD4:MW. The reason iw.net exists is to improve the gameplay for our users. If there is a need for something more in the future we will address as needed. Our goal is to provide the best experience for our users, so nothing is ever "off the table". We are always evaluating our options."

On the petition for dedicated servers:

"All I can say is that we changed it to make it a better and easier experience. Also, not all of the [178,000] names on that list are legit. 402 signed it 4 times I heard."

On the PC version. Are all games hosted by players, and is there a 5 second delay when host migration is in effect?

"Yes."
"Games cap out at 9v9. The software has great latency tolerance."

On LAN parties:

"We can play at work on our lan by doing private match and there is no lag."

Neowin recently reported that that the PC version of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 will not contain dedicated servers or mod tools unlike its predecessor, Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare.

What a joke! I don't understand how gamers are such easy spenders with their money, this game isn't cheap and it is so flawed.

Gamers should show their opinions with their wallet.

I wonder if Activision will blame piracy for this as well.
#1.1 Minimoose on 08 Nov 2009 - 08:50
Most probably don't know what a dedicated server is...

Ahhh well i feel sorry for the pc gamers, it's been 9vs9 on console for ages and one of the reasons i stopped buying the games, im pretty lucky as being in the MAG beta with 128vs128 makes every other online fps battle look empty, honestly it plays so well and lagless even for a BETA it's gonna be ace when it comes out next year, amazes me that activision is taking a step backwards. Ironic thing here is that EA of all people are looking good at this point with the next BFBC2 with biogger maps and dedicated servers.

I don't know if EA is still using slave labor, or if it continues to extort developers out of intellectual property and royalties, but when EA releases highly polished, nearly bug-free games like Dragon Age without excessively crippling it or screwing over PC gamers in favor of consoles you have to give them credit. Sometimes EA gets things right.
#3 Dannyarr on 05 Nov 2009 - 07:59
Idiots. But there will also be those who will buy the game anyway.

I'll stay with CoD4 until 1 of 2 things happens:

1.) They change their mind and introduce dedicated servers.
2.) BF BC2 comes out.

I'm betting on 2.

This is such a joke! Do they not know anything! They have been in this business for so many years now. Instead of improving on Modern warfare 1 they are going backwards to the first ever COD game! Why couldn't they leave what they had with MW and then just improve with added features not taking features away! They really have screwed this up and they should be ashamed of themselves!

I guess they'll lose the game to piracy then and online will only really be taken up by deadly loyal and console players.

I don't know if it will be a success on ANY platform with a limit of only 9 vs 9 multiplayer.

Why did they cripple the game this way, I don't get it. Did IW get new management or what? IW used to know what they were doing, it seems like someone else designed MW2.

Really, what is wrong with 9 on 9? OK so you want bigger games. But there is nothing wrong with 9 on 9 games.

9vs9 isnt really the problem, the problem is that no one can make a mod to change this limit, also the multiplayer is p2p, there are no modding tools, no lean and the list goes on...
#6 rpsgc on 05 Nov 2009 - 09:44
They are dumbing down the game and in the process make it more accessible to all the whining no skill noobs out there. Hurray!
#7 Morisato on 05 Nov 2009 - 09:54
I for one will be buying it. I'm not gonna let a little bit of this or that bother me from enjoying a game where I can be a terrorist and shoot innocent civs. Those complaining can stick with there COD4's and leave the would be IW alone. No one is forcing anyone to buy there games anyway. What I do dislike is that its actually a port from 360 and not the otherway around. So I'm expecting a new engine with probably emulated look like better graphics but probably won't be as great as one would want or probably the same in a way but different textures to go into the fray.
#8 Yinchie on 05 Nov 2009 - 14:34
Not buying MW2 because of no dedicated servers, why? Because I ALWAYS enjoy mass multiplayer such as 25vs25... it is what I enjoy, even in TF2.
#9 +littleneutrino on 05 Nov 2009 - 15:54
As far as my opinion goes their decisions mean nothing to me i will still get the game. even without dedicated servers im fine with it.

You guys left out the best part!

LaGgY_42o: What kinds of pings did you get during your IWNet testing and what do you say is an acceptable ping?
Mackey-IW: I've been playing mainly with around 100ms ping and it was great.
#10.1 Joshua Seed on 05 Nov 2009 - 17:22
Is a 100ms ping realistically playable?
#10.2 undu on 05 Nov 2009 - 18:35
This reminds me I've got to get a new PC to play Battlefield:Bad Company 2

If you're playing on a console with a controller and target assistance, sure!
#10.5 NeoTrunks on 06 Nov 2009 - 15:46
100ms? God, I feel old. Back in my day, 200-300 was good enough for me in Quake 1 and 2. And those netcodes sucked compared to what we have today.

(Take with a hint of sarcasm and nostalgia)
#10.6 Minimoose on 08 Nov 2009 - 08:55
Not buying it here, 100ms is ridiculous.
#10.7 Viper217 on 09 Nov 2009 - 04:11
also its not like he said 100 was the best or worst ping he had, 100 might be playable for some people (not me) but what about when you get a server with 150ms? Even console players start to notice it then. Without being able to choose the servers close to you with the best ping you will have to hope IWNet chooses well, and chooses well every single time.
#11 Amodin on 05 Nov 2009 - 17:07
I really want Modern Warfare 2, as I played COD4 a TON and still play it today. I'd like to see the storyline continued on, and it looked really good.

I am severely disappointed in the hosted server venue with the game. It won't stop me from purchasing the game, and I will still enjoy COD4 online.

What was the cap in MW1? I don't even know what the cap is in BC, I've been playing it for so long...
#12.1 Viper217 on 06 Nov 2009 - 22:03
cap in MW1 on PC was 64, console went to 32 I believe. BC1 went up to 24 online.

CoD always looked to me like some CS clone (nothing special imo), but...wow....this is really looking like major BS.
This game is going to suck so bad, even for console standards...well, welcome to the new cr*p-gaming era i guess...
#13.1 smooth_criminal1990 on 05 Nov 2009 - 22:58
crikey no...comparing CoD and CS is like...comparing butter with lard...similar shapes, just different!

And CoD is probably more of a simulator than CS I woulda thought.
#14 nbtc971 on 05 Nov 2009 - 21:12
To you guys who are still buying MW2, that is your right, however by doing so, you are encouraging these gaming studios to continue to screw the PC gamer. Why not get L4D2 in a couple of weeks and then wait for BFBC2 and send IW a message? If enough did that, then they would add the stuff back in in a patch and you could get the game then.
(1 reply) #15 jstillion on 05 Nov 2009 - 21:15
The Dev's want the change, it looks like a large amount of players don't want it, the dev's will "spin" it to try and appease and or blam the players.

If game sells enough, they were able to force the change down your throat (so to speak).

What's wrong with having "official" server's, and user dictated servers. Give the players a choice?
#15.1 Minimoose on 08 Nov 2009 - 08:59
It isn't official servers, they will just run the matchmaking system.
#16 BrainDedd on 05 Nov 2009 - 21:32
Well ... I for one swore to myself never to buy another Battlefield game after the bomb that was 2142.
Guess that leaves me with the Modern Warfare 2 single player campaign. Oh well.
And even if 402 people signed it four times ... that's still 176794 legit people complaining.

No! They leave us with no choice. Like I said, this is just to spite them. After this stunt I have no plans of playing this crap, but I will download it, will take screenshots and troll their forums. I will also look for aimbots and wallhacks, take screenshots and also troll their forums with that.
#17.3 NeoTrunks on 06 Nov 2009 - 15:48
So, instead of simply voting with your wallet, you're going to go out of your way to ruin it for players that did pay to enjoy it?

NeoTrunks said,

My interest is to show Activision that this is not acceptable. I really don't give a damn about others. If people are willing to bend and get it in their asses from Activision, that's not my problem, and I will certainly not help them "enjoy it".
#17.5 Minimoose on 08 Nov 2009 - 09:03
Activision need a way of seeing people's distaste about this decision, they have effectively discounted the petition because of '404 people voting 4 times', so that means that 1212 are repeats, that is still less than 1% of the signatures.
