Giveaway: HP MicroServer Gen8 and Managed Switch! [UPDATE WITH WINNER]

We've been teasing this for a couple of months, but the day is finally here: You now have a chance to win an HP ProLiant MicroServer Gen8 with the Pentium 2020T processor, 16G of RAM, a 500GB drive, and the PS1810-8G managed switch! With a retail value of over $1,000, this is a great prize and entering to win is easy!

For this giveaway, we're trying something a little different by implementing a Rafflecopter widget on this post. This should give us better tracking to know who's entering and make sure your entry doesn't somehow get lost in the shuffle. Be sure to follow the directions carefully, especially regarding Twitter.

  1. "Like" Neowin on Facebook. This one is self-explanatory.
  2. Follow @NeowinFeed on Twitter. Make sure you enter your Twitter username so we know who you are.
  3. Follow @Fezmid (me) on Twitter. Make sure you enter your Twitter username so we know who you are.
  4. Tweet about the giveaway. This one is a little confusing, but you have to select the option and then click the "Tweet" button that appears. That will bring up a string that needs to be tweeted (you should see, "@NeowinFeed is giving away an #HPMicroServer so check out Neowin.net and enter yourself! #giveaway" followed by a URL to this post). Tweet that, then follow the steps shown to get the link to your tweet for confirmation. Clicking the "how do I find it" link gives instructions.

The first three options give you two entries each (and can obviously only be done once), while the last option gives you one entry but can be done once per day.

We realize that many people don't like social media, but unfortunately the businesses we try to partner with look heavily at our social media presence. The more followers we have, the more attractive we are, and the more reviews and giveaways we can provide to our community. Don't hate the player, hate the game, but since that's the way it's played, that's what we have to do right now. We truly hope that everyone understands.

In addition to the Rafflecopter entries, you can also gain extra entries by commenting on our various HP MicroServer posts. Each comment on this thread, the review of the PS1810-8G switch, and the review of the MicroServer will also gain you one entry per day. Note that comments already made on those threads are free entries! Make your posts creative, explaining why you want each of the devices, what movie the design reminds you of, what spaceship would best be controlled by the device, or anything else creative that you can come up with!

a Rafflecopter giveaway

The contest runs until Tuesday, November 12th, at midnight Eastern time.

If you'd like another chance to win a MicroServer, visit our friends at 1CloudRoad to see how you can enter to win there as well!

Well you can't say that anymore!

Hope you get it! I never did get my team fortress 2 Trading cards from placing 3rd in the Dragon competition!

Like I said below, I'll gladly take your old one off your hands, lol! Anyway, congrats!

I understand and accept it all, except the part about needing to follow fezmid, what's that about - looks like some staffer just wants to boost his ego...?

Ah well, I take that as if I win you'll just draw another name but it's cool...

Hello,

Here goes my daily comment for this It would be nice to know the source of the winner (from Twitter, FB, etc) and HOW Neowin randomly choose him/her.

Yeah, what he said

I'd probably just set it up as a neowin file upload server or mirror. I've got a monster server in my house right now with about 32tb of raided space for my own uses.

I would want a Microserver to be able to finally have a low power server that I could keep on 24/7 to hold all of my media as I only have a 1tb in my desktop that is not backed up at all, The design reminds me of a epic looking gaming pc such as a corsair 550d. The DEATHSTAR would be easily controlled by this as it has 2 gigabit uplinks with expandability up to 8. I really could benefit from using this server and I would love to be able to have one, but money is tight anymore. Thanks again Neowin!

Cool. Thanks for letting me win this so I can upgrade my WS2012 Essentials to WS 2012 R2 Essentials

I was thinking about ordering a ReadyNAS 312 for streaming movies to my Roku, but this is so much better. Black Friday is coming, maybe one of these will be showing up

This looks interesting, I've been looking at small servers anyway so if I could win one that would be great

This would be great to migrate my MDM and 'Download' Servers over to in ESX, currently running on a HP N36L, this would allow some massive performance gains until final migration over to a full Gen8 Server in two years time. I hope I get it, but, heck, just happy to be part of the competition!

My current server is a HP Slimline desktop from 2006 with a Core Duo (not the Core 2 Duo) with WS2003 for a file server, but it's getting a bit old, and although I still have ~1.5 years left to buy a new server - since WS2003 support only expires in 2015 (it can't run Server 2008 R2 because it's only 32-bit) this seems like a pretty nice thing to win with those specs. Also that switch is a nice addon, since I can also upgrade my network to 1Gbit.

social media...... it should be called anti-social media

In to get this stellar unit and use it as my media and file server as well as lab unit for virtual machines.

Would make a nice media streaming server. Shame about the people with social networking accounts getting an advantage on entries though.

Here's my post

It's open until Monday night - and you can post here, in the switch review, in the server review, and send the tweet out once a day to get more entries.

I would really appreciate winning this as it would make my studying for my VCP certificate much easier! Thank you!

Love to see sites passing on the tech guidness! Would love to upgrade my development server to this equipment. Newer tech is always welcomed in my home. )

I've said it and i said again, this server would be really great as a demo showdown for my clients; put up a couple of VM's with a fully working AD, Exchange, SQL, Sharepoint, FS, Firewall, NAS and some apps and it's a semi-portable server for demo showing how a network can be and the versatility it can bring to SOHO/ Small Business with a few hundreds of € to spend.
It's not only useful for labs or media centers; this has potential to really gain new costumers for me (and i would be willing to build said network for you guys to see as well).

Better buy the write-back caching module (676473-B21) or a few SSDs if you're going to run that much on it. Sharepoint can be really I/O hungry even in a demo environment. Write caching helps a ton if you're going to demo Hyper-V replica too, and that is definitely something worth showing off.

yes, i'm considering SSD instead of BBWC (battery backed write cache); improved write cache and more storage instead of 256MB or 512MB (i've seen servers with 1GB, insanely costlier than SSD). Of course it doesn't have a battery, but then again the write is very fast and it doesn't have the aggravated cost of replacing the battery every 3/4 years.

Might be a bit overkill for what I would use it for, but who am I to argue with overkill.

Like at least two other people before me, I'm also unclear as to what you mean by "Make sure you enter your Twitter username". Enter it where?

Great server and would be a welcomed addition to my home network. I especially love the managed switch with the option to trunk 2 ethernet pipes from the server to increase throughput to and from the server!

Yeah I can see this being a huge benefit to our customers. Who really needs to spend $5000 on a server for a small business?

Entered! Probably one of the best giveaways to actually enter. One that would be useful to me as a test server so I can play around with VMs, make & break OSs and generally improve my IT knowledge!

I guess you can never have too many servers.

I can't say I'd have much use for a managed switch but it might still come handy to try NNMi stuff at home.

Anyhow, I would like to upgrade my home network to gigabit and definitely would like the server to use for backups and share media.

edit: oh I figured it out. doh, needed some coffee this morning

What do you mean by "Make sure you enter your Twitter username so we know who you are" ? Where do we enter it ?

Well the HP microserver and switch would be fun to test and see how it compares to my own home rolled unit!

this kinda sucks. what happened to just posting a comment here about why you want it or what you would do once you get it? well hopefully I can win it.

I don't mind having to do all the re-tweeting and such. It's well worth the effort for what what they are giving away.. If you have to do it, do it right. They are.. Got to give them props for that. Thanks for the chance to NeoWin..

Oh, I just saw (very hidden though) that you enter by commenting here

Errr...your twitter name is not private by any means. Just by having that as your real name, you're telling the whole world.

I cannot be searched, my tweets cannot be searched, etc. My privacy settings are set to max.

Odd, your 'teasing' link takes me to your article that links to HP's website that is listing it for $449.00, less than half of what you say this goes for on retail. Maybe I am missing something. Either way, looks fun!

There's different specifications, the $449 model is a lot less powerful than this one. The Switch is worth a fair bit as well.

The $449 is for a Celeron processor, no hard drive, and 2G of RAM. This one has a Pentium 2020T processor, a 500G drive, 16G of RAM, and includes a managed switch as well.

Ah ok, thanks for the clarification.

Likes, tweets and multiple entries per day? really, I miss the days where you got one entry and random chance let you win, not who could spam forum posts and tweet the most... Not entered.

Nothing is free.. the days of giving away for fun and loyalty are over, it's all about sucking likes and follows out of the internet. it also makes competitions so much harder to win because the more exposure it gets the more people enter. Blame social media.

By posting here, you entered -- but if you win, I'll draw another winner instead if you prefer.

That said, I know there are a lot of people that feel the way you do -- which is why I tried explaining why we have to do it this way. Without social media, the site would eventually disappear as companies don't want to deal with sites that aren't strong in social.

Kind of lame I need to have a Facebook or Twitter account. I understand the reasoning behind it. It's just a shame I can't enter.

You actually don't have to have a FB/Twitter account -- you entered just by posting in this thread. You just get more entries by using FB/Twitter.

I reread it now and wow its hidden!

I'm trying to get the terms and conditions link to load but it won't. Just keeps taking me back to the rafflecopter page.. and that's just stuck on 'Loading... '.

This is like the "no purchase necessary" option. Buried under piles of fineprint, but at least it's there. Sometimes I really don't want the large fries, but still want to play :-)
