Google confirms new Chrome logo to be rolled out

Almost two weeks ago, discussions arose in the Neowin forums as to whether Google was planning to change their Google Chrome logo to a more simplistic design.

Well, today it has been announced that indeed they are now going to start pushing the new design and those who have been using the developer builds of Chrome or Chromium should have started to see it pop up. The design overall looks cleaner and seems to follow the Chrome idea of making things simple.

In the statement, posted on Google’s Chrome blog, the general consensus by Google was that a redesign was needed to show the true meaning behind Chrome, in which the new logo “embodies the Chrome spirit — to make the web quicker, lighter, and easier for all.”

There have been several hints that the old logo would soon reach its end, with Google posting numerous advertisement pieces that display a more modern, simplistic logo. Such examples can be seen in the Chrome speed test video and an art piece posted by Mike Lemanski to celebrate Chrome's second birthday.

Although simplistic, the icon redesign was a ‘group effort’ in which they tried many variations and ‘several different contexts’ while keeping other types of media in view, such as print and web.

The real rollout for the logo will come soon with the new beta and stable builds that are said to arrive within the next few weeks.

none is better, the new one is different and thats what i like about it, they should change the icon and the UI every 2 years

I don't like it either, and prefer the pokéball look. But, give it time, and I'll have forgotten what the old logo looked like, and I won't even care.

I think they should have at least given it a bit of perspective, leaning back slightly like the original logo.

Love it...simple and clean

This is why I use their browser too.....
Having used both IE9 and FF4 now...I won't be swapping back to FF

Been using Chrome since it was released and still think its the best on the market

I'm not resistant to change, but I don't like change for the sake of change. I see no reason why it needed to switch. It is now a simplier, boring design, how does that make me want to use Chrome more? The previous icon was exciting, had a lot going on, it said something was happening here.
In the long run it doesn't matter, but apparently they had nothing else to work on so figured they would change the logo.

I wonder if this is to distance slightly from the Mozilla Firefox style logo - the glossy finish between them was kinda similar, no? (Before you grill me I haven't read any of your comments so I'm not sure if I repeat others' views).

It saddens me to live in a World where marketing people can spend (I assume) $K's on a new logo, and then pat each other on the back for a job well done, whilst talking about paradigm shifting, corporate brand image, leverage, spirit, lighter, easier, blah. blah. blah.

I once sat in on a meeting at my previous company where the web people talked for 30mins about the exact shade of blue they should use, and what the implied meanings were behind each.

Come back Bill Hicks. You were right about people in advertising/marketing. I miss you.

ps: Maybe it's because I'm on the 'unstable' (which isn't) build of Chrome, but, I've had this logo for close to a week now.

Yea, it popped up for me last week too. Running Chrome 11 dev.

Overall Google has to be the company with the worst interface design ever. This is no exception. It's like everything has to be done at an extremely rapid pace with no attention to detail.

Funny - I think this more minimalist icon seem to have more thought behind it than a 3D ball. Minimalism doesn't necessarily imply sloppiness.

"Although simplistic, the icon redesign was a ‘group effort'..."

Ah, yes. The wonderful process also known as "Design by Committee".

The new icon, shown to the left, looks almost OK on this page but you can see the white ring is not perfect. In Win 7 taskbar, it looks awful!! The red top ring is all jagged and the white ring in the circle has a lot of color bleeding in to it. It's easily the worst looking icon on my taskbar.
I wonder if the Chrome developers/testers don't test on Win 7 with high resolution monitors???

Or low resolution monitors, for that matter. The bigger the pixel, the easier to see!

Ah, looks like they followed the IE8 to IE9's icon change. Not bad.

+1 . looks great besides ie9 icon. firefox stands out for being too 3D ish now

Not a fan of either to be honest, but personally I do think the second one looks a bit more stylish, a good logo really doesn't need a ton of flash to make it look good. Still makes me think of Ubuntu:Simon Edition though.

It's Metro UI Chrome

My First thought on that, i think google wants to look a much like windows so people would try to confuse it for the same brand and get people believing that their chrome OS is the same OS.

In other news... Firefox redesigns their logo too. [I wish]

Firefox actually has one of the most beautiful logo. It's the fox helping you exploring the web, it's the fox embracing the whole web.

Old chrome logo was just a pokeball with the colors taken from windows logo. The new one is just a mixture of colors, so plain and meaningless.

Me too. I think it's ugly compared to the old logo.

Agreed. I think they need to go back to the drawing board.

the new logo doesnt help me like chrome any more or less.. bad GUI, bad logo, really bloated and not faster than firefox or ie. most over hyped browser.

I think you have mistaken chrome for firefox
I mean really chrome being more bloated than firefox?

new logo is crap old one is better it's also simple but not (I can't afford anything better simple like the one on the right)

Sorry man, but your comment before wouldn't back that up. Chrome is clearly not bloated ... and the GUI is stunningly simple to use. I can assure you, after sending the link to some of my friends, technical and very un-technical, 90% of them haven't gone back to their old browser (IE or Fx). You did sound a little silly when you said what you said is all

i agree about the Bad UI but bloated nahh, its missing a lot of features

Bloated, haha. The complaint use to be that it's too lean.

I may be in the minority, but I think it looks far, far better. I love the simplicity of it. I prefer the colors of Chromium, though.

Yeah I agree with that
+1 go chrome!

It might not be the best logo, but I like it a lot more than the old one..

I also like it. It works much better as an application icon now, including in the smaller sizes like 16x16. I have a feeling that's why they changed it too. It looks more mature and less like a pet project with the cheap harsh glossy 3D effects.

Yup, exactly. I hate when designers try go overkill with 3D effects, glossy, drop shadow, etc.

I'm not feellin it! Maybe if it wasn't so one-dimensional I'd like it more but theres no depth. Its just too simple for me!

I agree. At first glance I was turned off, but much like IE9's new logo, it is growing on me.

Google makes no bones about wanting to kill Windows.

I guess you're right. It's just a coincidence.

I kinda felt the old icon looked like one of GLaDOS' cores.

On the other had it kinda feels odd that the red between the green third and the red third is a bit darker. The green and the yellow tips are far less vizible.

I like it. Change is difficult for some people, it'll grow on you... One thing is for sure, and that's that I'm sick of the old logo, any difference from the old seems like progress to me.

Concerning what? Colors? These four elementary colors were the part of the entire Google brand (and all it's products) since the beginning.

You refereed to both logos as "this one". Its really confusing. The old logo was boring? Really? The new one is completely bland and dull.

I couldn't agree more... they must have had somebody working on work experience and asked them to design a new logo for them.
