Google launches Mail Goggles

Remember that time when you sent an email to an ex when you were drunk? Perhaps an email to that cute girl in the office that you've always wanted to speak to or perhaps a rant at your boss under the influence of beer?

Google to the rescue! Google has announced "mail goggles". When you enable Mail Goggles, it will check that you're really sure you want to send that late night Friday email. And what better way to check than by making you solve a few simple math problems after you click send to verify you're in the right state of mind?

Google's idea is to prevent those embarrassing mishaps on a Friday evening after a few alcoholic beverages. Perhaps phone manufacturers could implement this too as I regularly need electronic restraint on a Friday evening from txting the wrong person at the wrong time.

Thank you macrosslover. That comment honistly made me laugh :D

Google is like a best friend, there to stop you embarrassing yourself after a night out. Just wish they could also stop you throwing up over the keyboard and having to clean up last nights kebab off the walls.

Jesus christ, the amount of posts here taking this seriously...

It's a bit of a laugh, bloody hell, i'm going to take a wild stab in the dark, drop my bait in the water, and guess 70%+ of those serious replies were American.

the internet = google mail
teh internets = mail googles??
oh wait i misread it, its actually a G , not an O ... nevermind

Because alcohol + Internet = a good idea...?

Oh well, I guess it helps those poor ******* that can't restrain themselves and/or get over their ex's.

i don't understand how people b!tch about this if is optional, is not like they put a gun in your head to use it.

Damn that is actually pretty funny of a tool. I can see its use. I can also see the drunk people just disabling it. But hey its always good to try right?? As for facebook, yes i really agree to add that, maybe even to your phone for text messages? haha

they need this for facebook. most of the time after a night of partying when i get up and check for messages / wall posts i have to frantically delete drunken posts ive made on other people, as well as embarrasing status changes.

Sometimes I send messages I shouldn't send. Like the time I told that girl I had a crush on her over text message. Or the time I sent that late night email to my ex-girlfriend that we should get back together.

LOL.

I did something like this to my Ex last year, we broke up almost 19 years ago.

anyhow I used facebook, (how I found her), I was under the influence of alcohol, solving a math problem while intoxicated is not much of a problem for me unless, im really drunk and then I wouldn't be near a computer.
So this Goggles is pretty useless.

I'm pretty sure I can do basic maths just as well when im drunk as when im sober. Unless I'm really off my rocker to the point where just using the computer to begin with would be an effort. Then I doubt I would be sending any emails.

Though I like that they are thinking about this kind of stuff. What I need is texting control. Man, some texts I have sent while undeer the influence that I wish I could take back x)

Vista programmers could have used this before compiling :P

sure you could but i guess its more like

"aaw im drunk... i so want my girlfriend back, now that im drunk... alright, so ill write an email..."

*write*
*write crap*
*write more*

"alright... send... huh? maths? aw you know what, **** it. ill head to bed..."

;)

I LOVE google. They have a great sence of humor. Even if this isn't a joke.

I would love to have this setup on my account after 10pm on Friday / Saturday nights.

What a kiss up.

Apple/MS/Unix/etc company that you don't like does this and you would have been all over them.

This is a great idea!

I make sure I stay away from the computer when drunk, I don't want to break it. "don't drink and shell script" I say.

Man this would have saved me the other night when coming back to the hotel after hitting the clubs, wired and not ready to sleep and sending stupid emails. Now if we can get voice mail masks. Hahahaha!!

oh man comon, folks... this is an OPTION... you dont HAVE to use it.

if you dont want it - dont activate it. fullstop...

yea, its kinda useless... yea, it is funny and looks like an april fools joke...

but hell its there, you dont have to use it, go on.

=)

And so begins the long, slow slide of google into pointless noodling... or course this will be in BETA for ages as well.

Totally useless. I can solve third grade math problems when I'm drunk.
And I can't remember when I ever set in front of the computer when I was totally wasted... or why would I do such thing anyway

...I can't remember when I ever set in front of the computer when I was totally wasted...

Because you were totally wasted? Who knows what you did then that hasn't come back to haunt you yet.

...I can't remember when I ever set in front of the computer when I was totally wasted...
For all you know while drunk you may have the ability to solve polynomial equations to an order of 20 and just have forgotten once sobered up which would render this useless.

How about you just not send emails while drunk. Or, *gasp*, use your brain?

lol no chance of that some one using there brain. ooohhh the shock and horror of it :P

Utterly brilliant! I have been wanting this for so many years now! Fantastic! Bordering on genius in fact! Oh, my mistake, I was thinking of something that wasn't this pointless.

How utterly pointless. I know a few people that couldn't solve those simple maths problems at the best of times, and I'm sure there are more than a few maths geniuses who could solve them when off their heads without a second thought.

Plus, what is stopping you using a calculator to solve the problems? Or what if you are using a mail client like Outlook/Firebird etc?

Pointless.

Nothing is stopping you from using a calculator. The point is to slow you down and in particular stop you sending an email if your drunk. I'm sure if your sober enough to go get a calculator and use it for the 5 problems then you probably could have done the math on your fingers anyway.

Sober enough to go get a calculator? As opposed to using the one built into your operating system?

If you're drunk enough that sending a naughty email to your ex seems like a good idea, then this won't stop you. It'd be more effective to just pop up a large warning screen, that you have to confirm. Make it so the OK button is 'randomly' placed, with slight variations in text so you actually have to comprehend it to send the email.

This is just a stupid waste of time.

Great addition to Gmail. Although I wish facebook had this option. Would save me from posting embarrassing walls  !!!

I know I thought it was an April fools joke when I saw it and then realised it wasn't April :)

Hey kids, here is another reason for you to stupid maths.
