Google's 9th Birthday

Two weeks ago, AFP informed us that "Google, at age 10, is the official heart of the Internet. Born 10 years ago, the Google Internet search engine has grown into the electronic center of human knowledge by indexing billions of web pages as well as images, books and videos." That's true, except that Google is 9 years old. Even if Larry Page and Sergey Brin registered the google.com domain in 1997, Google was officially launched one year later.

"Google opened its doors in September 1998. The exact date when we celebrate our birthday has moved around over the years, depending on when people feel like having cake," says Google's help center. You can read more about it directly from Google. In the recent years, Google's birthday has been celebrated on September 27th with a doodle displayed on the homepage. Happy birthday, Google!

Gotta admit that line amused me. :P

"Google, at age 10, is the official heart of the Internet...

That line disgusted me
Too much power on a single company that can only do one thing right... "search the web", and lately, is not dong that good of a job.

Could you elaborate?

lol, you're talking about a search engine that searches Microsoft's site better than... Microsoft itself! :P

That is funny, sad, but unfortunately true. I use Google to search MSDN.

Well, calling a company the "heart of the internet" has some deep implications. It gives them too much control and power.
It is almost on a weekly basis that you can see things like this. Google is expanding at an exponential rate and becoming the true center of the Internet.

I'm no paranoid but... it just gives me chills to try to imagine where is Google going; what does Google want (besides money, of course).

I know what it feels like to depend on Google. I'm a software developer and I sell my products online -- for the past 4 years 99.99% of all customers come from Google. They used to come from software-listing web sites.
If I don't advertise with Google I don't sell -- competitors with more money simply crush me with their ads and their ability to "manipulate" Google's PR.
Do you really believe that the first 10 results returned by any search are actually the "best" results that Google could come up with? No, they are not. But I guess that's another story although shows how Google can manipulate the direction of potential buyers and web users in general. Imagine Google incorporating into other businesses? Will they do the same?

hmmm.... guess you get the point; I'm just a bit worried, that's all.

LoL they are successful to make you a comment like that. they are not but they want to be. Monopoly cases we may see in future against google. Such as their privacy lacking issues which has been proven a while ago why collecting all information from users and store them??
