Gran Turismo 5 still "about 90%" done

Gran Turismo 5, perhaps one of the most hotly anticipated PlayStation 3 titles since its announcement at Sony's E3 conference back in 2006, is still "about 90%" done, according to Polyphony Digital boss Kazunori Yamauchi.

Speaking to Inside Line in an exclusive interview, Yamauchi said, "About 90 per cent of the game is done. We are just working on the last 10 per cent and polishing up everything. There are currently around 140 people working on the project."

The developer added that Gran Turismo will not be released until it has "satisfied everyone's wishes and then exceeded them."

As reported by Eurogamer, Yamauchi previously stated that the game was "about 90%" done at January's Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, indicating that the game is no closer to completion than it was five months ago, or that at the very least some late features may be being added.

Sony previously announced a March release for the game in Japan, but delayed it again in January. According to information on the PlayStation blog from Episode 4 of online magazine FirstPlay, the game is currently slated for a "Winter 2010" release.

So much time and trouble has gone into this...

I sure hope that they are not working only on improving the graphics and try to make it a REAL driving simulator as they claim cause handling and car behavior until now has been unrealistic and absolutely rubbish in these games.

If this game is anything less than perfection in every respect it should be considered a failure; there really is no excuse.

I blame Sony for giving Yamauchi too much free reign. They've lost control of arguably their greatest game, and that's a real shame. We should have been playing this game a year ago, and be looking forward to regular updates and extra features. Prologue was a good start, but the momentum has been lost and now I, and a lot of other people, simply don't care any more.

I heard somewhere that they project to be at 91% this time next year which was very encouraging to me. I am going to put my PS3 in a big ziplock bag in hopes of preserving it for my 3 year old son's first born to use when GT5 comes out.

seems to me like this game is the Alan Wake of the PS3.

Good luck, I hope your game is better than mine, if and when you ever get to play it.

They can keep working on that game forever - someone should grow some balls and say; just release the damn game already!

June 2009: "Polyphony Digital's Kazunori Yamauchi has admitted that Gran Turismo 5 is “at a point we can release it any time we want.""
May 2010: "[Is] about 90%" done, according to Polyphony Digital boss Kazunori Yamauchi."
Heh?

I blame Sony for that, if they didn't push for 3D it probably would be out now. I can't prove it but I'm 90% sure it's the 3D that slowing things down.

6 years in the making and what kinda of market are they looking at? Either this game will have some kind of kiddish arcade mode or sales will be a disappointment for sony...

Considering the fact that it has taken them too long to release the game people have lost interest and when they do announce the date and release it no one will care to buy since they lost the majority of buyers due to the long wait, and sales won't be as expected that's unless if they run a major major ad campaign to show the game and it's going to have to be longer than a 30 second commercial too to attract back attention.

Has this still not come not come out yet? There was lots of hype last year I assume it came out slightly after Forza 3. I only like arcade racers anyway... Blur is really fun

Lost some serious interest in this title now. It's just getting rediculous. BTW, many of the 4 million GT5ps sold were included in PS3 bundles as well.

It really will be interesting to see just how well this compares to Forza 3, especially since Turn 10 have put out Forza 1, 2 and 3 during GT5's development. If it doesn't totally blow it away in every respect, they have wasted a lot of time and money.

Are they planning to make profits with this game? With the huge development time and probably very large development team along with the expensive technology they surely are using for development, this game has an enormous bill to pay.

I mean, this is getting to the point that it does not make sense at all, even if they intend to make money off the game by add-ons of cars and tracks for years.

It has cost 60 million to make (US dollars). GT5 Prologue has sold about 4.5 million copies at $30-40 a pop, main GT games have sold 8-14 million, you do the maths.

I wonder if Forza 3 gave them something more to think about feature wise. GT5 might have all the cars but Forza has really pushed it in other areas were perhaps GT is falling behind and now with decent competition they are taking their time and putting more features in.

Never liked the GT games anyway. But I keep reading about GT5, every few months and it never seems to be any closer. Vapourware, much? (I know that doesn't make sense, but you get what I am trying to say)

Gran Turismo was THE game for PS2 and THE driving game on any console known to man. Since then others have imitated and maybe improved in certain areas (my current favourite is still Burnout, yeah I know, how sad!) but there's still a lack of that driving feeling from GT. I hope this game is going to live up to the hype and anticipation! Oh and I hope I have a PS3 by the time it comes out. My plan to save up £1 per month since the initial news of its release was launched in 2006 is starting to look good.

Way too long development on GT5. It's been 6 years since GT4. I mean they released Prologue in 2008. That was basically a demo. Sure they have content to add but surly the underlying engine etc is pretty much complete if you can release demos?
Seems to me that they want this to be a great driving experience. During its development Sony come up with some new technology like 3D and they think... humm we could add that to the game.
Release the game already. If you really want to add more features, do it with patches like every other game.

I hear this is aiming to be a PS4 release now; only the revolutionary power of the next gen console can harness GT5's true potential.

Anywho, I'm looking forward for F1 2010 on PC I need a decent simulation, rFactor and GTR Evo are starting to slowly bore me.

I hear forza 4 is around the corner.... they need to release this and give me my fix of GT!
That was a rumor. Considering Turn 10 is now in charge of PGR, I wouldn't expect a new Forza till at least the next Xbox (which is only a few years away though).

I have to admit the wait for GT5 is getting quite ridiculous, they just keep adding stuff and it keeps pushing it back! it wasn't going to have damage but massive amount of NA fans lobby Polyphony and they listened and added it (delaying the game), now Sony pushing for 3D and that is pushing it back as well...plus there are only about 150 people working on the game. If we are lucky it might get here in time for Christmas but I wouldn't hold your breath.

Well that's disappointing, i was hoping for it to come out by sometime this summer, i guess that's not going to happen.

Journalists keep asking when it'll be out, this is the answer they'll get until Sony/PD are ready to announce.

I'll enjoy reading back on all the whining after E3

I keep hearing snippets of information on GT5, then a whole lot of nothing. Basically, I'll believe it when I see it.

That's my point... if it bombs, can you imagine the next time they announce a 'new' version.. Just wack on their part.

Yeah same here, I actuallly forget this was never even released for the PS3. By the time they release it theres going to be bunch newer cars out that won't even be included in the game.

I sadly feel the same way. At this point I need another Metal Gear Solid title to keep me loyal to my PS3. Well the fact that I can play online for free unlike Xbox 360 games is keeping me as well. To be honest, I only bought my 360 for Halo 3. So I guess I'll stick with my PS3 whether this comes out or not. It just would have been nice to have it when excitement and anticipation were high for it.
