Gruber on iOS 7: "All the leaks are wrong"

Speaking on this week's episode of his The Talk Show podcast, John Gruber (Daring Fireball), who is known to have many deep ties with Apple, has shared all he knows about what Apple has planned for WWDC 2013 tomorrow.

Gruber outlines in the podcast that he knows "almost absolutely nothing" about Apple's plans for iOS 7, but does note that a source tells him "all the leaks are wrong". In the past few months we've heard Jony Ive has taken the helm of software design at Apple, and that the next iteration of the firm's mobile OS will include a cleaner, flatter design.

I know almost absolutely nothing. I don't think I've been this ignorant of what's coming, software-wise, for a keynote since the iPhone 1 back in 2007. Which is great, I'm super excited about [iOS 7].

The one thing I keep hearing over and over again from friends who would know is; the one world I keep hearing is that some of the stuff they're going to show is "polarising".

And I also heard from somebody that just "all the leaks are wrong." Which is interesting. I have no idea what to make of it.

WWDC 2013 kicks off at 10:00 AM PDT (13:00 PM EDT, 18:00 PM GMT). Neowin will be offering coverage of all major announcements from Apple's annual developers conference.

Im not saying i love the design, but im interested by all you pidgeons all mindlessly going in together for the cheap attack on a completely valid idea. All options need to be considered. Also if you think MS is going to continue on the metro/modern path then maybe you should look at the new facebook beta app on WP8. If that's metro/modern then im very confused and unable to understand Microsofts previous briefs on what Modern is. I would like to see them stick to Modern and keep on evolving it, but with an accelerating exodus to the walled in garden called Apple MS has to question itself.

This raises suspicion that ios 7 won't come with a metro like UI but it will look flatter. Why would Apple ever want to create a metro style UI for a iPhone? It's not likely to happen in my view.

Nobody ever said iOS 7 would feature Modern-UI design language aesthetics in the UI. They said it would be flatter from the beginning, maybe you are confusing yourself when commenters say oh it'll look Metro then. Because there has been no leaks saying that. It might resemble the Modern-UI only because it will be a flat UI.

Wait what neowin is going to cover an event not run by Microsoft ? Is this allowed on this site ? Every non Microsoft topic or comment is up for ban on this site I'm confused

I'm only joking but this will not go over good with 90% of neowin member the second you post updates from WWDC the topic will be full of Angry apple trolls .

I'm a Windows Phone and Android user, in that order. While Apple seriously needs some refreshing features and a better phone this time, I don't think they will announce a major overhaul of iSO. Perhaps some subtle changes to "modernize it" and bring it up on par with WP and Android new features.

I could be wrong, and most definitively will be, but I can't think of a major makeover or start-from-scratch since the last iOS version. They would need to put out an incremental update and then the next release can be the really new version.

That or it will be the same incremental update iOS have been getting and people will still buy the new phone.

If OSX dropped the stupid and hiddeous menu bar at the top, made the close button actually close windows and not just do what the minimize button does, and most importantly get rid of the smug mindless followers I might be happy with the dock they have.

It will have polarization based 3D screen. Also every user will have personal polarized glasses with unique polarization patterns so DRM can restrict content to only this user.

and it will be claimed that it is totally revolutionary and Apple always leads in innovation. People really need to just try before they buy like the used to.

I agree. After Snow Leopard, I've been continually disheartened by the direction Apple has been going with OS X.

Why exactly? The term borrowed is over used, the real term is integrated.. I'm yet to come across something in OSX where it's blatantly obvious it's been 'borrowed' from iOS and doesn't work.. all i see is integration between apps from iOS.. reminders, notes, imessages are all amazing apps 'IF' you use them on your iphone, if you don't then ignore them on OSX, they aren't on the way.. Notification centre, i love it.. quick tweets/fb posts and a list of notifications, again.. can easily be ignored if you don't like it. Launchpad is probably the most obviously 'borrowed' design element, i personally dont use it but it doesn't bother me in a anyway.. so what exactly annoys you so much with what they have borrowed?

Where's the news in this? A guy saying he knows nothing about what is coming in iOS7..

Seriously ppl, I know you're dying to get news out on this, but so far there is no news really. And frankly I have a feeling there wont'be much news tomorrow either. I somehow expect this to be the lamest and dullest event Apple has held in a while. There will be a lot of talk, but nothing substantial or announced with a release date.

If you are correct then it will be a bad/sad day for Apple. People expecting something out of this, something new and exciting. It will **** off a lot of people i imagine.

Could have predicted this comment would appear somewhere. The news is that his source says "all the leaks are wrong" - going against anything we already know about the release. Gruber is incredibly well connected and anything he says, goes. Usually.

So are you trying to say that iOS 7's expected flatter and cleaner UI is just a bunch of bull**** because Gruber wasn't made aware of that? Because that in itself was rumor/speculation which is somewhat of a leak.

Alongside a new Windows 8 Edition of the iMac with touch screen.

People get all kinds of ideas in their head and when Apple doesn't live up to them, they're disappointed and Apple has let them down.

yet every year lots of stupid "leaks" from bad sources spread all over the internet.

Does not surprise me if apple just releases some snippets to have some free PR.

This has long been a view of mine. In the run up to any event/announcement, rumour sites give Apple a wave of free advertising.

So whilst they are "doubling down on secrecy" I think they are more doubling down on how selectively they leak internal operations.

This is one of the reasons I've always admired Apple as a company. They have a way of generating people's imagination beyond anything we've seen from anybody else. WWDC is the tip of this iceberg. They put one page up allowing a very limited number of tickets to be bought (for an excruciatingly high fee), and look at how much buzz it creates.

It's possibly one of the biggest advertising campaigns of the year - and it doesn't cost Apple a penny (I wouldn't be surprised if they made a profit from WWDC). No matter what you think of Apple - that is damn impressive.

And then people get things like the iPhone 4S and 5, which is just more of the same.

More of the same. I don't get it. 5 was my first iphone moving from android market. Simple and easy. And it fits in my pocket. I prob would of got a SamGal if they were pocketable.

Sorry, I don't know how much more obvious I could be.
