Halo 3 Reaches $170 Million In First Day Sales

Microsoft has announced that its Halo 3 has sold an estimated $170 million in its first day, making it "the biggest entertainment launch in history," noting that it has now beat out opening day theatrical releases of Spider-Man 3 and novels like Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. The sales are generally in line with analyst expectations, with Lazard analyst Colin Sebastian estimating sales would quickly reach $200 million. Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter stated that he anticipates that the title will be September's top release, expecting sales of over 3 million units in its first 12 days.

The game took more than 1.7 million copies in preorder sales, Microsoft says, surpassing the previous record-setting pre-orders for Halo 2. The release has garnered praise from retailers as well, with GameStop merchandising VP Bob McKenzie saying in Microsoft's release that the title is expected to be "the biggest video game title generator in GameStop's history." Again labeling the release a "pop-culture phenomenon," Microsoft Game Studios VP Shane Kim said, "Not only is Halo 3 setting sales records, it's also redefining entertainment. Within the first 20 hours alone, we've seen more than a million Xbox LIVE members come online to play Halo 3 – that makes September 25 the most active Xbox LIVE gaming day in history."

I can see how they did that. I mean i even went out and got a 360 elite and halo 3 when it came out so i can easily see how they made soo much. I wonder what it comes too with the increase of 360 hardware around the release date.

Yeah, I don't understand the hype too much either. I've played it, and I like single-player better than anything. But it's nothing I haven't played before. Nothing truly unique about it. /shrug

The first 20 minutes of the game, I thought: Well, is this really it? But as I have played along, it really grows and Im really impressed by the game. Its not unique, as I felt running through Bioshock, but it really is entertaining and an excellent shooter game. Besides, it does look sweet in 1080p on my Samsung

I don't understand why people like this game so much. I think it has something to do with peer pressure. Like if you dare to say that Halo sucks, you'll be beaten up in school.

toad,do you have envy or what ? huh?

It's a fact

Envy of what? I don't care how much it sells, I think it's over-hyped as a game. Things like "pop-culture phenomenon" written in the press about it is ridiculous. It's a shallow, simple game, without any particularly original gameplay ideas. How is it such a phenomenon when other console games, and a few PC games, routinely sell millions of copies? Bioshock sold 1.5m copies without any multiplayer, is that a "cultural phenomenon"?

does anyone know the development & advertising amount Microsoft spent on Halo 3?

Development was about $60m. Advertising was $30m, supposedly.

Although I can't stand it, it can't be such a bad game if 4.5 million games have been sold (up-to-date), and there are 600,000 players online on it now

As impressive as the figures are, most of them will have come from the massive amount of preorders for the game.
While that's not a bad thing, as such, it does remain to be seen how well the sales keep up.

thats quite impressive figures there money wise ;)

to bad the game is overrated though. lol... to me it's just another shooter for the most part.

170 millions in the launch day? that's pretty awesome.
Looks like what was said about the sales volume of this release is going to be right

Microsoft has announced that its Halo 3 has sold an estimated $170 million in its first day...

Wow, who knew you could sell money?! :P

insane! glad to see the xbox360 is doing well with this release.

the first profitable quarter for microsoft gaming division since xbox1 released.
it beat spiderman 3, and harry potter
it really put xbox360 on the map, and this was all just 1 single day!

now i really hope this and other fine releases keeps the market for 360 up!

that's definitely sweet. I was gonna be one of them (also buying an Elite) but i'm holding off just a bit (don't know why). I want to play the darn thing and i miss my Xbox (Gears of War too) and i have the freaking cash. Damnit, reading this just makes me wanna go grab on tomorrow or this weekend!!!

That is certainly impressive. Wow. Now I just hope they update the game eventually to allow for sound options and different choices for split-screen view.
