Have a Hotmail or Live email address? Changes are inbound

With the launch of Outlook.com today, you should be aware of a few changes that will be coming down the pipe if you currently use another Microsoft email service such as Live or Hotmail.

The good news is that your domain is not going anywhere, but Microsoft believes that the Outlook interface is the best on the web and it will eventually be rolling out to all of its other email platforms; this includes any domain that is currently using the Hotmail experience today.

If you like your current layout and do not care for the new Metro design, then you may be out of luck as Microsoft is going to be implementing the UI across all of its properties. The date when this rollout will occur has yet to be announced but know that it is planned for the future.

Metro is Microsoft's future, so the news should not come as a surprise as Microsoft works diligently to implement the UI across all of the company's properties. The company's goal is to have all of its products embrace the Metro design language, so it's only a matter of time before Microsoft is all Metro.

I also upgraded to @outlook.com but then when I sign on Live Messenger none of my contacts showed up as "online". Is there a fix to that?

I don't know what you do with mails from @windows.com @firefox.com @thunderbird.com @internetexplorer.com @office.com ,... but I know what I do with this mails.

There's no denying the new Outlook.com webmail is pretty dang good. Light years ahead of the Windows 8 Mail App at the moment, lol.

It's alright, but looks a bit dull in colour. I prefer the hotmail orange myself.

Strangely when I click on a folder, it seems to snap the view to the bottom or middle of the messages, so I have to scroll up to see the most recent.

I'll stick with livemail desktop for now.

I'm torn. I like the new messenger change but I miss the old titlebar images vs the plain colors - no quick links to the rest of your Live profile now either. Still not jazzed on all the whitespacing either.

FAIL.

Lastpass generated 16char password ftw.

Not good to rename your account if you're a WP7 user, you'll have to erase your phone and set it up again in order to get it working.

You can't have multiple accounts?

Metro Hotmail might be what finally pushes me from Hotmail to iCloud for my email. It's a shame since I've used my Hotmail since 1997...

If they had to settle on a common consistent design, why not Aero, why Metro?

Windows 8? Just guessing. That and Aero wouldn't work too well on the non-desktop systems.. they're going for a unified interface.

Aero doesn't work with touch I guess. Plus pretty interfaces with neat drop shadows and anti-aliasing belong to Apple anyway. Microsoft is going against the tide with Metro!

Well the truth is you can't render the stuff you can on Windows, Windows Phone, Windows LIVE, XBOX, Office web apps. So I guess they figured metro was the way to go and I think its going pretty well now that everything is being unified. In the end the consumer wins!

Anyway I can set it as my main account? I have it as an alias, but when I try and make it my main email, it says I can't use outlook.com.

The "make sure you're not a robot" part has gotta be one of the worst implementations I've ever seen. It refuses to take what I put in, and the way some of the letters are arranged it's impossible to tell if it's upper or lower case. The audio is 100% completely worthless too. This is frustrating me to the point where I'm about to give up.

Edit: After trying this probably 20+ times, it finally let me in. Now I have another account I won't use.

That might have been the point of the verification.

hahaha classic, its made you put in the verification numerous times to prevent you from making numerous accounts!!!

Sounds like a string of bad luck. I carelessly entered the verification (did all lowercase, didn't double check, done in about 4-5 seconds) and it worked the first time.

Sweet! Got the 2nd name I wanted (the 1st was to short I imagine) so, yay!

Also, love the new layout. Very clean and looks great.

Ambroos@outlook.com : check! I'm not sure I like it though.

Probably shouldn't post your email address online like that... you don't want a spammer finding it...

Just tried it and wow! The layout is so clean.
Compared to the Hotmail.com page, heaven and earth....

A keeper!
