Hotmail turns 15, makes you feel old

H

It is hard to remember a time when Hotmail didn’t exist. The web based email service has been a cornerstone for helping individuals connect all over the world. On July 4th, Hotmail turned 15 years old, a tremendous achievement for any website.

On the Internet, it is easy to have the rug swept out from under your feet. So for Hotmail to remain not only relevant, but still expanding after 15 years, is a tremendous achievement. Currently, “over 3 million people have created aliases using the new alias feature, and over 5 million people worldwide are already using Facebook chat in Hotmail”.

Email has revolutionized how we communicate. When Hotmail was introduced, fax machines ruled the landscape in terms of conversing in semi real-time. But even Email is beginning to show its age, with real-time services such as Twitter taking center stage for quick communication.

While no one knows how long Email will stay relevant, Hotmail played a key part in mass user adoption. And for that, we thank Hotmail for helping to bring us all into the electronic communication age. From everyone at Neowin, we wish Hotmail a Happy Birthday!

My first real, personal e-mail account was the HoTMaiL account I got at an Internet cafe in northwest Calgary in 1997. I didn't even have a computer at the time, so it was a bit of a leap for me, but my then-girlfriend was headed out of town and we wanted a cheap way to communicate.

While Hotmail has had its ups and downs, I don't agree with those who complain that it's spam-infested; it's no worse than Gmail or Yahoo or any other mail service. As e-mail is currently constituted spam is inevitable.

Still have that e-mail account; it's been my main Microsoft ID for years now.

Wow... Signed up for Hotmail back in 1998. Even keeps the record of it. 13 years of great service and use with no complaints. Congrats on the 15 years Hotmail. To find your year, click on your name at the top right corner of your browser for drop down menu then click on 'Account'.

my first email with them was malebolgia26....but now i don't remember my password for it anymore

Heh, yeah I remember being part of Hotmail before Microsoft bought it also. Just found my registration date.

Looks like I missed it by a few days, I wonder number I was to join, heh.

The good old days. Anyone remember when Geocities was pretty much what you had if you wanted to host any personal content? Online journals were pretty common even back then, just that they have the fanciful name of blogs today.

The good old days of the Internet - mucking around with Winsock, Netscape revolutionizing everything then going to **** by version 3, the well deserved rise of Internet Explorer, the old HTML wars - remember when <table> was something absolutely REVOLUTIONARY?

I was with hotmail before it was owned by MS. You know where the name 'Hotmail' came from? HTML mail or HoTMaiL

Got a hotmail account when they first came up. Still use it...as my JUNK MAIL folder.
ANYTIME I purchase anything off of the internet, sign up for a website, or anything other
than family or friends, they get my HOTMAIL email address. I have to dump 100+ junk
emails per day out of hotmail, but my personal email account stays clean. Thanks hotmail

If you go into your Hotmail account settings, it tells you when you registered.

Aww, i missed my accounts 14th bday earlier this year.

I had Hotmail way back around the time it launched. I don't even remember what my address was, but it's probably been expired for at least 12 years now.

No idea when I signed up for it. Was a fair old while ago. Certainly when there was a spinny globe gif on the login page.

Was using hotmail pre-Microsoft buying it out, left to google once it was impossible to manage spam on hotmail.

Yep,
15 years old and still as spam infested, if not more, than ever!!

I think I had an account once with them back in 1997. Got so sick of the spam I switched to Yahoo and still use Yahoo Classic as my main e-mail.

Not everyone was scarmbling for a Gmail account either. Although I have 3 accounts there, 2 of them are totally for storage, but they receive as much spam as Hotmail ever did and I've NEVER given either of those addresses to anyone or used them to post any where.

this was the reason i left gmail (i didn't like google but anyway) spam was horrible like 100+ daily. then i got again a hotmail, because i had one from 2000 but i never remembered the password.
and now i use hotmail, i havent gotten a spam mail. maybe 2 i think. in like 6 months (500 emails).
so im glad i havent gotten junk email like happens to some people

I can't remember what my first email address was... Anyone still have an MSN email account? I think those are ancient, originating in something like the year 3 B.H. (before Hotmail) .

Changed over to Hotmail once Yahoo aquired Rocketmail which I started with (hmmm no actually I had a really old Juno email before that). So 97 or 98 for me. I still get amazement from others at my Hotmail address just being my name.

Remember when it was 5mb of storage or something then Yahoo upped it to 15mb then Microsoft to 40mb. Then Gmail came out with 1GB!

Yup i remember that, it was 2mb (i think) when i started using it in 1999. People would forward me a couple of chain email's with loads of images and my inbox would be full!

Thank God for Gmail or else everyone might still be using 100MB.

When Gmail came out everyone was scrambling to get an invite. There seemed to be no way you could ever fill up 1GB with mail.

I remember this, wow 5mb! How things have changed

No longer have my original email address from 1998 or so but have a new one. Good that Gmail came on the scene, that really kicked the others into gear and Hotmail gets better and better these days, the slick integration of other services has put it right up there. Don't mind using it at all. Gmail while great turned into spam city for me even though I've got just a name for hotmail as well which doesn't get a lot of spam, Gmail does catch it though but lots of it, too much. More random name next time I think.

True that... their SPAM Filters 15 years old too
