HTC Touch HD device revealed

Our friends at MoDaCo have the exclusive scoop on a new HTC Touch device heading into stores for Christmas.

Little is known about this device at the moment, but from the images we can see specs include...

* Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional
* Qualcomm 7201A processor @ 528MHz
* 512MB ROM / 256MB RAM (+32MB on processor)
* WVGA
* 115mm x 62.8mm x 12mm
* GPS / HSDPA etc. etc.
* 5 Megapixel camera (no flash)
* No Dpad or scroll wheel, does have a stylus
* microSD slot
* 1350mAH battery
* 3.5mm headset jack on the top

TheTouch HD is a touch device with WVGA (800X480) resolution compared to the iPhone which runs at 480x320. It certainly looks impressive and one would hope that Windows Mobile 7 ships for this device in the new year.

It took industry ages to "standardize" mobile phone power adapters to 5V (USB). Now they can't release phone with proper aspect ratio and resolution. Is it hard to choose and stick to one standard?

16:9 (TV) - media devices with on-screen control only:

640x360 (Mobile) = 1920x1080 / 3 = 1280x720 / 2

16:10 (PC) - media devices with OS and media bar control:

640x400 (Mobile) = 1920x1200 / 3 = 1280x800 / 2

4:3 (PC) - media devices with OS and media bar control:

640x480 (Mobile) = 1600x1200 / 3
320x240 (Mobile) = 1600x1200 / 6

Now you loose quality, due to wasted screen area and resize filters for improper resolution on all these mobile crap-screen-phones.

Sweet looks like a better deal then iphone 3g. Actually, i believe this has peeled me from the iphone fascination.

As for those who may have not seen

Update: Additional specs...

* 115mm x 62.8mm x 12mm
* 'In stores for Santa'
* GPS / HSDPA etc. etc.
* 5 Megapixel camera (no flash)
* No Dpad or scroll wheel, does have a stylus wink.gif
* microSD slot
* 1350mAH battery
* 3.5mm headset jack on the top!

will be sweet definitely. will be getting me one of these for sure i bet they're cheaper then iphone lol.

Office Mobile is normally included with Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional
Excel Mobile
PowerPoint Mobile
Word Mobile

Plus I like using Nero Mobile and SlingPlayer mobile on my Windows Mobile phone.
I can watch "real" tv live over the net that way with UTMS or Edge normally and change channels or schedule my PVR to record..

Just like that iPod killer? Oh wait, there isn't one...
I can't see it happening. Apple are gaining sufficient ground these days on Microsoft with their software/hardware but they are hardly a 'Microsoft killer'. HTC have a long way before seeing popularity such as the iPhone. After all, TouchFLO is based on ideas from what other phone currently on the market?

Err....HTC actually sell more phones than Apple does. And they have had some things right for ages now, like copy and paste, MMS messaging etc.
The specs on this (even the specs on the Touch Diamond/Pro) beat the iPhone but don't worry, I'm sure Apple will come out with a iPhone v3 soon enough to get back upto date with the others (HTC, Sony etc.)

and HTC had touch before iPhone if I recall and it records video.. Oh guess what you can even emulate RIM on Windows Mobile.
Problem is with HTC most are not branded as HTC they are branded under the Telco name. So you don't see the market penetration.

HTC might not be as popular as Apple because they don't have a CEO which substitutes himself for God but HTC is selling more smart/PDA phones than Apple... since ever.

And BTW TouchFLO is older than the iPhone. There is not a lot HTC has copied from Apple, if anything at all and technically seen the top HTC model has always been at least one generation ahead of Apple!

The Tytn I had already UMTS, copy/paste functionality, MMS, SMS sending to multiple users, video recording more than two years ago. If even already included a GPS chip which unfortunately to due time restraint was never enabled.

The Tytn II had full-speed UMTS/HSDPA, unconstrained GPS functionality, way faster processor and a 3.2 megapixel camera half a year before the iPhone 3G came to the market.

The HTC Touch Pro has, besides all the above, a higher resolution touchscreen than the iPhone 3G.

And now the HTC Touch HD is going to have on top of all that an even higher resolution touchscreen than the Touch Pro for better viewability of websites and a 5 Megapixel months before Apple will be able to react.

And all of them support replaceable batteries, a microSD slot for more storage and an unlimited library of software (4000+ applications already).

HTC is ahead of Apple by miles for years except maybe the UI which is the ONLY advantage the iPhone has over any other HTC phone but technically seen, the iPhone is and always was a joke compared to HTC phones.

Who are you kidding? It is a great Mobile OS. With TouchFLO, its interface looks almost as good/better than the iPhones. It might be a bit laggy on phones with lower hardware, but in phones like these its gonna be great!

TouchFLO is a pointless UI. I mean sure it looks nice and... it erm looks nice. It's no comparison to the iPhone though. The iPhone's features are built around the UI. The HTC takes 8 or so different items from the Windows Mobile menu and animates them. I don't want to like current Apple products as they seem to be gaining quite a monopoly and boy do they have an angle on everything. That said the products they are churning out are very well made.

you don't need to Jailbreak a HTC to get something other then the standard touchflo... and there are improved UIs out there to be had. Besides it is most likely multi touch just as some other HTC are. So you could program your own UI if you wanted. Can't cook roms on a iPhone like you can on a HTC ....don't like a feature .. replace it

Why does the USA have to be so far behind in getting good phones?
I'm still waiting on the Touch Pro to arrive here and now this one has been un-officially announced that beats the pants off the Pro (albeit no keyboard).
I'm guessing if it's before chrimble release for the asian markets then USA won't see it until sometime around next summer.

I never heard of HTC until I got a test of their Touch Diamond. Awful phone, which is bad considering the amount of hype around the phone itself. This has put me off ever looking at their phones ever again. I guess lesson learnt... looks aren't everything.

Oddly popular opinion is that the touch diamond rocks.

it's a PDA, with phone functions.

it's awful at it's factory settings, some tweaks to the registry will pimp up the performance.

0 out of the 4 people who had the phone on trial in my office didn't get one. The phone looks nice but the interface is very slow. You also had to use the stylus for most usage as the screen is too small to be using with your fingers. We did flash the firmware on the phone and admittedly it was a lot quicker afterwards. The panoramic picture feature was also sweet. The phone also doesn't like our Rapid SSL so exchange wouldn't work. The iPhone out of the box excepts the SSL so we had that working on first attempt. I really did want this phone, I am just glad now I got a trial, like I said it's awful in comparison to other phones available.

I wonder why HTC never do decent camera's in their phones. It always seems to be the lowest spec part in all of their devices. I might get me one of these phones though, as I had a TyTn and it was a tremendous phone, this looks to be much improved.

GPS woulda been nice though

at least this model does seem to have GPS .. I have a HTC touch with no GPS too but some models of the Touch had GPS but it wasn't turned on in software.... look at XDA developers pages

Is it me or Sony missed completely the Ultra-high-end Windows Mobile 6.1 smartphone boat when they announced the Xperia X1 in March but have not still delivered?

That is really nice phone. I would switch out my N82 for it but where is the autofocus?

Is it me or does it seem like they leave out features just for the fun of it? Hahaha..some guy just goes, "Nah, that's too much in one device! Take some **** out!"

Much props to HTC they are coming hard with some really good devices. And quickly. Hear that Sony Ericsson?

The new "holy grail" on digital photo is a new (and patented) technology that allow a fast-without-autofocus photo.

may be this device came with this new technique but i doubt it.

5MP is kind of useless without a flash.

Flash and resolution has nothing quite related. I rarely take photos with a flash with a real camera to take advantage of much better natural lighting.

High resolution != high quality images.
