Hulu integration with Facebook caused some security issues

An attempt to integrate Facebook features in the streaming video service Hulu caused some problems earlier this week. In a post on the official Hulu blog site, the company admitted that " ... we discovered a technical issue affecting a limited number of users who connected to Hulu through Facebook." The issue itself caused some of Hulu's users to gain temporary access to the accounts of other Hulu members.

According to the blog post, "We’re still drilling down on the precise nature of the issue, but we know that it was a coding and configuration error on Hulu’s side, and not the result of hacking, or other third party actions, or a vulnerability in Facebook Connect." The blog adds that just 50 Hulu users were affected by the issue. Those user had personal info such as email addresses exposed but Hulu said that more important info such as credit card numbers were not affected.

At the moment the Facebook integration is on hold with Hulu stating, " ... we disabled all the connection points to Facebook Connect on Hulu, and we required all Hulu users to login again directly through our site. We are also taking the precautionary measure of resetting privacy settings to the most restrictive settings for anyone who logged into their Hulu account through Facebook during the affected period. Once we are certain that the issue has been fully addressed, we will re-launch our Facebook Connect program."

As we have reported earlier this week Hulu has been the the subject of a possible sale with Google looking like it is the leader in sales negotiations.

How is this NOT facebook's fault?
The error enabled Hulu users to see other Hulu user's accounts. I imagine this means their Hulu account details. As it's all in the Hulu house of cards, it can only be Hulu's fault.

Plus Hulu said the error was in Their coding.. ergo Their fault.

What's the problem with Facebook? Just use the most stringent privacy settings.
It's frequently unusably slow. The creator has made it quite clear that they do not actually care about their user's privacy. They frequently make large, sweeping changes to the detriment of users and only backtrack after huge backlashes.

Half of Facebook does not even make sense anymore, anyway. For instance, I will be finishing my Master's at the end of the year (December, 2011), and so my graduate school is "XYZ 2011," but on my page it misleadingly states that I have "studied" (as opposed to studying). It's a small thing, but the lack of attention to detail is regularly the source of huge privacy leaks at Facebook.

I look forward to yet another competitor surfacing eventually, so I can jump ship. Can't wait until Facebook goes public and they are even more adamant about throwing ads in your face, probably with pictures of your friends in them, unbeknownst to them, again.

Hopefully google does get it and makes it google+ only.

Umm.... No. I wouldn't like Google to have them. They have YouTube already.

Considering the already low quality and low bandwidth of most YouTube videos, I do not want Hulu going the same route.

Plus, combine Google+, your search history and now your TV interests? Talk about putting all of your eggs in one basket and giving Google one heck of a huge marketing egg.

No way I will ever join Google+ for starters. And I think Google taking over Hulu would be the death of it.

Yea wth going on with youtube speeds of late? 240 playes fine... 720 is almost dead in any connection I got, home or work.

I deleted my FB account a week ago. Ghee they make it difficult. Just too many negative comments on there hopefully I'll get a google+ invite and I can be more selective and in control. Looks like a great slimline FB replacement

You can be in control in Facebook too, just so you know. This Google+ hype is becoming annoying.
