iOS 5 now available

Apple has made good on its promise to release iOS 5 today as the download is now live. iOS 5 is the latest iOS release from Apple and features iMessenger, a revamped notification system and a host of other updates that many users have been asking for.

While the new OS does not provide anything revolutionary in terms of new features as it combines many of the items found on other platforms, for iOS users, it will be a welcomed update to finally rid the platform of the awful notification system.

Along with iOS 5, Apple has released several other applications to control your Airport device, Find your friends, and of course, iCloud.

To download the update, make sure you have the latest version of iTunes, connect your device, and you will be able to update your device from within iTunes.

Booo! My 2nd gen ipod isn't supported. Ah well, at least it still plays music, half the apps don't work these days but still... got music

Or perhaps they should have anticipated the rush, and properly scaled out their server farm. Why do they even need to contact their servers? It already downloaded the update, it shouldn't need to send my data to their server to make sure I am permitted to install.

They should turn it off for public builds

I'm on windows 7 x64...says error 3002. From everything I've read that means you can only do a backup/restore/restore. Can't do a backup/update. I'd love to confirmation on this though.

That's right. I "updated" mine, and it did a complete restore, took almost two hours alltogether... and at the end most of my own ringtones were gone, now trying to upload them to the phone again from the computer.

I just tried restoring TO the iOS 5 file but to still no avail. Keeps giving me a 3002.

I did a backup before the mess started, if i do restore, does it restore with IOS5? or still stuck on 4.3.5

The problem I'm having is that when I try and restore it's automatically trying to update at the same time, and for some reason iTunes isn't communicating with the servers.

I found a problem article on this for the BETA and it said that there was a line in the host file to delete. Unfortunately that line doesn't exist in mine.

Ahh, good old Apple.

yep, me too... thought it was host file, wasnt.. just un/reinstalled itunes and trying again

I'm getting this too. How annoying. And I've upgraded to 7.2 already... (OSX)

Also, I think the error is 3002

no, it says 3200... on windows at least... lol

there been some bad "apples" (yeah, i know horrible) the last couple of days... new facebook app sent wifes iphone into recovery, had to restore w/ no backup... and now mine being a goof

It could be 3200 for Windows and/or iPhone.

I'm trying to install onto my iPad and I'm definitely getting a 3002 error.
And then when I try restoring it won't even connect to the iPad server.

Nope, error 3200. The dialog says:

"The iPod "name's iPod 4G" could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (3200)."

There is a More Information button which takes me to an Apple web site, but they do not list error 3200.

For some reason my download through iTunes timed out with a network error...

Tried doing it again and it takes forever to connect to the server...

So resorting to manual.

Grrr - Anyone else having the problem where after it backs up the iPad and reboots it, it says that it can't be found? Seems to take a few extra seconds for the iPad to restart, but by that point iTunes decides it won't go any further. Think I had this problem (or something like it) before the last big update (version 4 I think)
Any thoughts or advice gratefully accepted

BS this update is taking 2 hours....after a full download it says network timed out at 99% even though this always happens during a firmware update. now after a re-download its taking forever to install and it hasn't even put all my apps on it yet.

plus the apps are all disorganized with some in folders and others not. and the music and vids haven't synced yet...update my ass. it takes less time to completely upgrade a PC

You can always use bittorrent to get the GM version. It's the exact same thing.

Also as long as you backup before restoring, all your apps/folders/etc should be the same as you left them

anyone getting an error when trying to install it?

yes … its annoying. i assume its because of all the people trying to verify the update.

Downloading the IPSW went plenty fast 900KB+/s.. But what is going slow is the backup process for my ipod.. Its been backing up for over 20mins now and the progress bar is only at maybe 5% +/- a few.. Backup has never taken this long..

Depends how you unlocked it. Officially? It will be fine. Ultrasn0w or some sort of jailbreak? You will lose your unlock

If it's unlocked by ultrasn0w you gotta have to wait for the new version of redsn0w that will jailbreak iOS 5 and will customize IPSW. That way you will be able to prevent baseband update.

But you gotta have to wait for a while cuz it's not gonne be out soon.

Mine was fast until about 12:30, when all you other freeloaders started downloading. I might not even install until an untethered anyways.
