iPad HD with Retina display could launch this fall

There have been many rumors about the iPhone 4S lately, and now there's a rumor about the next iPad. Rumor now has it that Apple will be releasing a new member to the iPad lineup. Sources say that this is a revision to the iPad 2. One has to wonder if this is what Steve Jobs meant when he said 2011 would be the year of the iPad 2.

Sources for This is My Next say that the new device will be dubbed the iPad HD. It will have a screen resolution of 2048 x 1536. As hard as the idea of this tablet is to swallow, it is said to be aimed at folks who work in video and photo production. The tablet could even be released alongside an iPad version of Final Cut or Aperture. The device is said specifically to not be an iPad 3, meaning it is complimentary to the lineup, think MacBook and MacBook Pro.

There’s one question that has yet to be answered, however. Just why was everyone reporting on the supposed “iPhone 4S” recently? We now have an answer. Simply put, as the iPhone 5 components are built for a smaller and lighter device, they can be easily fit into a casing which for all intents and purposes looks identical to an iPhone 4. Sources say  that Apple has been testing new components in old cases. The iPhone 4 design has apparently fallen out of favor with the company.

No there is a difference between using the latest technology and testing new designs. The antenna wasn't to do with the technology (correct me if I'm wrong) but a new design where skin bridges the gap on the silver edging strip.

Apple tend to hold back a year with what's current whilst also leaving functionality for next years model. It's hard to explain but good business and also makes their devices more robust (im not saying they are perfect by any means). Just so you know, I don't own a single apple product. Not because I don't like them or the company but my personal preference is something else.

Apple: leaving features out of products so they have something for the next generation of products...

This is what makes apple great. They refuse to use the latest technology, they leave that to all the early adopters. Once all the bugs have been ironed out they then introduce those into the line up. Remember a few months ago when apple had to recall of their imacs due to a bug within the motherboard chipsets? No, neither do I ;-)

Think about Samsung, Sony, LG, Toshiba, Panasonic, Intel, AMD.....EVERY manufacturer leaves something out else what would they sell the next year? You know you dont HAVE to buy the latest and greatest. We are now living in a world where people buy a device which fits their requirements and only upgrades when it no longer serves that purpose. Technology is moving so quickly now you are a fool to keep upgrading just because you want the 'must have' gadget.

You're contradicting yourself. By saying every manufacturer leaves something out for the next generation, you're also saying that everyone is like Apple - that is they also iron out the bugs. Recalls happen, and bugs in hardware/software happen regardless of how much testing you do. Remember the iPhone 4 antenna gate?

Apple's lineup is so inconsistent. They could've made the original iPad have a front facing camera, retina display, etc. There is very little innovation with this company, just great marketing.

I think the article is trying to say there is no such thing as an iPhone 4S. iPhone 4 casing has fallen out of favor, however the casing is still used for testing purposes during the development of iPhone 5.

I think the author is trying to say the following:

1. iPhone 5 components are very small.
2. iPhone 5 components fit the iPhone 4 casing, so they have been testing the iPhone 5 in cases similar in appearance to the iPhone 4.
3. People see Apple testing these new devices that look like the iPhone 4, and conclude that Apple must be releasing an iPhone 4GS because they can't visibly see much difference to the normal iPhone 4.

However I don't understand why the author would then state: 'The iPhone 4 design has apparently fallen out of favor with the company.'

Apple has changed the physical appearance of the iPhone with almost every new model (other than the 3G-3Gs). So it isn't hard to believe that the iPhone 5 will look quite different than the iPhone 4. People also seem to forget that Apple did field testing of the iPhone 4 in shells that looked very much like the iPhone 3Gs.

As above i'm not exactly sure what this article is trying to say. I'm assuming it's talking about an iPhone 4S in addition to an iPhone 5?

As far as i know this is true, my partner's sisters husband is quite high up at O2 and he said there is 2 iPhones coming out in the autumn.

Ok so from all these rumours: Apple is going to release an iphone 4s whic his cheaper and faster, an iphone 5/6 which is yet another new iphone, an ipad 3 probably for late next year and an ipad HD for an earlier release?

as a designer..
i think more pixels are good..
but The bigger the pixels.. the better or easier to spot changes or mistakes or faults..
the smaller they get the less we see them.. even zoomed in. And when it will run or be displayed on a low res display all that will show. Plus.. Ipad with iOS??? put Lion on it and it will be Amazing.

These rumors are getting ridiculous. Every week something new pops up contradicting the last.

And Apple's PR firm keeps doing what they are paid a ton of money to do...keep the Apple brand in the spotlight.

I guess if sites didn't report rumours they would have nothing to write about ?
As always happens people expectations are set very high after all these rumours and then when we find out it is a non event everyone has a go at the manufacturer.
PS :- the latest rumour is that the iPad3 can make a mean latte, you heard it here first.

Certainly useful during lectures then!

Better image quality (smaller pixels = smoother edges). Also makes editing video and graphics a bit easier with extra space.

Ipad HD: 2048 x 1536 on 9,7", please tell me how that is practical. Cramming FullHD on 15" is already overdoing it.

Overdoing it?? Though I suppose the jump from 8 bit to 16 bit was a overdoing it to some people.

thats color .. this is silly... the iphone needs retina display because people hold them close to their face when they need the screen to be bigger in the case of watching a movie or reading small text..the ipad is usually at arms length away..

But wouldn't that make everything very tiny, e.g. if you have a picture that is 100x100 pixels, wouldn't it be super tiny on that display? And when it is that tiny wouldn't fingers be too big for practical usage?
My gf has a laptop with 18" FullHD LED, and she has to change the system DPI so make text readable.

they didnt make everything very tiny with the iphone, because they scaled things up to cover the same screen area but with higher resolution. they would do the same with the ipad. you're thinking windows on a 18'' fullHD screen. even mobile safari is scaled up so that you dont notice much.

So it's basically the same as a picture larger than your monitor, and you zoom out until it covers/fits the screen of the monitor, yes? (to put it into simpler terms)
So same size of everything just much smoother, but does that really help with the editing?

That was my thought when a couple of friends that work as designers stated it as soon as we got to play with the iPad 2, they wanted more detail in the images since they had the cpu power to handle it, they felt kind of disappointed by the screen, for me is more than enough, but then again I'm just using for Internet, book reading and social networks managements. So looking at it as a pro version sounds more logical to me than to bash the news.

I'm not sure if the resolution needs to be THAT high, but as it is I think it could stand to be higher. Text looks a lot sharper and easier on the eyes on the iPhone 4. If iPads resolution was bumped, it would be a more useful ebook and emagazine reader.

I have no idea what this article is trying to say.

It's just very badly written and doesn't flow.

I think it's essentially saying there may be a beefed-up version of the iPad coming to sit alongside the current one, and so creating an iPad range of products like there is for the MacBooks.

I've no idea what the last paragraph is going on about though.

This is the second time I read an article from James and I have a hard time understanding parts of it...
Don't take offense James, it's just that it does get confusing... like many said, that last paragraph was all over the place.
"There's one question that has yet to be answered, however. Just why was everyone reporting on the supposed “iPhone 4S” recently? We now have an answer." well we don't have the answer? or we do?

panacea said,

In that last paragraph the writer is saying that to test the iPhone 5 or 4S, they've been using the iPhone 4 case because the new parts are small enough to fit into that instead of risking the next iPhone to be seen outside (remember the iPhone 4 in a 3GS case?). "The iPhone 4 design has apparently fallen out of favor with the company," meaning Apple doesn't like the design and they're probably going for a new design for the next iPhone.

Logically, I cannot make sense of this article.

...........There's one question that has yet to be answered, however. Just why was everyone reporting on the supposed “iPhone 4S” recently? We now have an answer. SO? they can fit into Iphone4.... but its out of favor? So what is the answer? iPad HD?

then we have no iphone 5 (or 4s)? or do we? or we also get the iPad HD with the speculation components + brand new iphone 5???

Nobody forces you to buy the high-end model now do they? I'd like to see anyone else incorporate a screen with a resolution that high for <€500...

.Neo said,

There's a lot of people who think it's possible. Unfortunately, they haven't been in the businesses long enough to understand that things like a $300 iPad is impossible. Apple would lose money.

Oh and even those Bills of material always give me a good laugh. A lot of journalists are blind enough to put that on their website and just state that an iPad could be worth, for example $150 because they have the BOM. It doesn't change the fact that it needs R&D, marketing, iOS, hours of labour for production, expensive production machines, a box, it needs to be shipped and distributed, it takes up space in stores, and stores have to make their part of the profit on it at the end of the day, else they wouldn't sell it.

This thing is basically a whole Apple computer where engineers have tried to think about every possible thing, never expect a cheap price, or else get a cheapo tablet, there's a few of them.
