iPhone 4 wins 'Best Mobile Device' award at MWC

As Mobile World Congress 2011 begins to wrap up, the awards for best in class are being announced. This year's winner of the "Best Mobile Device" is Apple's iPhone 4.

Despite the design flaw with the antenna, it still managed to beat out other top tier devices to take home the crown. Cnet reports that the iPhone 4 was praised by the judges for its "great screen, sharp design, fantastic materials, and phenomenal ecosystem for app developers. In a tight race, the iPhone 4 built on the success of its predecessors to set the pace for smartphones."

The iPhone 4 has a love/hate relationship among users; you either love the Apple ecosystem or lambaste Apple for its outrageous tax it places on users and developers. No matter your opinion, the judges at MWC still crowned the phone as the top mobile device.

Apple has sold millions of the iPhone 4 and it has recently been released on Verizon allowing Apple to gain more market share for its phone. While initial sales figures have not been released for their Verizon iPhone, initial reports are suggesting that sales were lower than expectations.

how can this be?
There are 900 variants of google phones and not 1 of them can beat the iphone?
Apple must have bribed them.... no other explanation
I demand a recount by pro-google judges
(lol)

That's exactly the problem. There are 900 phones using Android, thus each of these products lose 900 times their sales than if they were alone.

The iPhone 4 is the only one of its kind and does not lose any sale this way.

Good job apple, but I suspect HTC will be getting pretty close to producing a handset which exceeds this level of quality. Lets hope this gives apple a decent kick as they've been a bit complacent I think recently and it will start to show very, very soon..... Good times ahead for consumers of both android and iOS phones I think as the competition heats up (hopefully nokia + MS are taking notes at this point.....)

apple has the smartphone business down to a science while everyone else is rushing to fill that wide wide void in between. as long as apple keeps producing products that "just work" then they will keep getting awards like this. they have never let the competition influence how they design and build products and is another reason why they have been so successful.

I think that signal loss issue was the selling point here
Can't imagine how a improperly designed device could win this award.

I can see why they gave it the award. The Apple App Store is better then the Androids and Blackberry's, and it is a nice looking phone. I think iOS isn't the best mobile but most award shows tend to give awards to most popular. I still love my Android and am not mad about Apple winning. Good job for them!

The interface hasn't changed appreciably since 2006, some meh hardware upgrades, basically unusable by anyone without a computer and Itunes. "Best Mobile Device" ROFL mmmkay.

and yet the iPhone outsells any other device on the smartphone market by a long shot. Remember we are talking individual devices here, not OS.

So are you saying just because they sell more devices, that they are better?

no dont put random meaning where there is none. stop trying to cause your android is better than ios arguement. this award pits one device against one device. not one device against an entire line of devices. as far as individual devices go, iphone is the most popular.

I asked a question, didnt randomize aanything, said nothing about android, and never tried to start an argument. You said something, I responded. Thats how things work. Quit trying to pull the android card on me and get over it.

Hundreds of successful calls and countless times using 3G on my iPhone 4 beg to differ.

You must have tried it for yourself to say something like that.
Journalists are right about the problem, but it took impossible proportions in their articles.

The screen is the best I've ever seen on a mobile device.
I think the fact its mounted flush helps, unlike on some of the HTC phones.

Whilst I think it is a beautiful device, with an amazing screen I do have a love-hate relationship with it. I couldn't do without my apps (more exactly games) that I have purchased on it, but I hate the querks that it has (e.g. problems with deleting email when it can not connect to the server, poor signal despite other devices having signal, the way push / notifications is presented to the user).

I disagree that the problems are blown out of proportion, such as antennagate as even in the UK I could repro to a certain extent (however I can't comment how bad it 'really' was for the US).

We have more towers here in the US. Phone wasn't initially designed to work in other countries. So I imagine "antennagate

I could replicate a degrade in signal, but I could also do it with my mates HTC Desire. I couldn't get either to drop calls though so I personally think it was blown out of proportion as I've never had signal issues with any of the iPhones.

As for your other complaints I completely agree! reading/deleting email with no internet causes weirdness which annoys me too. And we're in desperate need for better notification handling, we need Androids pull down bar. I'm sure the Android experience isn't perfect though and they must have OS complaints like we do. Hardware wise the iPhone 4 is brilliant IMO.

Good hardware, So-so OS

So-so? Only Android (and maybe Windows Mobile 7) compete with it, so are you saying that all the other OSes in the world of cellphones suck? That's a lot

Ha. I'm an iPhone 4 user and I agree with FMH. There are a lot of features I REALLY wish they had. They are far behind Android in terms of notifications. I have to click buttons to access current info (emails, weather)--I wish I could customize the lock screen!

Sorry, but the lack of these 2 features alone does not make the entire OS so-so.

Tell me about dozens of missing features compared to 3-4 OSes, or a buggy OS, now it's going to be so-so.

Awesome! Definitely the nicest looking handset on the market and the screen is phenomenal. It has its weaknesses (some of which have been blown completely out of proportion by people who don't even own the device and some media), but overall its a great phone.

The iPhone 4 has a love/hate relationship among users

I disagree strongly with that statement. The users I know love the iPhone 4. The people who hate the iPhone 4 and Apple's whole business strategy do not own an iPhone 4.

Anyone who jailbreaks disagrees with Apple's policy to some extent and the fact that the community is so large says otherwise.

I jailbreak and think it has advantages that Apple puts some restrictions...
With many I do not agree, but IMHO I find it much less annoying than most I guess.

Ahhh... Good point. I had my phone JB'd for awhile, but am finding less and less reasons to. I'm basically left with 2 reasons: free hotspot tethering with MiWi (which violates my ToS w/ my provider) and LockInfo.

Yeah, Apple have been more relaxed with the App Store lately.
Although the recent subscription issue is a bit of a U-turn.

Agree, when I jailbroke it, it was to put lock information on and to customise it. Now with custom wallpapers I don't see a need. However I have heard you can change how notifications are handled, so I might re-jailbreak now there is a Windows untethered one.

Jailbreakers are a seriously small minority.

but that is their policy not the actual phone.. It is a good device although I dont like the company that made it.

I couldn't live without BiteSMS.

While not having had an iPhone 4, I've used previous models and iPod touches. I hate them, I actually hate itunes more than the phone though and don't ever want to have to install it again!

I agree. The only reason I now JB is BiteSMS and some custom app icons. I could quite easily live without the icons but BiteSMS... No chance.

If the phones were unlocked I wouldn't jailbreak mine, but I need to jailbreak it to unlock it and use it with my carrier.

Really wish I stuck with the iPhone 4 when my bought my own contract when I left my old job. Won't be going Android again, roll on 24 months I guess.

Price your phone better Apple and you can dominate the market even more than you already do.

I think that's what they are trying to do with the upcoming "mini me" iPhones

Still wouldnt help. Apple cannot beat FREE which is what a lot of phone providers are offering other phones for with a contract.

I don't even own an iPhone 4 - or use a Mac. So how am I "drunk". But it was by far the biggest and best upgrade to the iPhone yet.
