iPhone users fall for fake iOS 7 'waterproof feature' ad, rage ensues

4chan, which is notorious for its mean pranks, can claim another victory. This time against the more gullible iPhone owners who believed that the recent iOS 7 software update actually waterproofs the device, yes a software update, due to a fake ad circulated by the community.

Note: This is the fake ad.

The ad displayed above, and circulated on social media sites, was created by a 4chan user and claimed "This utilizes emergency shut off of the phone's power supply and corresponding components to prevent any damage dealt to the delicate circuitry". At the bottom of the poster was a promise that "This feature is covered by Apple's warranty policy", as well as a sneaky "Confirmed by Lifehacker" claim.

The bait was then set for people willing to try out the non-existent 'new feature' only to find their iPhones had been irreversibly damaged in the process.

How it all started.

People like @Pretty_Ricky33 who fell for the prank displayed his anger with the following tweet "Whoever said iOS 7 is Waterproof your phone.... F*** You", as well as many others, whose tweets aren't much different from "Pretty Ricky's". Others (like the tweet below) simply admitted defeat and are simply looking for a replacement iPhone.

It appears that at least one celebrity also got duped by the claims, as pointed out by alwaysonacoffebreak in the comments below:

To clarify, iOS 7 doesn't waterproof your phone, and even if you believed it did, it's always a good idea to check the official site to be sure the claims are true.

Baaaaa! Stupid is as stupid does....

iOS 7 software update actually waterproofs lol ... there is no question ask we are living the world of smartphone stupid people !!! who agree?

So that's like 4 users out of the 200 thousand who upgraded to iOS 7.

If you are stupid enough to actually believe that a SOFTWARE update will make your iDevice waterproof, you deserve it....

I don't get too sad about dumb people doing dumb things. Seriously, a software update making a phone waterproof? Check those people for brain activity!!

I remember the last scam from 4Chan. Telling people that the iPhone 4,4S and 5 could be wirelessly charged by being put in the Microwave for 30 seconds.

I wonder what they've tested/dropped it in? ive accidentally left my lumia 800 in a jean pocket and put it in the washing machine for 1 1/2 hours, turned it off put it in a towel and left it on the radiator for like 6-8 hours. Still works perfectly. Still worked out of the washing machine perfectly to although the speakers seemed a little water logged!!

Although tbh it doesnt just pertain to the iphone sticking anything electrical/electronic is water isnt exactly a good idea anyway unless it can be submerged

Sad considering the image clearly says this is a fake ad at the bottom.

Nope. That's neowin's footnote. In nowhere there is a message telling that the ad is fake.

Well I can buy whatever but I'll prefer to buy what I can feel is mine rather than buy what would tell me what to do and how to do it. iSheeps don't even know what they are holding in their hands and love their shepherd who is raising them for mutton. lol. What's funny is that the user is the product not the phone itself.

lol you are arguing with a stranger on the internet, get a life and stop being mad like that

Technological Darwinism

What's next? Maybe show a fake iPhone being beat like a Nokia 920 and encourage iPhone users to try it. (With tiny print at the bottom of the video stating it is a Nokia 920 and don't try this with an actual iPhone of course.)

I put it into distilled water, and nothing happened! </fail> <spoiler>of course because there is no electrolytes in distilled water</spoiler>

edit: I'm aware capacitors with electrolytes in them could short, but this is just a joke

It wouldn't work anyway because I guarantee there's contaminants on the phone that will make the water conductive.

aware of this, that's why it was just a joke

LOL @ the ppl that fell for this ad. Like Dogsbed said, "smart formalities" should have been a dead giveaway. Also there is no such thing as "Thermodistribution" and "Thermal Distribution" would pertain to heat. If they has left out the "smart formalities" and used "Hydro Distribution" then it would have made more sense in context. However, expecting a software update to also update your hardware is foolish in the first place.

This kind of pranks should be done always and on all kinds of levels.... it's the best way to "educate", isheeps....!!!
(i'm not trolling, i really mean what i say, and by isheeps i'm not reffering to EVERY apple-product-users, just to those who really ARE isheeps and this prank/article proves)

Not all people understand the concept of software/hardware. And the whole world is not filled with tech savvy people.
Is it an excuse to misguide them then? Is it fun (besides geeks and their related species) to see people losing their hard earned money?
Well, its not funny for me.

'smart formalities'? This crap use of the English language on the very first sentence wasn't enough to tell people that it was fake?

Idiots.

It works because Apple is known to take similar liberties with language and technological terms.

I just tried it and it actually does work. Wow, +1 to Apple. I hope the same thing comes to other hardware soon - I once had my iMac G5 fall in the bath tub when I went to plug a USB flash drive into the back of it - those rubber bases aren't actually that grippy... The windows steamed up pretty quickly.

This my friends is what I call the "Definition of Stupidity". How anyone belived that software made the phone water proof is beyond me.

This comment waterproofs your PC! Go ahead and throw it in the bath!

* Waterproofing is covered under Neowin's warranty Policy

It's fake, so you'd expect such claims to be added. Infact this makes it even more fake, since when does Apple need a website to confirm their features?

It will "magically" stop working when testing if it is waterproof, probably a feature How dumb can people be to believe a software update will enhance the hardware .. jeez!

I love it.

But on the other hand it enrages me because i can't get my head around how stupid some people really are.... The same type of people that post and share the same crap on Facebook that as soon as it's posted they think it's true and share.

Technology really has created a generation of complete retards.

I need to be more specific here. I'm not just talking about the iPhone and it's price but tech in general. You don't buy an 1000 dollar CPU and go on to think since it costs that much it doesn't need a fan, should be built in for that kind of money right?

D'uh.

Technology didnt create the retards.. it just gave them an open channel to show it to the world

Yeah thats pretty much what i meant, sorry.

I don't even know why anyone would want to test it, even if you did believe it to be true.. Did some people see the ad and then throw it straight into a glass of water? what do they stand to gain by knowing that their phone is water proof? are they going to be less careful with it? start leaving it soaked in water? probably not, so it was a pointless test anyway.

Of course, but that's different story tho. And also depends on what you use it for...

nah, check her tweet feed. she posted that, quickly followed (2minutes) by a "nevermind, definitely not waterproof". she was clearly taking the ****

That actually goes to show you that she bought into it at first. Or even worse, maybe she tried it?

Also I found it in the feed that was linked in this article, I don't own a Twitter account so can't really see much of other people's feeds.

She said the "new iPhone" is waterproof. That is completely believable. There's a difference between believing a new model of device is water proof and believing a software update makes older phones waterproof.

When Ellen says waterproof iOS7, people re-tweet like nuts. But when a girl want a new phone, no one gives a c**p. This is just shows how much people is ignoring Apple and f**ked up brains.

Yes iOS7 was overhaul design and comes with some new features. So this prank was easy to slip in.

I know right? People are stupid. Obviously it won't make it water proof. But with iOS 7, you know have the ability to download more RAM.

As someone here said, if you're foolish enough to think that a software update will magically waterproof your phone, you pretty much deserve whatever happens.

Totally. But then that's what happens when the technologically ignorant masses are let loose with expensive electronics

I have a feeling that's a large cross-section of iPhone users. I mean c'mon, how else would Apple be able to 'update' a phone every 6 months with nothing new and then get people to go nuts for it each time?

I hate Apple as much as the next person, but to say there is "nothing" new? That's a bit disingenuous... Even I, in my blind Apple hatred, will admit that they have moved forward with each iteration.

The issue isn't that they don't move forward, it's that they have slowed to a crawl and fallen behind the competition on multiple fronts.
