Is Disney considering going HD DVD?

Unlike other members of the Blu-ray Association, who always withdraw from HD DVD votes, Walt Disney Home Entertainment, a major Hollywood studio and one of the strongest backers of Blu-ray disc format, voted for approval of a preliminary specification of 51GB triple-layer HD DVD media. At the Steering Committee meeting in September Disney voted for triple layer twin-format HD DVD as well as triple layer HD DVD 51GB revision 1.9 preliminary media standards, according to the notes from the event available at the DVD Forum. The fact that in both cases Walt Disney voted for the new HD DVD standards, might not be proof they've changed sides, but I can assure you it raised some eyebrows.

Disney is a large part of this. I know so many people that rarely buy non-Disney movies. So many movies released every year would definitely sway a lot of people.

I don't see why every company doesn't go multi. Larger audience = more sales = more money. What could be simpler?
What could be simpler is one format... It's a bit like Highlander; there can only be one. The general public don't like the uncertainty of 2 formats - both of which is constantly informing you they are beating the other & the other will be gone soon. How many regular folk really want to commit to that?

Pixar is now part of Disney, has been for over a year.

Yes I know that, but Pixar is a subsidiary of Disney, so while Apple may work with Pixar, it doesn't mean Apple works with Disney, you know, their non-Pixar works.

the game is not disney but, square enix, there are 2 mobile games(kh 358/2 and birth by sleep) first and maybe after kh3 i hope for ps3

I know that it's developed by Square but it is also licensed heavily by... DISNEY. You would think that it would be a cash cow for Disney to encourage Square to continue to put these titles out. I don't own anything SONY, so I hope it comes out for X360.

i dont know who will win for sure... but what i been hearing lately is sure favoring HD-DVD ... which is who i would rather have win anyways cause it sounds like a better more thought out format etc.

to me blu-ray's only real advantage over hd-dvd is "storage space" ;)

plus not to mention sony's "rootkit" crap.

Wow disney... thats almost like getting the porn industry to back a format... Disney is a HUGE distributor and there are millions of kids that will scream for a movie and if mommy and daddy have a HD player like bluray or HD-DVD then they would be more likely to buy it on that format... this could be a big move if it happens

That's something of an understatement since the porn industry really doesn't matter. People are still living in the 70s that think that it's of any importance. What are adult movie sales in comparison to all others, are they even on the radar?

Disney helped develop the HDi software with Microsoft... the interactivity is very important for their business.... why they changed to Blu-Ray was because they thought HD DVD wouldn't be able to compete. It has, and has now got Paramount on board. Warner Bros are tempted to go red.
If they both move over it could change the game fairly quickly.

I wonder how many companies have really settled for a specific format for the foreseeable future...

They must be as influenced by the news as we are as end users, with this format war still waging.

yeah im waqiting for the day they bring out Cars or something like that Pixar box in HDDVD... sucks seeing all the cool things coming in the BRD sets and not HDDVD....

I really hope they at least to cross-platform. There are a ton of Disney movies I'd like to own in HD. We'll see what happens

hmm, am I the only one asking myself, if they are supporting the format, why WOULDN'T they vote for the new format and/or revisions?

It says Disney voted....

what D: i didn't quite get that

Presumably, every entity involved in media productions is supposed to pick one side or the other in this stupid format war and then stick with its choice. However, there's no law that says you can't support both formats at the same time – which is a smart choice if you know that neither format is going to win this “war”.

Heck, I'm just waiting for Samsung to release its BD-UP5000 dual-format player. Then I can afford to not give a damn which format any movie is released on.
