Jay-Z and other celebs to appear in UK Windows Phone 8 ads

We have already reported that the Nokia Lumia 920 TV ad campaign has started, featuring a chance for one person to be actor Will Arnett's "assistant" for the day. Now there's word that the UK will soon be hit with a number of ads that promote Windows Phone 8 in general and they will use well known celebrities to help sell Microsoft's mobile OS.

The Sun reports that music artists Jay-Z and Gwen Stefani will be a part of the campaign, as well as UK actor James Corden (perhaps best known in the States for his role as Craig Owen in two episodes of Doctor Who). Corden's ad, which begins on UK TV screens on Monday, has him playing with Xbox mobile games on his device.

In fact, the Windows Phone UK YouTube page already has posted a video showing UK TV presenter Holly Willoughby and her own "Live Tiles" screen for Windows Phone 8.

Here in the US, Microsoft did indeed start its own Windows Phone 8 campaign today during NFL football coverage. As we reported before, the commercial was the same one that was shown at the Windows Phone 8 launch a couple of weeks ago. It did not have any celebrities and there's no word on if Microsoft will employ any for the US marketing campaign.

What is this suppose to do? Make me want to buy a Windows Phone 8? I wouldn't care if Microsoft invited Jesus to advertise for Windows Phone 8. After the harsh treatment that Microsoft has given Windows Phone 7 users, there is no way they are getting another sale from me.

Jay-Z and Gwen Stefani? What year is this again? These people were probably hired by old, out-of-touch dads trying to look "hip" in front of the kids.

I like these commercial. They use celebrity endorsement in a way that actually makes sense for the product itself.

This could work...
Are these stars even relevant in the UK?

I feel like, if you're going to pick a star for an international commercial, then it should be a movie star. Like, you know, the one they had co-announce the OS in late October: Jessica Alba.

in the UK James Corden is very well known, along with Holly. Obviously Gwen and JZ are well known.

I don't recognize the UK stars, but I assumed that Gwen and JZ were known. However, do people care about them over there? Gwen is popular in the US, but she has fallen out of the limelight, while JZ is still rather popular as he flip-flops on his retirement plans.
