Kim Dotcom gets a visit from Woz

Kim DotCom, the founder of Megaupload and accused pirate king, got an interesting visit last, when Apple co-founder and hacker extraordinaire Steve Wozniak stopped by Dotcom's house during a trip to New Zealand. They also used the occasion to take a (slightly disturbing) Instagram photo, which Dotcom recently shared with the world.

“MegaWoz. Great guy & supporter of EFF. EFF is helping to give Mega users their files back. Thanks Woz & EFF,” Dotcom tweeted. Beyond that, Dotcom doesn't give much info on what the two of them discussed, or how long their meeting lasted.

The two of them have a hacker past in common; Wozniak and Steve Jobs took part in some 'less than legal' activities during the early years of their partnership, partly driven (for Woz, at least) by curiosity. It's a little bit harder to make the same argument about Dotcom's earlier dealings with stolen credit cards, regardless of what you think about his current troubles.

We've been covering those troubles since the start, and if you haven't been following the story, maybe it's time you catch up on what's going on, and why Megaupload users are so upset.

I don't see the wrong dotcom did, they simply had a policy like every other file manager service against piracy yet they were the target for the feds because of certain opportunities that could be exploited against megaupload. It's a common pattern when a "bust" is made.

They both look pretty happy. Homo talk. haha But on a serious note. That's cool I wonder what else they talked about.

Maybe this is why most hackers are overweight. They never exercise...they never get any sun...they just sit in their basement all day and try to figure out how to steal someone's personal information.

That's crackers. Hackers usually do more productive stuff, look at John Carmack, building rockets and s___.

Kind of disappointing that Woz would associate with a criminal/snitch like that. Kimble should be in prison for life after all of the millions he has stolen and stuff he has done...

Maybe Woz sees the wider picture. Maybe he sees a guy trying to get the fair trial he is being denied, and maybe he sympathises with the fact that he's being persecuted for the actions of his users, despite doing everything asked of him to protect the rights of copyright holders.

Maybe he also sees the irony that while some people used MegaUpload to "steal" copyrighted content (you know, in the "I didn't actually steal something" sense), the FBI literally stole user's data from a data centre, refused to give it back, and that this is somehow considered OK because it's the government that stole it.

Then again, Woz may just like hanging out with the guy.

Also, why should he spend a life term in prison? If people spend more time in jail for copyright infringement than he would for murder, maybe the justice system needs to re-think it's priorities.

You need to go back and look at this guys past history, look at his conviction for the largest insider trading in German history. Check out how he sold out ALL of his fellow hackers to the feds for probation.

I'm not really speaking of this "MegaUpload" issue, he's a scumbag, and always has been.

Why are they all weird and purpleish?

It's apparently an "Instagram" picture, they think it's cool to add some worthless effects to all the photos you take with it. ::

Is Woz really that short, or is Kim Dotcom actually a giant?

varying reports put his height at 6-foot-4 to 6-foot-7
