Leaked image shows Windows Phone 8 live lockscreen

A new image that was leaked to a Nokia fan site shows a live lockscreen feature that will purportedly be coming to Windows Phone 8 devices.

An image obtained by Nokia Innovation shows a lockscreen that can be customized to let applications provide live information, such as an ESPN lockscreen that shows score updates for NFL games. The image, seen above, shows three live lockscreens: the aforementioned ESPN lockscreen, a Bing lockscreen and a USA Today lockscreen. It's not known if the lockscreens will be integrated with apps or if they will be separate downloads for Windows Phone 8 devices.

The new lockscreen could tie in with other features of the new operating system, which is said to emphasize "Live Apps," according to leaked promotional materials. Those marketing materials show a similar gesture system to Windows 8, as users can swipe from one side of the screen "to explore Live Apps."

Microsoft is hosting a launch event for Windows Phone 8 in San Francisco on Monday. European launch events will also take place the same day.

Neowin, please update your WIn+Phone=+8 image with the new Windows logo. The old Winlogo looks so dated now since Win8 came out

Love this idea, and how someone else has added to it in that a swipe to the left would reveal a different screen with different live info. A swipe to the right is ruled out as that is for the kids corner thingy (when enabled).

ya'll can have yer windows phones and yer metro ui's,
android/ios are the true smartphone desktop and windows 8 would be better off without metro

So I can watch my Dolphins win on TV and my phone?
Woo!

...I'm overreaching aren't I? =/

My Pats will make sure that doesn't happen... twice a year. You guys are looking good though, most underrated team for sure.

the sports score seems really handy. the news app showing random pictures... not so handy

Just how it happens I guess. Some developers have great ideas and some don't. In the end the better apps will do better. And not every feature works well for every app too...

A lock screen that shows application specific updates like football scores ! That is SWEEEET!
I love it. I hope the leaks stop coming because it always dampens down the value of the announcement and then the press proclaim all the new features to be boring because they have already leaked!

wow I really want to switch from android.I love my s3 and my gnex but windows 8 and wp8 and Xbox will just be perfect for me.

This needs to come to win 8 os.
I agree. Now that this is possible, it should be a matter of time before someone makes an app that lets us pick a folder or set of images to rotate through.

I have a few that I manually rotate through on my Focus, I'd love to see it change daily... same with Win8 on my tablet.

Just what we need. More over information.

Use a static screen then? Oh you mean that because you don't want it no one should, ok then...

In your logic no one should voice an opinion. Stop being so defensive.

And in your logic no one should have choice or options if you don't personally want to take advantage of it... Stop being so closed minded...

I doubt this is real. If it is, this freakin rocks. I doubt it's authenticity due to there being the OLD WINDOWS flag. This is a render of a Windows Phone 8 device, why use the old logo and not the new one?

ALSO, it's dated 2011?!

I think this is just some super awesome user created content.

Yes, it's dated 2011... but I don't think that date actually exists. It's hard to read the day, but for it to be a Monday it would have to be September 26th... and I don't think that is a 26.

So now you can have an app as a lockscreen. I would like a wallpaper of the day app which I guess is like the bing one but just a few apps to rival it.

That's what dreams are made of.

Lock Screen notifications are linked to Live Tiles, so this may very well come with Windows Phone 7.8 - if its a feature at all

Yes, it's probably a simple push notification. For Live Tiles, you can send a push notification that specifies an image... they just need to add a new parameter to specify an image large enough. That would be simple for them to implement, simple for developers to implement, and backwards compatible.

I like the idea, but I have a feeling it could lead the way for unwanted ads showing up in my Lumia 920's screen :-/

Then get rid of the offending app or just show a static picture as always. The power is in YOUR hands!

Fixed that for ya.

Hahah! Fair enough. That even got a Like from me. But it's working out much better for me than my Windows Phone 7.5 phone did I just suspect that they may have fixed most of my niggles in Windows Phone 8, but we'll see. I'll probably wait until that and the new Windows experience have matured and evolved more, before I go back to Microsoft's ecosystem, anyway.

Its good to see someone with an iPhone sound so much more cool than most. In the end these are just phones, may as well get what suits you at the time.

Thats pretty cool, nice to know the WP8 release might still have a cpl of hidden features up its sleeve.

I assumed there would be...

This could be pretty cool. Imagine if you had several of these live apps (full screen) on your lock screen, and you can slide left or right to switch between them, or slide up to unlock.

Good reason for the SDK to be unavailable at the moment, although I image they are also trying to encourage continued development on WP7.x apps.

Well...if you put most of your apps on the lockscreen...why lock the phone then?

No chance of 7.8 getting this then....

Like pretty much every other new feature? 7.8 is just a new home screen and a couple scraps that don't take much work to implement.

7.8 has things that don't take much hassle to make it work on CE kernel.

I think 7.8 will be getting this feature. The above image shows the older logo on the device.

Could just be a Photoshop mistake... We'll just have to see. I do expect features that are not hardware dependent to come to 7.8, so maybe we will see this hopefully.
