Leaked iPad 5 rear panel confirms iPad mini-like design?

Another day, another iPad 5 leak. The upcoming tablet from the Californian company has seen another sighting in the form of a component purporting to be a legitimate rear panel.

Tactus, the source that recently brought us a potential rear shell for a rumoured budget iPhone, offers up an image that looks rather like the iPad mini-style shell all the rumours have been pointing towards:

With no measure of scale to this image or older component to compare it against, it's difficult to appreciate the leaked part. Although, given the placement and relative size of the volume button mechanism on the right of the image, the shell could fit a device that strongly resembles an iPad mini, incorporating the Retina display from a full-sized iPad.

The source offers some opinion-based insight on the dimensions of the upcoming tablet:

Everything's slimming down even more with every leak and rumour, I even think with the use of the IZGO display, Apple will be able to use a much slimmer LED backlight. I'm inclined to think the iPad 5 will shape up to be just 7.2mm thick.

Whilst the validity of this claim or even the above image cannot be verified at this point, given the specificity of the measurement and the fact the site have delivered two reasonably believable parts in quick succession, you might be inclined to believe it.

The post continues to speculate that the iPad 5 will feature the 8MP camera seen in the iPhone 5 and storage options ranging up to 128GB.

I think they are very smart to make a form factor close to as thin and light as the mini. However, I can see many more people (myself included) probably more interested in the iPad mini with retina display.

If the weight difference turns out to be negligible I'd probably want the larger iPad... but I doubt that will be the case so like you I'm holding out for a retina iPad Mini as my next tablet upgrade. Not sure if that will happen this year or not...

I would expect a dramatic reduction in thickness as well as weight, along the lines of the Nexus 10. If they did that, I'd opt for the full size iPad. Since they're almost definitely releasing a retina mini, I'll probably go that route since Love my 1st gen mini so much. A retina display would make it perfect.

N10 is the least they have to reach in terms of weight to not look bad while Sonys Xperia Tablet Z will be the 10"-benchmark to beat once released (495g, 6.9mm).

The company's are loosing their mind. To generate more and more profit they make new ipads/iphones every year. They launch a new IPhone today 5 days later rumors or casings, parts etc. about the next one is all over the place. People can't enjoy their new bought products because there is no chance/time to enjoy it. back in the early days we could buy a mobile phone or TV and could enjoy it for years. We are actually all working for those company's.

Yes yes I know you can say 'no one is forcing you to buy the new version' that statement does not work in real life, everyone wants the new version.

Huh? Most people complain that Apple doesn't update their products enough. One new model in each major product line is a very low turnover rate compared to other companies in the market.

Always wanting the latest and greatest is your problem, not theirs. With phones almost everyone in the US is on a 2-year contract cycle anyway.

WHAT?? Umm no. I bought the ipad2 when the 3 came out and got it for 400$. I want value not just the newest thing. So do many people as the ipad2 is still selling well. Sounds like you just have buyers remorse or envy for others that have more disposable income than you.

I'm honestly exited to see these enhancements. I'm honestly waiting til WWDC 13' til I start making purchases. Okay, I'm going for the iPhone 5 til then. But, honestly, I've been waiting to this day for them to reach 128GB already, they've been almost a decade due for that.

Besides being the biggest Apple fanboy BS you're going to pay through the nose for that much storage. Apple now charges $100 for each 'upgrade' (16GB $499> +$100 for 32GB > +$100 for 64GB > +$100 for 128GB). Obviously they price the thing so they sell the most of the largest model.

So you pay $499 for an iPod with a larger screen and $300 for 112GB of storage which will cost them less than $40 and I believe Apple can produce, ship and sell 4 iPads for each one sold. Love how Apple keeps ripping of the hordes and get away with it.

Besides being a a jack***, we all know that every Hard, Flash, or Solid State Drive will have a part of the memory consumed for various systematic reasons.

I'm getting my upgrade through Sprint in which I'm trading in my iPhone 4 for it because I'm a developer, I have some updates to attend to, plus the performance has degraded highly.

I also watch movies, I also go on Skype, Tango, and I'm also a godd*** Web Developer. It's my choice.

Love how Android and Windows Phone fanboys keep trying to put us down.

Btw, I have money, so I can afford it. I don't worry about what other people have unless it's stressing them.

Yeah... I've completely exited the Apple world too.

Thank you.

I have a feeling that was a mistaken update on the site. OR NOT!

I'm actually in need of both iOS devices having 128GB, I have too much media.

My goodness, I hate Press updates. First time I ever fell behind on Apple updates.

I can't exactly keep up with Android because there's too many phones.

They already have 128GB models:

Of course they're pretty expensive. I would hope that the next generation will start at 32GB for the base model.

Keep dreaming. Sorry, I just doubt they will get rid of 16GB as the starting storage for a few more generations. But I would love it if they did!

My first iOS devices were all 32GB but now they are all 16GB because I just can't afford it. With iTunes Match and Google Music (as well as other "cloud"/streaming services for music) I don't really need to have 32GB anymore.

It was thanks to iTunes' Cloud service that made me happy. But there are times where I won't be online, so I do need the space for what I already have on my Mac!

The same, my son loves to see movies every now and then, away from home or such, so the ipad is just perfect

You do web development on an ipad? Really? k.

You're even more ignorant for not even considering that I have to do responsive web design on different-sized devices. And yea, I CAN on an iPad.

Obtuse way of saying you test your designs on an ipad...just like every other competent designer/developer. You do the actual work on a real PC.

Your aggressive approach is telling.

Acute way of assuming I don't know know how to make use of my assets.

Sure give us a screenshot of your development environment on your ipad. I'm genuinely intrigued.

All the rumors/leaks so far seem to point to the same aspect ratio (4:3) but with reduced side bezels, just like the iPad Mini.

It really wouldn't make sense for Apple to change that at this point. With the one exception of watching 16:9 movies, the 4:3 form factor works pretty well.
