Lenovo is all geared up to launch its Lenovo ThinkPad W700ds Workstation at the CES Expo this January.

The most interesting thing about this workstation is that it features a dual screen display, hence the 'ds' in its product name(short for 'dual screen'). The workstation comes with a dual screen display - The main screen is 17 inches and the secondary screen is 10.6 inches.

Lenovo is also offering users the option of selecting the less expensive Intel Core 2 Quad Processor (2.66GHz built on the newer 45-nanometer manufacturing process) instead of the Intel Core 2 Extreme along with the dual screen display.

Lenovo's goal is to target those laptop users who usually work with multiple displays - the laptop screen being the main display and an external monitor being the secondary display. eWeek reports that the price is currently about $2,500 and the addition of second display will add about $500 to the base cost. An official starting price has not been set yet.

eWeek was lucky enough to get hands on this dual screen workstation and has posted some in-house photos.

Other features of this workstation includes Nvidia Quadro FX 3700M graphics processor, 8GB of DDR3 RAM, dual integrated hard disk drives and 2 to 3.5 hours of battery life.

CES is already grabbing attention with news such as Windows 7 beta, 512GB SSD by Toshiba and now Lenovo joins the hit-list with its dual screen workstation.

Um, I looked at the pictures and, well, all I can say is WTF?! Can anyone actually think of a use for that configuration?

Yes lots, have you ever used more 1 screen? Handy toolbar, referencing, email list, msn etc .

Yes, I'm using four for my desktop right now. But that little dinky flapjack of a second screen wouldn't hold my widgets.

Not me.

If I am going to have multiple displays (and I do at home and work) I am going to get matching sizes and I sure as hell ain't settling for some dinky 17-inch or unusable 10-inch ones. Of course it is a laptop and the photoshop application is about the only reason that makes sense.

However ... gotta be one of the stupidest things I have ever seen. And after this last election ... that's saying a lot!

+1

Also, it's so big and bulky (not to mention down right horrendous to look at) you might as well just haul your desktop around in a box with two monitors. Two monitors are great ... but this is NOT the way to "implement" it. lol

Lousy implementation. And ugly as well.

On this we can agree on!

Looks like Christmas IS the season of miracles.

Why not just get a normal notebook and a nice big external display?

This is not meant to look nice, stick with your Mac if you want a pretty laptop, its purpose like its predecessor is to deliver results with effectiveness and speed. It is built to offer maximum efficiency , like using Photoshop,AutoCAD, simulation where raw power (Quad Core and Quadro) and an extra screen that can be easily detached, attached and stored helps.

Where's the other half of the second monitor

Ok, nice try Lenovo, but next time build a laptop that actually has two full monitors on it, not one-and-a-half.
Have to give them credit for trying, though.

No we don't.

To quote a famous master "Do or do not. There is no try."

Its better to do the right thing badly than the wrong thing well.

This will greatly benefit photo and video editors. Samsung has already implemented something like this with their 2263DX 22" LCD monitor. Just because it doesn't look like it'll be of any use to you doesn't mean it's completely useless.

the more screen space the better i say

Needs another on the other side.

It would also be pretty good for gaming IMO. One screen dedicated to all the action and the side screen could be all the HUD stuff.

of course theres no games out there that support this except world in conflict.

the extra screen is not entirely useless, but it would be better if there was another for the other side.

Nice, but how strong is it?
#11 PureLegend on 22 Dec 2008 - 10:31
Very nice. Looks strong and durable, and the second screen will be useful for other information.

I wonder how long the batteries last on a desktop replacement like that .
