Lumia 520 drops to $39.99 off-contract (but only for today)

Alongside its new flagship, the Nokia Lumia 930, Microsoft has launched two further Windows Phone 8.1 devices this year. The Lumia 630 is an affordable and likeable Windows Phone, but not a perfect one, while the even cheaper Lumia 530 went on sale earlier this month

But as it rolls out new handsets, one of its older low-cost devices is continuing to sell well. The Lumia 520 was first announced almost a year and a half ago at Mobile World Congress 2013, but it's still on sale today, and it's even more affordable than the company's latest devices. As WPCentral reports, Amazon is now selling the Lumia 520 on AT&T for just $39.99 off-contract.

That low price is temporary, though - it is being offered under Amazon's 'Gold Box' promotion for today only, so don't waste any time if you're considering picking one up. The last time the 520's price dropped as low as this was eight months ago, shortly before Christmas.

The Lumia 520 features a dual-core 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 processor and 512MB of RAM and 8GB of onboard storage, along with a microSD card slot. A 5MP rear camera is included, although there is no flash and no front-facing camera. Despite these limitations, the Lumia 520 scored very highly when we reviewed it last year, becoming one of our favorite smartphones ever.

Just bought my first Windows Phone. Perfect as an MP3 player, where I don't have to be worried about it dropping or being stolen :)

Only if you attack others while claiming WP is the greatest and "modern" etc..

Windows Phone was once targeted towards the high end. So sad that Microsoft has to now resort to firesales in order to move them out. There's no obvious sign that this approach is even working being that the WP market share is declining in both the U.S. and Europe.

With no more license fee and no profit to be made on the hardware for Microsoft, I doubt WP will be around by 2018.

That's how much I paid for mines. I got it a while ago on a one-day sale. I'm using it to go camping this weekend so I don't ruin my 1520. :D

I did to. I am on Verizon as well but good to have another platform around. I have used WP before and eh....at the most this will, for now, be a good test/media player phone. Got the trial of amazon prime, free shipping, and should be here Friday. :)

I like technology and while I may not use my Apple, and my Lumia I just ordered, products as much as others, I like to stay as informed as possible about the competition.

Except no windows device

But hey, its not like they count as competition right now anyway.

I try to keep devices from several platforms around, but its not always feasible cost wise. Linux is always easy though!

I have plenty of Windows devices. Just didnt list them as I thought it was a given. :)

Not really a given around here.

Sadly no. T-Mobile/AT&T use GSM while Sprint/Verizon use CDMA which are incompatible unless your phone supports both, which this does not. If it did I'd jump on this in a heartbeat to jump on Verizon since T-Mobile's service is horrid in my area and WiFi Calling is extremely unreliable..

As far as I know, Verizon never got a 5xx series Lumia device.

Will this phone work on the Verizon network by any chance? (Wishful thinking)

No, but great price for a media/mp3 player tho. Especially with an SD card slot. I ordered one even tho I am on Verizon.

This makes is an awesome offline navigation / mp3 player, with blu-tooth connectivity without calling functionality. This seems like the same sale they did right before Christmas.
