Macworld Buzz: Will Mac Pros Move To Eight Cores?

Some analysts are predicting that Apple Computer may announce a Mac desktop that sports eight processors at the Macworld Expo next week. Industry watchers say Apple is sure to update its line of desktops and laptops. Will the company go quad-core? Some analysts say it might even work in two quad-core processors to give a Mac desktop the power of eight processors.

"I wouldn't be surprised if they start shipping Mac Pros with eight cores," said John Welch, a Unix/open source administrator at Kansas City Life Insurance and a Mac industry analyst who will be speaking at MacWorld Expo 2007. "They could have two quad cores in them. They've got the basic architecture now. They can do this. It would be really cool. You never get in trouble for releasing a faster computer."

Right now, the Mac Pro is running a dual-core Intel Xeon processor. An upgrade could be in the works since Intel is working on quad-core processors. Bob LeVitus, a tech columnist for the Houston Chronicle and a speaker at MacWorld Expo, also says he wouldn't be surprised if the next generation of the Mac Pro had two quad-core processors.

whoa zomfg snakes on a plane 8 CORES???

thats great news... now i can type my essays 8 times faster!!!!!!

honestly there arent that many people in the world who will need this power.... atleast not yet. but then again, there are only a few amount of people who will use this kind of power AND afford it at the same time.

The people who need this type of power are either Movie studios, animation studios or some publishers for heavy duty PDF distilling

exactly. not normal everyday people.

I'm just wondering when they'll start using the AMD chips as described on the homepage once. Then prolly, there will be a choice of 4core cpu or 8core (2x4) which'll be something. Let Jobs decide...

edit: I think it would be best for Leopard to have it with 8 and Tiger with 4 but thats my opinion.

I doubt Apple will ever use AMD, I think Apple signed an exclusivity contract to use and only use Intel chips. Even if I am wrong, I think Apple will still probably prefer Intel, as they are currently the market leaders and their offerings are walking all over what AMD has, so Apple is probably just happy to stick with Intel.

Well f&#%ing duh. Of course you can say the NEXT-GENERATION Mac Pro will have eight cores. I don't think anyone's debating that. I think the talk here is if it will debut at Macworld this monday.

On that point, in my opinion, no. With Leopard, iPod stuff, etc.. there's just no reason for them to rush into an eight-core Mac Pro at this Macworld. But, I would be quite surprised if we DIDN'T see one at WWDC this year.

This will be usable by the .05% of a < 6% market share that uses Macs for genetic and chemical modeling... What they need to announce is a version of OS X that comes with a USB TPM dongle so you can just go buy the operating system and install it on the hardware of YOUR choice. I don't want my mom picking out my clothes, and I don't want Apple picking out my computer hardware... :P

Where have you been living? - in a cave  Apple Computer is a HARDWARE company that bundles OS X with their hardware ( the dongle )- thats where the money is made, not by trying to sell easily pirated software

I hate this mac speculation crap. Especially when it's this obvious.

Of course they're going to do it. Basically, this says Newsflash: PC Manufaturer to use new CPUs.

Dell already has 8 core systems, I'm sure HP will soon as well (I didn't see any on HPs site, but they may already have them). Apple will do it, of course (And everyone will act like they did it better, somehow, naturally)...Why waste a spot on the front page with this crap?
