ATI said that its 8500 card is the "worlds fastest and with the most technologically advanced graphics chip" will have some kind of support for new Athlon XP processor 1800+.

We even saw some interesting details about this Athlon XP processor 1800+. The processor has some kind of new feature called Quantispeed that is designed to provide the extra performance needed for "ultimate computing experience". ATI describes Athlon XP as processor that combines "outstanding performance and support for the world's most popular software. "

We know that ATI's RADEON 8500 has some potential (275 MHz/ 275 MHz vs. 240 MHz / 250 MHz TI 500 not to mention some other features), and both companies like the harmony of these two products together since the "Radeon 8500 enhances the performance of AMD's latest Athlon".

"The problem right now is Intel is getting some momentum back with their 2 gigahertz Pentium 4 chip," said Needham & Co. analyst Dan Scovel. "They stole the crown back after a six-month hiatus."

AMD has been, for several months now, stressing to reporters and analysts that the clock speed of a microprocessor, the brains of PC, is not the last word on overall performance. There are benchmark tests that have been done showing AMD's Athlon -- running at a slower clock speed -- outperforms Intel's Pentium 4 chip on certain tasks.

Some wonder, though, whether it's too little too late.

"If you're going to get serious about weighing price performance, I think it's a valid point that AMD is making," Scovel said. "But beating the drum at this point is kind of like closing the door after the horse has left the barn."
