Q: What changed between WinZip 8.1 Beta 1 (build 4180) and Beta 2 (build 4285)?
A: The changes in WinZip 8.1 Beta 2 include the following:

In Beta 1, WinZip would sometimes misidentify a split Zip file that had been copied to diskettes as a spanned Zip file. The program logic used to determine whether a multi-disk Zip file is split or spanned has been improved, and this should no longer be a problem.

Support for filenames containing multi-byte character set (MBCS) characters used with Asian languages such as Japanese, Chinese, and Korean has been improved.

Miscellaneous bug fixes and minor enhancements, including:

The dialog that displays the archive types with which WinZip can be associated has been enlarged so that all file types can be seen without scrolling.

In WinZip's setup wizard, the dialog in which the installation folder is chosen now has a Browse button.

Under Windows 98, logging off and then back on again would result in the Quick Pick taskbar tray icon not restarting. This has been corrected.

During multi-file extracts, warning dialogs in some cases were hidden behind the active program's window, but there was no taskbar button allowing the user to return to WinZip. This has been corrected.

Q: What's in the WinZip 8.1 beta, and how do I get a copy?
A: For complete information about new features and how to download the software, see the web page http://www.winzip.com/betawz.cgi

Q: What will the upgrade cost?
A: As with all WinZip upgrades for the last ten years, all registered users of earlier English language versions of WinZip will be able to download a FREE upgrade to WinZip 8.1.

Q: Will you send another message when WinZip 8.1 is released?
A: Yes - we'll send messages both for any additional beta versions and for the final release of WinZip 8.1.

Q: Will the beta version recognize me as a registered user?
A: Yes - if you install the beta version on top of a registered version of an earlier version of WinZip, the beta version will not display a "registration reminder" prompt.

Q: What are the system requirements for the WinZip 8.1 beta release?
A: This beta version of WinZip 8.1 requires Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows NT 4.0, Windows 2000, Windows Me, or Windows XP.

Q: What else should I know?
A: Please keep in mind that WinZip 8.1 is still a pre-release beta test version, and has not experienced the same level of testing as the current WinZip 8.0 release. If you are not familiar with WinZip, or are not comfortable with beta software, then we recommend that you not download the pre-release version, and instead use the release version.
