Gateway has compiled a list of tips to help people to protect their computers, programs, and data at home and at work.

And here is the "gateway" to the top ten security tips:

1. Invest in anti-virus software for protection against email, file-sharing, and Internet viruses. Update this application regularly using "live update" to download the latest version from the Internet -- keeping your system safe from new viruses as they're developed.

2. Prepare for system crashes by creating an emergency boot disk by following these steps -- click on Start/Settings/Control Panel/Add-Remove Programs/Start-up Disk.

3. To keep your hard disk free of error and prevent a hard drive crash, periodically run the "ScanDisk" utility within your system tools.

4. Remember to backup/archive important data regularly. Use a separate backup device such as tape drives, zip drives, separate disk storage devices (network attached storage), or backup services over the Internet.

5. Use an electrical surge protector equipped with a phone/modem line in and out in case of power interruptions, outages or emergency situations.

6. If you're in a network of multiple computers that is connected to the Internet, a router (starting below $90) will protect all computers in the network from unwanted visitors by hiding the "addresses" of individual computers.

7. For individual computers connecting to the Internet, prevent access from uninvited guests with personal firewall software, particularly if you have an 'always-on' Internet connection.

8. Use "File and Printer Sharing" features to give access to only those family members or business colleagues who need to see specific folders.

9. Keep track of logins and passwords for your personal system and when visiting Web sites online, don't make them the same and never share them.

10. When shopping online, make sure to purchase from a site that uses SSL (Secured Sockets Layer) to make sure that your credit card information is safe."
