Gateway, Inc. today will deliver its 25 millionth PC, 16 years after the company was founded in a Sioux City, Iowa, farmhouse. Quentin and Theresa Vasconcellos of Glendale, Ariz., who ordered the Gateway 500X PC last week at a Phoenix-area Gateway store, will receive the PC free of charge today in honor of the sales milestone.
"Gateway today is becoming the leading provider of one-stop technology for consumers and small businesses," said Gateway Chairman and CEO Ted Waitt. "Over the past 16 years this industry has changed a lot, but one thing that hasn't changed is that our customers are the heart of Gateway. Millions of people, like the Vasconcellos family, trust Gateway to understand their technology needs and provide personalized solutions."
The Vasconcellos family ordered the Gateway 500X PC along with Gateway Photo:)Ware(TM) and Gateway Music:)Ware(TM) packages featuring hardware, software and Gateway training to help them learn how to take digital photographs and record digital music. In addition to covering the cost of the system the family ordered, Gateway will give them two MP3 players, a scanner, special software bundles and a $200 gift certificate for future software or training purchases.
Theresa Vasconcellos had purchased the PC for her daughters, who are preparing for college and needed a new computer.
Gateway officials, including regional vice president Judy Quye, will deliver the 25 millionth system to the Vasconcellos home today and set it up for the family.
Gateway went into business in 1985, first as a direct seller of PCs by telephone only. Today, the company offers a comprehensive range of technology products and solutions to consumers and businesses through 296 Gateway stores, an award-winning Web site, the first established by a national PC brand -- and its original phone sales channel (1-800-Gateway).
Gateway stores, introduced in 1996, are a unique blend of product showroom, personalized service center and learning facility. Most of the 296 Gateway stores offer not only the latest technology solutions and services, but also broadband Internet access, in-home wireless network installation and other services. Gateway stores also are a place in the community where people can come to learn about how to improve the quality of life through technology -- to try out new technology in a relaxed setting, participate in free learning clinics, get free advice, access the Internet at broadband speed, and more.
