Despite talk about consolidation of the memory business, the lengthy talks between Micron and Hynix appear to be proceeding very slowly, while it also appears that PC sales are not as high as many had anticipated.
Anecdotal reports from UK distributors and dealers suggest that piles of unsold kit are beginning to accumulate in warehouses, although some hope that price cuts and new Intel introductionsnext week will spur demand.
128MB PC266 DIMMs are selling for around €50, while 256MB sticks cost closer to €90. Supplies of DDR 333 appear to have improved with one site listing an Apacer PC333 DIMM at €108.
DRAM Exchange estimates that SDRAM still hogs the market, holding about 64 per cent share, while DDR holds 30 per cent. RDRAM accounts for the rest of memory shipped for PCs, it said.
