Apple Computer is expanding its retail store strategy as it considers new ways to draw Windows users to the Mac, according to sources close to the company's plans.
The Cupertino, Calif.-based company is considering a number of in-store demonstrations to attract potential PC users, the sources said. One strategy under consideration would involve bringing Windows PCs into the stores, where customers could presumably be shown the advantages of Macs.
If the proposal is adopted, PCs from one or more manufacturers would be compared with Macs, the sources said. Apple also plans to run Connectix VirtualPC--emulation software for running Windows on Macs--on store demo units.
This too would be part of the "conversion" strategy, showing potential PC customers that they could continue using current Windows software on their new Macs.
"There's this pervading perception of the Mac as being this alien, niche product," said Technology Business Research analyst Tim Deal.
"If you can actually show PC users it's not as alien, not as different as they might think it is--something the Apple stores already are good at doing--certainly it's going to increase sales."
"What future versions of Night's Edge will hopefully offer:
Unique playmodes not seen in any other game.
As many as 6 firing modes per gun.
Wide variety in weapons, armor, cybernetic enhancements and other gear.
A huge proposed equipment list.
Weapon attachments, such as silencers, flashlights, laser sights, scopes, and red-dot sights.
Advanced player preferences.
Additional server options to facilitate tournaments and competitions or even control the level of technology available.
The ability for players to vote.
Plans to include customizable character attributes.
The full equipment list contains over 70 distinct weapons, 7 grenade types, 6 kinds of explosives and mines, 5 available attachments/options for weapons, 19 kinds of ammunition, 4 different armor types available for 4 areas of the body, 28 pieces of gear, and 48 cybernetic enhancements. We'll be starting small and adding as the mod progresses.
Our main focus at the beginning will be on 2 or 3 of our additional playmodes, though we hope to implement over 6 in the end. If possible, each map will support multiple playmodes by being versatile and adaptive.
Inventory can be manipulated either through typical next/prev buttons or through a number of powerful menus that let players perform tasks just by clicking the mouse. Although players do move slower the more they are carrying, there is no set limit on weight. Instead, each character has a set number of slots in their inventory, and each piece of equipment can take up either one slot, a fraction of one slot, or several slots.
