ATI Technologies Inc. today continued its commitment to deliver the most advanced, high-quality graphics solutions with the release of a new beta software driver supporting Microsoft® DirectX® 9.0 Release Candidate 0 (RC0) application program interface (API). ATI's new driver, CATALYST(TM) Beta Release Candidate 0 (BRC0), provides the industry's first support for Microsoft DirectX 9.0 and enables end-users to take full advantage of the most current hardware and software features, creating a richer and more immersive 3D graphics experience.

CATALYST™ DX9 BRC0 display drivers are to be used in conjuction with Microsoft's DirectX9 Release Candidate (RC). This driver is currently a Beta Release Candidate (BRC) and is being provided to permit users to experience the most advanced graphics capabilities available. Please keep in mind that this driver is a Beta Release Candidate and may have outstanding bugs at present (Please refer to the errrata notes for known issues).

ATI does NOT recommend installing these drivers in systems used for mission critical operations or where productivity of any kind is a concern. There is a chance that using any Beta Release Candidate software may result in an unstable system.

"Today's beta driver release is further testament to ATI's continued leadership in the graphics industry," said Rick Bergman, Senior Vice President & General Manager, Desktop Business Unit, ATI Technologies Inc. "ATI and Microsoft will continue to work closely together to develop the necessary software resources to help end users enhance their gaming and visual adventure."

"We're delighted that ATI is releasing a driver that works with and benefits from our latest version of DirectX. The combination of DirectX 9.0 and ATI's driver, CATALYST Beta Release Candidate 0, will provide incredible levels of gaming and cinematic realism," said Dean Lester, General Manager Windows Graphics and Gaming Technologies, Microsoft Corporation.

ATI is the first and only accelerated graphics vendor to currently provide game developers and hardware enthusiasts with support for DirectX 9.0 through RADEON(TM) 9700 PRO, RADEON(TM) 9500 PRO, RADEON(TM) 9700 and RADEON(TM) 9500 graphics chips. With products spanning from high-end to the performance mainstream, ATI helps end-users extend the lifespan of their accelerated graphics processors by delivering next-generation performance and features to users, today.

ATI's CATALYST Beta RC 0 driver will be submitted to Microsoft Corp. for Windows' Hardware Quality Labs (WHQL) certification and incorporated into future releases of ATI's CATALYST suite of unified graphics drivers.

In the spirit of delivering visual and cinematic realism, ATI is also releasing four demos - 'Pipedreams,' 'Rendering with Natural Light,' 'Car,' and 'Bear' are the first publicly available content to exercise the advanced performance capabilities of DirectX 9.

now, if we just have DX9 final and some games supporting DX9.0 all would be great. Oh wait, some games just started to fully support DX8.1... I'll guess we'll have to wait then for some real DX9 action

ant doom3 dx9?
Quote this comment #12.1 Posted by vacs on 13 Nov 2002 - 16:14
no, doom3 ain't dx9! John Carmack coded and probably always will code his engines in OpenGL. The only part of doom3 being directx is its input system (--> DirectInput 8.1). Maybe he will upgrade the input code to DX9 some time before the release of the game but doom3 will never be based on Direct3D 9.0 or whatever version...

I think there not much DirectX 9 application going around worth testing..since a lot of the games are not much even DX8 yet.... But it could be interesting to see how DX9 fared against current version.

The Bear demo keeps ending up as a corrupted file, anyone know what it could be?? :'(

I hope that everyone here who has or who will install this RC0 version of DX9.0 is aware that you can't UNINSTALL this version! That means if the final version of DX9.0 comes out in the next few weeks you either need to reinstall your windows or hopefully made a ghost image or used system restore prior installing RC0 DX9.0. I wonder how many unknowing users now will make their windows installation obsolete due to an unsupported beta version of DX9.0 and this thanks to ATI. Is it that important for ATI to be the first supporting DX9.0 although there are no programs or games out making use out of the newest version of DX, neglecting the fact that many users will now screw up their system with beta DirectX drivers... Ok, there is just one program already supporting DX9 and this is 3ds Max 5, but I doubt that any ATI user seriously renders in 3ds max since one can only use GeForce cards effectively in 3ds Max due to their much more optimized drivers...

hmm, i think you are wrong, u can update directX
Quote this comment #17.1 Posted by vacs on 13 Nov 2002 - 21:06
update? yeah, that's nice if the next RC of DX9.0 comes out in 3 weeks. So you just have to wait a few weeks until you maybe can again play your favorite game because RC0 screw it up. My post was actually not meant as a threat, but rather as a warning for some users who might think this is final code...

How can you have -110 posts?
Quote this comment #20.1 Posted by vacs on 13 Nov 2002 - 17:43
don't know. I guess everyone needs to write at least 10 posts a day or you get a minus number

Neobond explains in the BPN section of the forum why pretty much every member of Neowin lost a certain amount of posts. Some just had a very low number, so now they have a negative post count. Looks pretty funny though.

It's a public beta, so you can fill in bug reports to M$. Don't expect a RC0 to run flawlessly on your system!
