Pentium 4 chips to get 800MHz system buses, while Prescott delayed

WE'VE KNOWN FOR some time that the Springdale-G and Springdale-P chipsets might support 667MHz but now Intel has upped the ante by saying it will support Northwood Pentium 4s with an 800MHz front side bus. That changes all the rules of the game and is doubtless a reaction to 800MHz Hypertransport (HT) chips from AMD that will arrive next year.

That has emerged from the latest roadmaps we saw on a rare visit to the Porcupine over the weekend. The 667MHz front side bus for Northwood and Springdale is now dead, and will support DDR 400 memory, in a faster than expected move. Intel also now feels it can produce additional processor speeds for hyperthreading technology introduced last week.

But Prescott has now been shoved back until Q4 of next year. Earlier Intel plans had Prescott in the second half of 2003. While, of course, Q4 is in the second half of 2003, it's not quite the same thing, is it? Next year, the 400MHz system buses for Pentium 4s will completely disappear from the Intel roadmaps and sale pitches.

Q2 is an important time for Intel. It adds the "Canterwood" 800MHz FSB/DDR 400 chipset to its desktop roadmap which will then be its highest performing desktop chipset, supporting 800/533MHz FSBs, dual channel DDR400/333, and ECC memory, Serial ATA, and version 3.0 of AGP 8X.

RESIDENT EVIL Ø (ZERO) INCORPORATES AN ALL-NEW GAME SYSTEM:
 • 2 Main Characters! Employs the new "Partner Zapping" system- Resident Evil Ø features two main characters: Rebecca, a rookie Raccoon City Police Officer who first appeared in the original Resident Evil, and Billy, a framed convict on the run. This new system allows players to follow the adventure of both characters successively by using the 'Zapping' ability. This ability allows players to switch between the two main characters at the blink of an eye. If either character runs out of health, the game is over.
 • Best Graphics Anywhere - Resident Evil Ø boasts the most realistic visuals and gameplay graphics ever! Players will delight as they are engulfed in environments with dancing fire, tablecloths that sway in the wind and glasses of water that move with the motion of a train. Capcom's extreme focus on detail will make this the most bone-chilling chapter in its epic horror series. Each of the game's characters are modeled with a focus on extreme realism as zombies have never looked so mangled, undead beasts more grotesque and playable heroes have never moved or reacted with such human-like responses.
Resident Evil Ø begins in July of 1998 in the suburbs of Raccoon City, a small town located in the Midwest. Several reported incidences of people being eaten by a strange creature have surfaced. The Raccoon city police department viewed the terrible murders as a top priority and quickly decided to send in a special task force, the S.T.A.R.S Bravo team. As the team heads to the scene of the murders, the helicopter that was transporting them begins to have mechanical problems, eventually crashing deep into the forest surrounding Raccoon City. While the Bravo Team was successful in escaping from the crash, they had lost all of their equipment and weapons. As they began to gather their wits, the team saw a shocking image. Before them lay a half-destroyed, over-turned transport truck with corpses of several navy officers that had been gruesomely killed and mangled. Under orders from Commander Enrico, the Bravo Team began investigating the disappearance of Captain Billy Coen, one of the officers who was supposed to be in the over-turned transport yet his remains cannot be found. Little does the Bravo Team know that this investigation is the beginning of a horrific nightmare.

800MHz FSB .... wow~! is the megahertz war now shifted to FSB instead of processor speed?

Wow, I think AMD must be getting a little worried, they sure need to make some headlines for a change.

We'll see if the AMD clawhammer/sledgehammer can equal the performance. They will both have the same memory bandwidth so the processing power will be the thing.

STOP THE MADNESS! AGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG I can't keep up!! LOL....... Nice thing about AMD and Intel popping up new chips all the time, the "older" chips get CHEAP quick! Competition, it's good for everyone!

I don't think that Intel wants the 800MHz FSB P4 to compete with the Hammer CPU. Intel just want to be sure that their P4s are faster then the upcoming Barton, although no one really knows if the Barton performance is really that much better than the one of an Athlon XP. The first clawhammers will probably beat the P4 800MHz FSB... Therefore the real Hammer competitor will be the Prescott CPU (although Intel doesn't officially confirm this) with its 0.09 micron core (4-5GHz will be possible with ease), HT2 support, better L2-3 caches and the maybe mysterious yamhill technology about which no one really knows what it is... Prescott delayed? I guess a delay of 1 quarter is well within the normal range on today's PC market. As long as the delay doesn't increase to a year or so, Intel will be on the safe side. This delay even allows Intel to see how good the hammer will perform and then making changes to the Prescott as needed...

800 omfg how cool btw cool new logo whats the ht for hyper transport or hyper threading

HT = HyperThreading.

it probably runs at 100mhz and they say its 800mhz octa pumped
#7.1 vacs on 18 Nov 2002 - 15:23
no, of course it's 200mhz quad-pumped. They already had their upcoming Prescott running at 166 quad-pumped (effective 666MHz) and they now just upped it a little bit more than anyone could have expected...
Intel will also introduce hyperthreaded 2.40GHz, 2.60GHz P4s, and 2.80GHz Pentium 4s in Q2 of next year, as well as the 3.06GHz CPU it introduced last year and a 3GHz and a 3.20GHz hyperthreaded Pentium 4. µ
