- 5 GB for 200 bucks? Isn't a RioRiot $200 for 20 GB?
Everything coming from Apple is overpriced.
And you can't replace the battery. I've never seen a battery that would take an infinate number of recharges.
I think you are nuts if you buy this!
(I do like the interface and the model though
ohh... ipod...pretty)

- If you need that many tunes on an iPod, you must really hate each tune...

- hmmm unlike the rioriot, the ipod has a firewire port....so no waiting all nite for your songs to get onto the mp3 player...the more expensive mp3 players have firewire ports...while the cheaper ones like the rio riot only have a usb port...

- how is 300$ cheaper than 200$?!
-

- Because the 20 gig ipod costs $500 whereas the 20 gig Zen is $300 (after a $50 however). But still cheaper, about the same size, and includes a firewire port too.

- i think he means doller per gb. thats 200 for 5 and its refurbished. you can get a new zen for 300 and get 20gb. apple really needs to reduce their prices (so i can get one
) if not, hopefully bantams player will not be too expensive. Their new player will be the size of an ipod, with fm, and 5gb. If its less than 300, im sold

- um, well, i guess every person that owns one and every review in the world is wrong, because just about everyone agrees that the iPod is the best mp3 player, PERIOD

- I still think it is the best mp3 player in the world.

- sometimes there is a news story that changes my mind about whether or not people on neowin know how to read properly. Now for all you idiots that are still waiting on your hooked on phonics package let me clarify a few things right from the jump. Rioriot = ugly as sin block of plastic, stores 400 albums worth of music, includes firewire port ipod = sweet piece of kit, stores 5 gb worth of music or works as a boot enabledfirewire hard drive, firewire as standard, hd can be upgraded by user (although apple wont tell you that) nomad zen = looks suspiciously along the same lines as an ipod, stores 10gb of data and music, includes firewire. now for those of you that are still stuck on stupid let me explain what all of that means: 1. the rioriot is a mp3 player 2. you can install jag onto the ipod and run it off of that as an external backup, you can copy files to the ipod and use it as a big ass cd/rw, you can use the ipod as a standard mp3 player, you can upgrade the firmware on the 5gb ipod and use the pda functions on it then get a fujitsu 60gb slimline laptop harddrive and slap that in for another 250, thus bringing the entire price up to 450 3. you can use the nomad zen as a mp3 player or giant 10gb cd/rw now do you actually see why the ipod for 199 would be the better option? some of you lot are thick, you should read the story and then read about ipods if you have no fscking clue before you post bullshit.

- The IPOD is a MP3 player!! Get that through your thick skull!
Umm..true. I agree that the iPOD is the best MP3 player around as far as product is concerned. But the price still isn't worth it.
Sure you can use it as an external hard drive. But who would fill that extremely high priced external harddrive with an Operating system???? That is what an "internal" harddrive is for.
If it were cheaper, and the Windows version didn't cost more, I would so get it.

- yes and what happens if you cant boot off your internal hard drive but still want to save your data? Oh right! You can hook up your ipod, boot into jag and save your stuff. It's not the point of who wants to fill the hard drive with an operating system, its the fact that you can.

- I'm with WK on this one. Currently I have my OSX partition on my ipod waiting to be copied over to my ibook (when I buy it here in the next month or two). The pod saved me so much time. Without it I would have had to redownload and reinstall every app, then go through and redo the prefs. Then don't mention all the icons and little customizations I had done to OSX. I bought the newer 10gb pod and it was easily worth the money. There is no other mp3 player that even comes close to the looks and functionality of an ipod. The game is over, and the ipod wins in a runaway.

- Wicked - u sure about the 60GB fujitsu?
that would be damn sweet...
But i know the Toshiba HDs Apple are using are extremly thin (and expensive - that's why the pods costs so much btw), it's not the same size as laptop HDs, but even smaller - U say fujitsu got something in the same size with greater capacity?

- Actually WickedKitten, the Nomad Zen is 20gb. I go for functionality. Looks come second, I personaly don't care what the IPOD looks like, it's $200 for the 5gb version. Not good at all.

From news on DealNews and MacMinute, it appears that Apple is offering factory-refurbished 5GB iPods for US$199, from the "Special Deals" section of the online Apple Store.
The page notes that the iPod is the model with the "original touch wheel" and it's the original 5Gb iPOD for Mac, and comes with Headphones (new earbud-style), Apple iPod Power Adapter, Apple FireWire Cable (2m), and CD with iTunes (not sure if it's the current release but you can always download it!) and comes with a One Year Limited Warranty.
So if you want to get on the bandwagon and grab an original Mac iPod for a rock bottom price, go to the Apple store where you will find ordering details... I presume that if they are getting rid of the 5Gb iPod (reduce inventory, that sort of thing), they are planning on "upgrading" the iPod, as one poster on our forums points out...
Silvorgold says... ... the 5 gig ipod probably WILL get discontinued in january at MWSF.
A colour screen iPod would be really neat...One of my friends says theres going to be some sweet new features on the new ipods in january... even tho he wasnt told what features what would be featured, but there will be price decreases for sure, possibility of another 20 gig model to be added, and a model higher than 20 gigs...
Theres also been rumors of a color screen ipod.. but i doubt it...
Although the FTP server was intended for use by Microsoft's product support organization, marketing staff appeared to be using the server, unaware that it was accessible from the Internet, said Russ Cooper, "surgeon general" at security services provider TruSecure.
"They probably thought they were sharing the files just with other Microsoft people and that it was a protected server," Cooper said.
A Microsoft spokeswoman said the company has disabled downloads from the PSS Support server "to improve the privacy protections on the site." The server's outgoing file directory will be brought back online after a review of its security architecture demonstrates that customers' information is protected, she said.
Among the many people who stumbled upon the open FTP server was Andreas Marx, a virus researcher with GEGA IT-Solutions.
In a phone interview, Marx said he first noticed the security problem Nov. 15 after connecting to the FTP server to download a security patch for Microsoft Office. Marx said numerous directories in a section of the site marked "outgoing" were accessible and contained files with "really interesting names."
Marx said he reported the problem to Microsoft, and the company appeared to take the FTP server offline Monday. When the server was restored later in the day, it had been "completely cleaned" of confidential files, Marx said.
But shortly thereafter, he said, Microsoft employees apparently began uploading new confidential files to the public section of the FTP server.
"It looked like Microsoft had a policy about what files could be uploaded, but that some employees weren't following it," said Marx.
After a short stint offline Tuesday morning, the FTP server's incoming directory appeared to be back online later in the day with proper access permissions. The outgoing directory, which contained patches and other support information, was still inaccessible, however.
The incident follows the posting last month of dozens of Microsoft internal documents, including e-mails and reports labeled "Microsoft Internal Distribution," on a website operated by a security researcher in Turkey.
In an e-mail interview, Tamer Sahin said he was able to access Microsoft's internal network at the beginning of this year using "known vulnerabilities" in Microsoft's software. In a message at his site, Sahin said he hacked Microsoft and posted documents he retrieved during his trespass because of his "fanaticism to Unix."
At the time, a Microsoft spokesman said the information Sahin obtained was outdated, but declined to comment further, citing the company's policy of not discussing intrusion claims.
